The city had gone quiet for only a moment. Smoke still curled from the ruined buildings, and distant sounds of collapsing structures reminded Adrian that the battle was never truly over.
He led his group cautiously down a cracked street, dagger ready in his hand. Mira walked slightly behind him, fire flickering faintly around her palms. Leo carried a broken plank with newfound determination, while Tobias stayed low, eyes scanning for anything that moved.
Adrian's mind was elsewhere. The last boss had been a warning. There would be more, bigger, faster.
The ground trembled again, subtly this time. Then came the sound of heavy footsteps echoing through the city.
From a nearby gate, three massive creatures dropped at once. Unlike the ones Adrian had faced before, these were larger, covered in segmented armor, and their movements were terrifyingly coordinated.
Adrian stopped and looked at his team. "This is your first real test. Follow my lead. Mistakes get you killed."
Mira swallowed. "We're ready. I think."
"You will be," Adrian said, not looking back.
The creatures charged immediately. Their roar was deafening, shaking loose debris from nearby buildings.
Adrian didn't hesitate. He leapt forward, dagger ready, closing the distance with the closest creature.
The creature swung its massive claw at him. He ducked just in time, letting the momentum carry him underneath. His dagger struck the exposed joint of its armor, leaving a shallow but noticeable wound.
The second creature circled toward his right. Adrian turned slightly, blocking its strike with the flat of his dagger, then pushed off to avoid a crushing overhead slam.
Mira launched a concentrated burst of flames at the third creature's legs, forcing it to stumble. Leo swung his plank at the creature in front, deflecting one of its attacks and giving Tobias a small window to jab at the exposed side.
Adrian observed carefully. The monsters moved with coordination, but there was a pattern. Each swing, each charge, had a slight rhythm—slight enough that if he predicted it, he could exploit it.
He adjusted his stance. "Mira, keep the flames low. Leo, flank the left side. Tobias, stay behind me and don't hesitate to strike. Move together, or we all die."
They obeyed. Imperfectly, but they obeyed.
Adrian waited for the first opening. One of the creatures raised its claw too high in an attack, exposing the weak gap in its side. Adrian dashed, leaping onto the side of its leg, striking quickly and retreating.
The creature roared, staggering slightly, but it recovered faster than Adrian expected. He rolled back and scanned the battlefield. Mira's flames hit one creature's leg again, forcing it off balance. Leo ducked under another's swing, striking its arm with his plank. Tobias jabbed repeatedly at the smallest gap he could find, each strike narrowly missing.
Adrian noted the gaps and timing. He waited, moving only when absolutely necessary, letting his group's movements distract the creatures.
Then the opportunity came. The three creatures converged, their timing slightly off. One of their armored joints was exposed. Adrian signaled with a quick hand motion. Mira flared her flames directly at the opening. Leo swung with all his strength. Tobias jabbed at the leg again.
Adrian leapt, striking cleanly at the exposed weak point. The creature staggered. Another strike followed. Sparks flew as the armor cracked.
It fell to the ground, fragments of its shell scattering.
The remaining two creatures roared in unison, enraged. Adrian's group moved instinctively, keeping them at bay while he studied the openings. He noticed the creatures were faster, more aggressive, but slightly predictable when pressured together.
Step by step, strike by strike, they wore the creatures down. Finally, after several precise strikes and coordinated attacks from Mira, Leo, and Tobias, the last creature collapsed. The black fragments dissolved into the air.
The group stood panting, battered but alive. Adrian wiped his dagger clean and surveyed the area. More gates pulsed in the distance. He could feel it—this was only the beginning of the real fight.
"Not bad," he said quietly. "But this is nothing compared to what's coming. We survive, we get stronger. That's all that matters."
Mira looked at him with awe. "You're… different."
Adrian didn't answer. He never did. Strategy and survival were the only truths he cared about.
Above, the system continued to watch. Adrian had proven his potential, but this battle only confirmed one thing: he would need to lead, not just fight. And the true waves—stronger, deadlier, and more cunning—were still ahead.
Adrian turned toward the horizon. "Move out. Keep your eyes open. Every gate is a threat. Every step matters."
The group followed silently, their trust in him growing with every battle survived.
Somewhere in the distance, the gates shimmered ominously. The next wave was coming, and Adrian knew the system was preparing for something even more dangerous.
