Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 : Shadows Converge

The cabin's silence swallowed them.

Elian's eyes closed, and the world went dark.

---

When he woke, morning sunlight streamed through the window.

He sat up slowly, disoriented.

Across the room, Marcus and Nyx stood close together, speaking in low voices over something.

Elian's gaze sharpened.

The book.

It was in Marcus's hands.

---

Nyx and Marcus turned at the same time.

"You're awake!" they both said.

---

Marcus smiled and walked over, handing the book back.

"Morning, kiddo. Sleep okay?"

---

Elian took it, his eyes narrowing.

"What's going on?"

---

Nyx didn't smile.

"We need to talk."

---

Marcus nodded.

"What happened last night… will happen again tonight," he said. "So you need to understand something. You're stronger than you think you are. Because your mom… is a vampire."

---

Elian froze.

"She's… alive?"

---

Marcus's expression turned somber.

"No, Elian. She's gone. But her power is in you. And The Order will come for it tonight."

---

Nyx stepped forward.

"We need to prepare you."

---

Elian shook his head slowly.

"So my mom… was a vampire?"

---

"Not just any vampire," Nyx said. "She was the leader of The Triumvirate."

---

Marcus added quietly, "And your dad was human. A love like that… it's rare."

---

Elian swallowed hard.

"What does that make me?"

---

Nyx met his eyes.

"A Dawnblood. Half-vampire, half-human. With powers neither side fully understands."

---

Marcus gestured to the book.

"This holds your family's secrets. And The Order wants it."

---

Elian gripped it tighter.

"What do I do now?"

---

Marcus's eyes clouded.

"Your father brought you to me," he said. "Told me to keep you safe. He and your mother… they died fighting The Order. Protecting you."

---

Elian's voice dropped.

"Protecting me from what?"

---

"The Order," Marcus said. "They hunt anyone with vampire blood. Your mother didn't want you to know. She made me promise to keep it from you."

---

Nyx stepped in.

"But things changed. Just before that party, I got a tip. You'd been exposed."

---

Marcus clenched his jaw.

"I didn't think it would happen this fast."

---

Nyx's voice softened, but her eyes held weight.

"Your mom… she was like family to me. Before she died, she made me promise her to protect you. No matter what. Even when others looked down on me for being a low-ranking Adept."

She paused.

"I was part of the Triumvirate. One of the three leaders of the Umbra. But after your mom died… everything changed. Vesper took control."

---

Elian frowned.

"Why me?"

---

Nyx's gaze locked onto his.

"Your blood. The Dawnblood legacy. Vesper wants it to unleash something called the Devourer. And I won't let that happen."

---

Elian's voice hardened.

"You were part of the Triumvirate. Why didn't you stop her?"

---

Nyx looked away for a moment.

"I tried," she said. "I fought her. But she was too strong. She had the Councils behind her. I had to disappear to survive."

A pause.

"But I never stopped watching over you."

---

Elian pulled out his phone.

"Mike?"

---

The call connected.

"Elian, man—I've been looking for you," Mike said. "I went to your place. You're not there. I found something… weird."

---

Elian tensed.

"What kind of weird?"

---

"Papers. Symbols. It looked like some cult stuff," Mike said. "You need to get back here."

---

Elian's eyes flicked to Nyx.

"Don't go back there," he said quickly. "Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th and Main. You know it?"

---

"Yeah… I know it," Mike said. "What's going on?"

---

"I'll explain when I see you. Just don't tell anyone you're meeting me."

---

The line went quiet for a moment.

"Elian… you're scaring me."

---

"I know," Elian said. "Just be careful."

---

He ended the call.

---

Nyx's voice was sharp.

"We need to move. Now. Vesper's men could already be tracking him."

---

Elian stood.

"Then let's go."

---

They moved fast.

Through backstreets.

Through shadows.

---

The night felt heavier now.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

The warehouse appeared ahead.

Dark.

Silent.

---

A figure stepped out.

"Elian?"

---

"Mike," Elian said, grabbing his arm. "Inside. Now."

---

They rushed in.

Nyx followed, scanning every corner.

"We don't have much time."

---

Mike pulled away.

"Okay, that's it. What's going on?"

---

Elian's expression hardened.

"This isn't something you want to be part of."

---

Nyx moved to the doors.

"They'll be here soon."

---

Elian looked at Mike.

"You need to leave."

---

But Mike saw the book.

His expression changed.

"That's it… the one from my dream."

---

Elian nodded.

"This is what they're after."

---

Nyx stepped forward urgently.

"Elian—"

---

The doors exploded open.

---

Figures rushed in.

Armed.

Fast.

Deadly.

---

Keal stepped forward.

"You've led us on quite the chase."

---

Elian's hands trembled as he opened the book.

Symbols glowed.

Light burst out.

Wind roared through the warehouse.

---

Mike stumbled back.

"What is happening—"

---

Nyx stared.

"Elian… your eyes…"

---

Something inside him broke loose.

---

The light intensified.

Keal stepped back.

"No… you're not supposed to—"

---

The explosion of power swallowed everything.

---

Then—

Silence.

---

Elian moved.

Fast.

Feral.

---

Keal didn't even react before Elian snapped his neck.

---

Nyx lunged at the others.

Tearing through them.

One by one.

---

It was over in seconds.

---

Mike backed away.

"What… are you?"

---

Elian stood still.

Eyes burning.

"I'm not human."

---

Nyx stepped beside him.

"We need to move. Now."

---

They returned to the cabin.

---

Mike sat down heavily.

"Dude… what just happened?"

---

Elian exhaled.

"It's a long story."

He held up the book.

"They want this. They're not human. They're vampires."

---

Mike blinked.

"Like Dracula?"

---

"Something like that."

---

Nyx stepped in.

"The Umbra is real. And we're in the middle of it."

---

Marcus spoke next.

"There's more. A prophecy."

---

Mike groaned.

"Of course there is."

---

Marcus continued.

"The book is tied to it. Elian is part of it."

---

Elian added quietly,

"And that means you're in danger too."

---

Nyx leaned forward.

"We need to decode the book. It's our only chance."

---

Marcus pulled out an old text.

"There's a ritual. A way to unlock it."

---

Nyx frowned.

"What kind of ritual?"

---

Marcus hesitated.

"A sacrifice."

---

Mike sat up straight.

"Hold on—what?"

---

Elian shook his head.

"Not necessarily death. It could mean giving something up."

---

Nyx read the text.

"'Sever the dawn's anchor… let go of the mortal tie.'"

---

Silence.

---

Then Elian spoke.

"I think I know what it means."

---

Mike blinked.

"What?"

---

Elian looked at him.

"You're my anchor."

---

Mike stood up immediately.

"No. Absolutely not."

---

"It's not like that—" Elian started.

---

"We're not sacrificing anyone," Mike snapped.

---

Marcus stepped in.

"Let's not rush this."

---

Nyx nodded.

"There could be another meaning."

---

She kept reading.

"There's something here… 'alternating shadows.'"

---

Marcus leaned in.

"Balance."

---

Elian nodded slowly.

"Light and dark."

---

Mike frowned.

"You mean… his power and theirs?"

---

Nyx's eyes lit up.

"Yes. If we balance it… we might bypass the sacrifice."

---

Hope flickered.

---

Elian looked at her.

"Can you figure it out?"

---

Nyx smiled slightly.

"I will."

---

The room fell into a tense silence.

But this time—

There was a plan.
