The room stayed quiet after Kai's words.
"I don't want anyone else near you."
It hung in the air longer than it should.
Adrian didn't move immediately. He just stood there, looking at Kai like he was trying to piece something together.
Kai felt it too.
That moment where things could either be ignored… or change completely.
So he stepped back first.
"I didn't mean it like that," Kai said, calmer now. "Forget it."
Adrian's eyes stayed on him. "Then how did you mean it?"
Kai looked away, running a hand through his hair. "You're overthinking it."
"I don't think I am."
Kai let out a quiet breath. "I just… don't like change."
That wasn't the full truth.
But it wasn't a lie either.
Adrian studied him for a few seconds before speaking again. "Elena is not staying here permanently."
"I didn't say she was."
"But you're acting like she is."
Kai didn't respond.
Because he knew Adrian was right.
And that made it worse.
"I've known her for years," Adrian continued. "This isn't new."
Kai nodded slightly. "I know."
"So what's different now?"
Kai hesitated.
Everything.
But he couldn't say that.
"…Nothing," he said instead.
Adrian didn't look convinced.
But he didn't push further.
"Get some rest," Adrian said after a moment. "You look tired."
Kai almost smiled. "I'm fine."
"You're not."
Kai looked at him again. "You've been saying that a lot."
"Because it's true."
Another pause.
This time, it wasn't tense.
Just quiet.
Familiar.
---
Adrian finally turned slightly, like he was about to leave.
But Kai spoke again.
"…You used to come check on me like this all the time."
Adrian stopped.
Then looked back at him.
"When you were younger," Adrian said.
Kai nodded. "Yeah."
There was something different in his voice now.
Softer.
Less guarded.
"You'd knock, come in, make sure I ate… make sure I wasn't sick," Kai added.
Adrian didn't deny it. "You needed someone to do that."
Kai let out a small breath. "Maybe I still do."
That made Adrian pause.
Really pause this time.
He turned fully toward Kai again.
"You're not ten anymore," Adrian said, but his voice wasn't cold.
Kai gave a faint smile. "I know."
"Then don't act like it."
"I'm not."
Adrian walked closer.
Not in a confrontational way.
Just… closer.
"You're confusing things," Adrian said.
Kai looked up at him. "Am I?"
"Yes."
Kai held his gaze. "Then help me understand."
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
And that silence said enough.
---
Kai looked away first this time.
"…Forget it," he said quietly. "It's late."
He turned slightly, like he was about to move past him.
But before he could—
Adrian reached out.
Grabbed his wrist.
Not tight.
Just enough to stop him.
Kai froze.
It had been a long time since Adrian touched him like this.
Not adjusting his collar.
Not something small.
Something that actually held him in place.
"Wait," Adrian said.
Kai didn't pull away.
He didn't move at all.
"What?" Kai asked quietly.
Adrian hesitated.
That alone was strange.
Adrian never hesitated.
But right now, he did.
"I didn't realize…" Adrian started, then stopped.
Kai turned slightly, still held in place. "Didn't realize what?"
Adrian looked at him, his expression more serious now. "That you felt this strongly."
Kai let out a quiet breath. "I didn't either."
That was the truth.
---
Adrian slowly let go of his wrist.
But neither of them stepped back.
They were still close.
Too close.
"You should've said something earlier," Adrian said.
Kai gave a small, tired smile. "Would it have changed anything?"
Adrian didn't answer.
And that was the answer.
Kai nodded slightly. "Exactly."
---
The silence returned again.
But this time…
It wasn't heavy.
It felt… familiar.
Like something from years ago.
---
Kai glanced at him again.
"…Do you remember," he said slowly, "when I first got here?"
Adrian's expression softened just a little. "Of course."
"You barely talked," Kai said. "You just gave orders."
Adrian almost smiled. "I still do."
"Yeah," Kai said quietly. "But back then… I didn't understand you."
"And now?"
Kai hesitated.
"…Now I think I understand you too much."
That made Adrian look at him again.
Properly.
---
Kai looked away, shaking his head slightly. "There was this one time… I got sick."
Adrian frowned slightly. "You were sick a lot."
"I mean really sick," Kai said. "Fever. Couldn't get out of bed."
Adrian remembered.
"I stayed with you," Adrian said.
Kai nodded. "You didn't leave for two days."
"You needed someone there."
Kai laughed softly. "You keep saying that."
"Because it's true."
Kai looked back at him. "Maybe. But I remember something else."
"What?"
Kai's voice got quieter.
"You hugged me."
Adrian didn't say anything.
But he didn't deny it either.
"I was scared," Kai continued. "I thought I was going to die or something stupid like that."
"You were ten."
"Still," Kai said. "You told me it was fine… and then you just… held me."
The room went quiet again.
But this time, it wasn't uncomfortable.
It felt like they were both standing in the same memory.
---
"I don't do that anymore," Adrian said after a moment.
"I know."
"You don't need it."
Kai smiled faintly. "You're really sure about that?"
Adrian didn't respond immediately.
And that hesitation—
Kai noticed it.
---
Before Adrian could say anything else—
Kai stepped closer.
It wasn't sudden.
It wasn't aggressive.
Just… slow.
Careful.
Like he was testing something.
Adrian didn't move.
Didn't step back.
Didn't stop him.
And that was enough.
---
Kai stopped right in front of him.
Close enough to feel his presence.
Close enough to hear his breathing.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
---
Then Kai said quietly,
"…Just this once."
Adrian frowned slightly. "Kai—"
But before he could finish—
Kai leaned forward.
And wrapped his arms around him.
---
It wasn't forceful.
It wasn't desperate.
Just… a hug.
Simple.
But not simple at all.
---
Adrian froze.
For a second.
Maybe two.
Like he didn't expect it.
Like he didn't know how to react.
---
Kai almost pulled away.
But then—
Adrian moved.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And then…
He hugged him back.
---
It was different now.
Not like before.
Not like when Kai was ten.
This wasn't about comfort.
Or protection.
Or taking care of a child.
---
This was something else.
Something neither of them fully understood.
---
Kai's grip tightened slightly.
Not enough to be obvious.
But enough to show—
He didn't want to let go.
---
Adrian noticed.
Of course he did.
His hand rested against Kai's back.
Steady.
Firm.
But not pushing him away.
---
Neither of them spoke.
Because there was nothing they could say.
---
The moment lasted longer than it should.
Longer than what was normal.
---
And that's when Adrian slowly pulled back.
Not abruptly.
Just enough to create space.
---
Kai let him.
But not immediately.
There was a slight delay.
A second too long.
---
When they finally separated—
Everything felt different.
---
Adrian looked at him.
Really looked at him.
Like he was seeing him clearly for the first time.
---
"You're not a kid anymore," Adrian said again.
But this time—
It didn't sound the same.
---
Kai gave a small smile.
"I've been trying to tell you that."
---
Adrian exhaled quietly.
Then ran a hand through his hair.
Something he only did when he was thinking too much.
---
"This…" Adrian started, then stopped.
Kai waited.
"…This can't be confusing for you," Adrian finished.
Kai tilted his head slightly. "It already is."
"That's exactly the problem."
Kai didn't argue.
Because for once—
Adrian was right.
---
But that didn't change anything.
---
Kai stepped back fully this time.
Putting space between them.
"I'll go to sleep," he said.
Adrian nodded slightly. "Yeah."
Kai walked toward the door.
But before he opened it—
He paused.
---
"…It felt the same," Kai said quietly.
Adrian looked at him. "What did?"
Kai didn't turn around.
"The hug."
A small pause.
"…but also different."
---
He didn't wait for a reply.
He just left.
---
Adrian stayed where he was.
Alone in the room.
Thinking.
---
For the first time in a long time—
He didn't have control over the situation.
---
And that bothered him.
More than he expected.
---
Because now…
He couldn't pretend he didn't see it.
---
Couldn't ignore the way Kai looked at him.
Or the way he held on just a little too long.
---
Or the way it felt…
when he hugged him back.
---
Adrian exhaled slowly.
"…This is a problem."
---
But even as he said it—
He didn't move.
Didn't walk away.
---
Because part of him—
Was still thinking about it too.
