Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The First Formal Event

The grand hall glittered with chandeliers, soft music floating through the air. Guests in designer gowns and tailored suits mingled, champagne glasses clinking in polite laughter.

And there I was, Emilia, standing beside Alexander Sterling, the man I was legally married to but emotionally terrified of.

I smoothed my dress for the third time, my stomach twisting. This wasn't just a party—it was a test of the contract, a demonstration of how a "perfect wife" should behave.

Alexander approached, his posture rigid, eyes scanning the room with that usual icy precision. "Stay close," he murmured, his breath brushing my ear.

I nodded, trying not to shiver—not from fear, but from how close he was.

Throughout the evening, he introduced me to CEOs, investors, and distant relatives. His tone was professional, detached… almost cruel in its coldness. And yet, I noticed small things—the slight curl of his lips when I answered a question cleverly, the protective way he stayed by my side when a reporter tried to pry into his business dealings.

Halfway through, I caught a glimpse of his childhood friend in the crowd. My stomach sank. But instead of ignoring it, Alexander subtly stepped closer, positioning himself between us. A warning? Or was it something else? My heart raced, betraying my rational mind.

Later, during a slow dance required by some ceremonial protocol, his hand brushed mine. I froze. His touch was fleeting, professional—or was it?

He leaned closer, almost whispering, "You're doing well tonight, Emilia."

I swallowed hard, unsure if my pulse was from pride or… anticipation.

As the music swelled, I realized the truth: this night, meant to display a perfect marriage, had done something unexpected. It had ignited a spark between us that neither contract nor caution could contain.

And in the corner of the room, the glint of a diamond bracelet caught my eye. His hand resting near mine, steady and commanding… and I knew, without a doubt, that this marriage was no longer just about appearances.
