Chapter 94 - Episode 94 : Tears of the Siren

The Heart Beneath the Deep

The Lost Reaches of Thalorin had awakened.

For centuries, the city beneath the ocean had existed in silence—not because it had been destroyed, but because its people had forgotten how to sustain the civilization they had built.

The ancient Thalorians had forgotten the maintenance of their Technomagik Domes.

They had forgotten the operation of their gravitic engines.

They had forgotten the pathways of their Veil Gates.

And, in time, even some of their own people had forgotten who they were.

Now, the pulse of the ancient gravitic engine had begun restoring those memories.

Across the city, lights returned.

Dormant mechanisms stirred.

The guardians had regained their human forms.

And the questors had learned the truth.

Thalorin had never sunk beneath the ocean.

It had always been there.

The ocean was not the enemy.

It was their home.

But the questors had not traveled all the way from Skyreach simply to awaken a forgotten city.

They had come for something much more important.

The Tears of the Siren.

The ancient water capable of restoring corrupted soil and reviving dying vegetation.

And now, according to the Thalorian elder, the source lay beneath the heart of the city.

THE DESCENT

The ancient passage opened before them.

Sorion stood at its entrance.

Beyond it, a staircase descended into darkness.

Unlike the upper city, this section contained almost no Technomagik illumination.

Only faint blue lines ran along the walls.

Bardin adjusted the seals of his Frog Exo-Suit.

Bardin: "Every time we find something important, the safest-looking path disappears."

Lirion looked at the staircase.

Lirion: "That's because the ancient civilization apparently believed important places should be difficult to reach."

Dorion tightened his gauntlet.

Dorion: "Then it must be important."

Valek looked toward the elder.

Valek: "You said the Tears are below the city."

The Thalorian elder nodded.

Thalorian Elder: "Below the gravitic engine."

He pointed toward the darkness.

Thalorian Elder: "But the path has not been opened for generations."

Sorion looked at the passage.

Sorion: "Why?"

The elder hesitated.

Thalorian Elder: "Because the Tears were never considered a resource."

Bardin frowned.

Bardin: "Then what were they?"

The elder looked toward the darkness.

Thalorian Elder: "A living memory."

The questors fell silent.

The elder continued.

Thalorian Elder: "The Tears of the Siren do not simply heal life."

Thalorian Elder: "They remember what life was supposed to be."

Sorion immediately understood.

Memory.

Life.

Restoration.

The same forces that connected the Veil.

The same force he had sensed when he touched the ancient gate.

Sorion: "Then the corruption in Veridian Enclave isn't only destroying plants."

The elder looked at him.

Thalorian Elder: "No."

Sorion: "It's erasing what they were."

The elder nodded.

Thalorian Elder: "That is why the Tears may be the cure."

THE SIREN'S PASSAGE

The questors entered the passage.

The door closed behind them.

The sounds of the city disappeared.

They descended.

One level.

Then another.

Then another.

The walls gradually changed.

Stone became crystalline.

The crystal surfaces contained faint images.

Trees.

Rivers.

Animals.

People.

Entire landscapes.

Bardin stopped.

Bardin: "Those aren't decorations."

Lirion scanned one of the walls.

Lirion: "They're memory recordings."

Sorion approached.

The moment he touched the crystal, an image appeared.

A vast forest.

Green leaves.

Clear rivers.

A group of Thalorian children running through the trees.

Then the image changed.

The forest became corrupted.

Leaves turned black.

Water became dark.

The children disappeared.

The memory faded.

Sorion withdrew his hand.

Sorion: "They recorded the condition of the living world."

Lirion nodded.

Lirion: "The Tears must have been part of the same system."

The passage continued downward.

Soon they reached a circular chamber.

At its center was a dry basin.

Above it floated a small crystalline sphere.

Inside the sphere was a single drop of water.

It remained suspended in midair.

It never fell.

It never evaporated.

Bardin stared.

Bardin: "That's it?"

Lirion scanned it.

His expression changed.

Lirion: "No."

He looked at the readings.

Lirion: "That's only a sample."

The elder nodded.

Thalorian Elder: "The source is deeper."

THE MEMORY OF THE SIREN

The chamber suddenly filled with sound.

A woman's voice.

Not speaking.

Singing.

The melody was ancient.

Soft.

Almost mournful.

Bardin slowly removed his hand from his weapon.

His eyes widened.

Bardin: "That's the song."

Sorion looked at him.

Sorion: "The one you heard at the Veil Gate?"

Bardin nodded.

Bardin: "Yes."

The song continued.

The crystal sphere began glowing.

Sorion's vision returned.

He saw the city again.

But this time it was far older.

The Thalorians were gathered around an enormous underground chamber.

At the center was a colossal pool.

A woman stood beside it.

She wore ceremonial armor decorated with aquatic symbols.

Behind her was a gigantic statue of a siren.

The woman raised her hands.

Water rose from the pool.

The entire city responded.

The dome illuminated.

The gravitic engine activated.

The Veil Gate began glowing.

The vision showed the water traveling through the city's systems.

It entered the soil.

It flowed into gardens.

It passed through purification chambers.

It touched damaged plants.

And wherever it flowed—

life returned.

Sorion finally understood.

The Tears were not simply healing water.

They were the biological memory system of Thalorin.

The water carried the resonance of healthy life.

It remembered forests.

It remembered roots.

It remembered fertile soil.

It remembered what living things were before corruption changed them.

Then the vision changed.

The Thalorians were struggling.

Omnission had already begun affecting their memories.

Engineers forgot procedures.

Guardians forgot their identities.

Scientists forgot discoveries.

And eventually, the civilization could no longer maintain the system.

The Tears continued flowing.

But nobody remembered how to properly distribute them.

The city slowly began failing.

Sorion opened his eyes.

THE HEART OF THALORIN

The final door opened.

A massive chamber appeared beyond it.

The questors stopped.

No one spoke.

Before them was an underground cavern larger than the city above.

An enormous body of water filled the center.

But it was not an ordinary underground lake.

The water glowed softly.

Blue.

Silver.

Green.

Every movement created ripples of memory.

Around the lake stood massive ancient structures.

Pipes.

Channels.

Crystalline reservoirs.

Technomagik conduits.

The entire system converged at one location.

At the center of the lake stood a colossal statue.

A siren.

Her hands were extended toward the water.

From her eyes flowed two continuous streams.

They entered the lake.

The Tears of the Siren.

Bardin whispered:

Bardin: "Beautiful."

Lirion scanned the lake.

His instruments immediately overloaded.

Lirion: "I've never seen energy readings like this."

Dorion looked toward him.

Dorion: "Can we collect it?"

The Thalorian elder immediately shook his head.

Thalorian Elder: "Not directly."

Lirion frowned.

Lirion: "Why?"

Thalorian Elder: "Because the Tears respond to living memory."

Sorion stepped toward the water.

The lake reacted.

A silver-violet wave spread across its surface.

The entire cavern illuminated.

The Siren's statue opened its eyes.

Bardin stepped backward.

Bardin: "I think it recognizes him."

Sorion approached the water.

He could feel thousands of memories inside it.

Not individual memories.

Memories of life itself.

Rain.

Roots.

Seeds.

Forests.

Rivers.

Animals.

People.

Birth.

Growth.

Renewal.

The water remembered all of it.

THE GUARDIANS OF THE SIREN

Suddenly, the lake moved.

Something emerged.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Ancient guardians rose from the water.

But these were different from the guardians they had encountered above.

They were larger.

More heavily armored.

Their bodies were covered in ancient coral-like structures.

They surrounded the chamber.

Dorion stepped forward.

Dorion: "Defensive guardians."

Lirion scanned them.

Lirion: "They're protecting the source."

The guardians attacked.

Dorion blocked the first strike.

CLANG!

Valek moved beside him.

Bardin activated his Frog Exo-Suit and propelled himself across the chamber.

Lirion deployed a Technomagik construct.

The chamber erupted into movement.

But Sorion did not attack.

He listened.

The guardians were not angry.

They were afraid.

Their memories were fractured.

They were still trapped between their original identities and the monstrous forms Omnission had forced upon them.

Sorion closed his eyes.

Sorion: "They're still remembering."

Bardin heard him.

He stopped.

Then he began playing his lute.

A simple melody.

Not a battle song.

A song about home.

The music echoed through the chamber.

The guardians hesitated.

Sorion released his resonance.

Silver-violet energy traveled through Bardin's melody.

The gravitic engine above responded.

A pulse descended through the chamber.

BOOOOM.

The guardians stopped.

One by one, their forms changed.

The aquatic armor dissolved.

The monstrous bodies became human.

Thalorians fell to the ground.

Some were soldiers.

Others were guardians.

One was an elderly woman.

Another was a young man.

A third looked toward the Siren statue and began crying.

Thalorian Guardian: "We forgot."

Sorion approached.

Sorion: "You remembered."

The guardian looked at him.

Thalorian Guardian: "No."

He pointed toward the lake.

Thalorian Guardian: "The water remembered for us."

THE PRICE OF THE TEARS

The elder approached the lake.

He placed his hand over the surface.

The water responded.

Thalorian Elder: "The Tears cannot be taken like ordinary water."

Lirion frowned.

Lirion: "Then how do we bring them to Veridian?"

The elder looked at him.

Thalorian Elder: "You must ask."

Bardin blinked.

Bardin: "Ask the water?"

Thalorian Elder: "Ask the memory."

Sorion understood.

He approached the lake.

The others watched.

He knelt.

His hand touched the surface.

The cavern disappeared.

Sorion stood in a vast forest.

Everything was green.

Healthy.

Alive.

A tree stood before him.

Its branches stretched toward the sky.

Sorion placed his hand against its trunk.

He felt its memory.

Seed.

Root.

Growth.

Storm.

Winter.

Spring.

Life.

Then the tree began turning black.

Corruption spread across its bark.

Sorion tried to stop it.

But the corruption continued.

A voice spoke.

Voice: "You cannot restore what you do not remember."

Sorion looked around.

Sorion: "Then teach me."

The forest responded.

Thousands of memories entered him.

The memories of healthy soil.

The memory of roots connecting underground.

The memory of rain.

The memory of seeds waiting beneath earth.

The memory of forests returning after fire.

Then the vision ended.

Sorion returned to the lake.

A small crystal vial floated before him.

Inside it was a single glowing drop.

The Tears had given their answer.

THE CURE

Lirion carefully took the vial.

The moment he touched it, his instruments activated.

A new reading appeared.

Lirion: "This is concentrated resonance."

Dorion looked at him.

Dorion: "Enough to save Veridian?"

Lirion shook his head.

Lirion: "Not by itself."

Everyone became silent.

Lirion: "But it's enough to create a restoration source."

The Thalorian elder nodded.

Thalorian Elder: "That is how it was always used."

The Tears were not meant to flood an entire region.

They were meant to restore the memory of life, allowing the natural regeneration of plants and soil to continue.

Lirion looked toward the reserve Veil Battery Crystals.

Lirion: "If we combine the Tears with the reserve crystals..."

He stopped.

His eyes widened.

Lirion: "We could create a Technomagik restoration network."

Sorion understood.

They could transport the resonance through the Veil.

Instead of carrying enormous quantities of water across the world, they could use the Tears as the source of the restorative memory.

The Veil network could distribute it.

The corruption in Veridian Enclave could potentially be reversed.

But there was another problem.

The other cities.

The Thalorian elder looked toward the distant darkness.

Thalorian Elder: "If you restore Veridian, perhaps you can help us restore the others."

Lirion looked at the ancient city.

Lirion: "The inactive Domes."

Thalorian Elder: "Yes."

The questors realized their mission had expanded again.

They had come looking for a cure.

They had found a civilization.

They had found a technology capable of restoring Veil Gates.

And now they had found the means to awaken an entire forgotten region.

THE SIGNAL FROM VERIDIAN

Suddenly, the reserve crystals began glowing.

Lirion turned toward them.

Lirion: "That's strange."

A pulse traveled through the crystal.

Then another.

A distant signal appeared on the Skiff's communication system.

The Observatory.

Skyreach was calling.

Lirion opened the channel.

A distorted transmission filled the chamber.

Observatory: "Questors... respond..."

Lirion answered.

Lirion: "Skyreach, we hear you."

Static.

Then the voice returned.

Observatory: "The condition of Veridian Enclave has changed."

Sorion's expression hardened.

Sorion: "How?"

The Observatory responded.

Observatory: "The corruption has accelerated."

Silence.

Observatory: "The forests are dying faster."

Bardin lowered his head.

The elder looked at the Tears.

Lirion closed his hand around the vial.

The questors had found the cure.

But they had found it at the moment Veridian needed it most.

The Observatory continued.

Observatory: "You must return immediately."

Sorion stood.

Sorion: "We're coming."

He looked at the Thalorian elder.

Sorion: "But we're not leaving you behind."

The elder smiled.

Thalorian Elder: "Then perhaps the Lost Reaches have finally found their path home."

The questors returned toward the upper city.

Behind them, the Tears of the Siren continued to flow.

The ancient gravitic engine continued turning.

Across the Lost Reaches, dormant lights began appearing.

One city.

Then another.

Then another.

Far beyond the restored dome, countless ancient Technomagik cities remained asleep beneath the Endless Ocean.

But now they had hope.

Because the memory had returned.

And the Thalorians finally remembered who they were.

Citizens of the Deep.

The questors boarded their flying Skiff.

Bardin removed the Frog Exo-Suit helmet and looked back at the city.

Bardin: "We came here searching for water."

Lirion secured the Tears.

Lirion: "And found a civilization."

Dorion looked toward the surface.

Dorion: "Then let's save another."

Valek smiled.

Sorion stood at the bow.

Above them was the Endless Ocean.

Beyond it lay the vast lands of Orinthal.

And far to the northwest—

the dying forests of Veridian Enclave waited.

The flying Skiff rose through the ancient Veil passage.

The ocean opened around them.

The gigantic lighthouse illuminated their ascent.

And for the first time in centuries, the beacon of Thalorin shone brightly across the Endless Ocean.

The Tears of the Siren had been found.

The cure was in their hands.

But the corruption in Veridian Enclave was spreading faster than ever.

The questors had no time to lose.
