Chapter 2 - Awakening in a Primitive World Where Females Are Worshipped and Humans Are Mere Prey!

"Child, you must drink every drop of that broth. The spirits know you need the strength, especially one as frail as you."

Elder Shen's voice was gentle but carried that unmistakable edge of worry, the kind an old man gets when he's seen too many young ones slip away in the night. He sat on a flat stone across from her, his gnarled hands folded in his lap, watching her sip from the clay bowl with eyes that missed nothing. The fire had burned low during the night, leaving only glowing embers that painted the cave walls in soft orange.

Bai Qinglan lowered the bowl slowly, the warm liquid still coating her tongue with the taste of strange herbs and wild roots. Her body ached in ways her old life had never prepared her for—this thin frame felt like it could snap in a strong wind. She met the elder's gaze and forced a small, grateful smile, the kind that hid the storm raging inside her head.

"Thank you, Elder Shen. I… I don't remember much. Just the river. The cold. How did I end up here?"

The old man sighed, rubbing his wrinkled forehead as if the weight of the entire Beast Realm rested on his shoulders. He glanced toward the cave entrance where pale morning light filtered in through the hanging vines. Outside, the sounds of the village were already stirring—low growls turning into human laughter, the crack of stone tools shaping spears, and somewhere far off, the distant call of birds that sounded far too large to be ordinary.

"You were found half-drowned by the riverbank three days ago, little one," he said quietly, his voice dropping even lower. "No markings on your skin, no tribe scent. Just a human girl, alone. The patrols almost took you straight to the Wolf Clan outpost, but I convinced them you'd die before you reached there. Humans don't last long out here without protection. Especially females."

Bai Qinglan's fingers tightened around the bowl. Females. The word landed heavy in her chest. In her past life, she had been the one in charge—boardrooms, contracts, power. Here, that single word seemed to carry an entirely different meaning. She remembered the fragments from the original owner of this body: scattered memories of whispers around campfires, of beastmen shifting forms under the moonlight, of entire tribes going to war over one healthy female.

"Tell me more," she whispered, careful to keep her voice weak and uncertain, just like a frightened orphan should sound. "I feel like… like I woke up in a different world. What is this place? Why do I feel like everyone is watching me?"

Elder Shen leaned forward, poking the dying fire with a stick until sparks danced upward. His face grew serious, the lines around his eyes deepening. "This is the Beast Realm, child. Not like the stories your mother might have told you—if you even had one. Here, the strong rule and the weak… well, they survive only if they're smart or lucky. Beastmen walk among us. One moment a man, the next a wolf the size of a bear, or a python thick as a tree trunk, or an eagle that can blot out the sun. They shift when they hunt, when they fight, when they protect what's theirs."

He paused, letting the words sink in, then continued in that same low, careful tone. "But females? Ah, females are rarer than the finest beast crystals. The gods cursed our kind long ago—only one in every hundred births is a girl, and most don't survive the wilds. That makes every female a treasure. A goddess to be worshipped. Villages fight over them. Tribes go to war. A healthy female can bring prosperity, strong cubs, alliances that last generations. The beastmen will pamper you, feed you the best meat, build you the warmest cave… but cross them, or let the wrong tribe claim you, and you become prey."

Prey. The word sent a chill racing down her spine that had nothing to do with the morning cold seeping into the cave. Bai Qinglan stared into the broth, her modern mind spinning. In her old life, betrayal had come from people wearing suits and smiling at business dinners. Here, betrayal could come from claws and fangs and a single wrong scent on the wind. She could already feel it—that faint, strange pull in her chest again, like something deep inside this new body was reaching out toward the forest beyond the village. Toward someone powerful. Dangerous.

"And humans like me?" she asked, keeping her tone innocent even as her thoughts raced. "Are we… different?"

Elder Shen gave a dry chuckle that held no real humor. "Humans are the rarest of all. Most beastmen have never even seen one up close. You're smaller, softer, without the ability to shift. No claws, no venom, no wings. To them, you're either a fragile gift from the heavens… or easy meat if the tribe is starving and desperate. That's why I kept you hidden here. The Wolf Clan patrols sweep through every few days. Their Alpha, Helian Xuan—he's not a man you want noticing a human girl. His eyes are colder than the winter river, and his wolf form has ended more lives than the plague seasons combined."

Bai Qinglan's heart stuttered at the name. Helian Xuan. The fragments of memory whispered it like a warning and a promise at the same time. She pushed the feeling down, forcing herself to focus on the elder's words. This was her reality now. No more penthouse deals, no more backstabbing family. Just stone caves, shifting beasts, and a body that felt like it could break if she breathed too hard.

She finished the broth and handed the empty bowl back with a trembling hand. "I won't cause trouble. I just… I want to live. To be useful somehow. Is that possible here?"

Elder Shen studied her for a long moment, something softening in his weathered face. "Useful? Maybe. The village needs clever hands more than strong ones these days. But listen well, little one—hide your eyes. Hide your thoughts. In this world, a smart female is twice as dangerous as a strong male. And dangerous things get claimed… or destroyed."

He stood slowly, brushing dirt from his simple hide tunic. Outside, the village sounds grew louder—deep voices calling to one another, the thud of heavy paws on earth, the sharp scent of roasting meat drifting in on the breeze. "Rest today. Tomorrow we'll see about getting you some proper clothes and maybe a small task to earn your keep. But remember my words: females are worshipped here… until someone decides you're better as prey."

As the elder shuffled out of the cave, Bai Qinglan pulled the fur blanket tighter around her shoulders and stared at the rough stone wall. The mate bond—whatever it truly was—thrummed faintly again, stronger now, like a second heartbeat she couldn't silence. Somewhere beyond the village, golden wolf eyes were already turning this way, drawn by a scent that whispered of something rare, something fated.

She closed her eyes and whispered to herself, voice barely audible, "I survived betrayal once. I can survive this world too."

But deep down, she knew the real test was only beginning. The Beast Realm didn't forgive weakness… and it definitely didn't forgive secrets.

And hers were already starting to unravel.
