The Science Building was a tomb of glass and steel. Boots echoed against polished floors in a frantic, uneven rhythm. Outside, the heavy, bone-shaking thrum of a high-lift dropship rattled the windows, its searchlights sweeping the hallways like hungry eyes.
My lungs were burning. Every step felt like I was wading through thick, digital sludge. Behind me, the quad was crawling with men in suits, but here—in the belly of the building—the 'Aura' started to flicker back into life, fueled by sheer adrenaline.
"Room 402, Leo," Seraphina's voice whispered. She sounded strained, her digital tone shimmering with a strange, nervous energy. "Hurry. My internal firewall is at twelve percent. If those intruders hit me with a remote kill-signal, your brain is going to feel like it's being microwaved."
I reached the heavy oak door of Elara's private lab and hammered on the wood. "Professor! Open up!"
The lock turned with a sharp click. Elara stood there, her hair down and messy, wearing a silk robe over her clothes. The second she saw the blue glow flickering in my eyes and the frantic look on my face, she pulled me inside and slammed the door.
"They found you," she breathed. Her voice was a sharp, jagged edge in the quiet room. "The Aegis Group... I didn't think they'd move this fast."
"Who are they, Elara?" I gasped, leaning against a cold metal exam table. "They called me 'property.' They said the code belongs to them."
"They're the ones who funded the original Muse project," she said, her hands flying over a touch-screen console. "They weren't looking for a dating app, Leo. They were looking for a way to override human willpower. A way to 'code' charisma. And you... you're the only successful integration. You're the miracle they want to cage."
[QUEST TRIGGERED: THE ANCHOR POINT]
Task: Maintain a steady heart rate during calibration.
Reward: Neural Shielding Level 1.
Penalty: Feedback Loop / Unconsciousness.
"Get on the table," she commanded. "I need to perform a full-body biometric scan. If I can't find the 'Anchor' point where the code is fused to your nervous system, I can't mask your signal."
I didn't argue. I pulled off my torn hoodie and climbed onto the cold surface. Elara stepped closer, her breath warm against my chest as she began to attach electrode sensors to my skin.
"Steady heart rate?" I hissed internally. "Seraphina, she's touching me! My pulse is redlining!"
"Then use the 'Cold Breath' technique, darling," Seraphina giggled, though her voice sounded brittle. "Look at her 'Liking Meter'—it's swirling."
Elara's fingers were cool against my skin, but everywhere she touched, a spark of blue static jumped between us. She leaned over me, her hair brushing against my neck, her eyes fixed on the monitors.
"Your bio-signs are... incredible," she whispered, her fingers lingering on my collarbone. "The code isn't just sitting in your brain. It's rewriting your muscle fibers. It's making you... perfect."
She looked down at me, her face inches from mine. The 'Liking Meter' above her head was a swirling, dangerous violet, pulsing at 55%. The professional mask was gone.
"Leo," she breathed, her hand sliding up to cup my jaw. "If they take you... I'll never see you again. I can't let that happen."
BEEP-BEEP-BEEP!
"Detection spike!" Seraphina screamed. "They've tracked the scan! They're in the building!"
Elara didn't panic. She grabbed a syringe from a nearby tray and looked me dead in the eyes. "This is going to hurt, Leo. I have to inject a 'Ghost Protocol' into your spinal fluid. It'll hide your signal, but it's going to overload your stats. You're going to be... irresistible. Your Aura will be lethal."
"Do it," I growled, gritting my teeth.
She plunged the needle into the base of my neck.
[SYSTEM UPGRADE: GHOST PROTOCOL ACTIVE]
[AURA LEVEL: OVERFLOW]
[NEW SKILL: IRRESISTIBLE PULSE]
I sat up, my eyes glowing a blinding, neon blue. The air around me seemed to vibrate, blurring the edges of the room. Elara stumbled back, her hand over her mouth, her face turning a deep, dark red.
"Leo..." she gasped, her legs shaking. "You... you shouldn't look at me like that. The pulse... it's too much."
"I can't help it," I said, my voice now a deep, resonant vibration that made the glass beakers on the shelves rattle. "The system is wide open, Elara. And right now... all I see is you."
I stood up, the 'Aura' radiating from me in waves. Outside, I could hear the heavy boots of the Aegis guards pounding up the stairs.
"Hide," I told her, my voice full of a power I'd never felt before. "I'm going to show them what happens when you try to 'own' a King."
BOOM!
The reinforced doors of the laboratory groaned as the first breach-charge detonated. Five Aegis guards stormed through the smoke. They raised their rifles, but as their eyes locked onto me, I saw the hesitation. Their heart-rate monitors began to spike.
"Target... target is... beautiful," one of the guards stammered, his rifle dipping.
"Too late," Seraphina's voice whispered in my ear. "Step left, Leo. Now... dance."
I didn't run. I 'Glitched.' One second I was ten feet away, the next I was standing directly in front of the lead guard. My movement left a blue afterimage in the air. I reached out and tapped the side of his helmet.
CRACK!
The carbon-fiber visor shattered. He went down before he even realized I'd moved. I spun, my leg sweeping the floor in a 'Kinetic Strike' that sent two more guards flying into the chemical racks.
[QUEST COMPLETE: THE UNTOUCHABLE KING]
[REWARD: PERFECT REFLEXES LEVEL 3]
The commander lunged at me with a combat knife. I caught his wrist, the 'Irresistible Pulse' traveling from my palm into his nervous system. He gasped, his eyes widening as a wave of artificial euphoria crashed through his brain. He dropped the knife, staring up at me in a daze.
"You... you're not a student," he whispered.
"I'm the upgrade," I said, delivering a final strike to his temple.
The lab was a wreck. Elara stepped out from behind her shield, her face pale.
"Leo..." she breathed, her hand trembling as she reached for me. "The Ghost Protocol... it's not just hiding you. It's changing you. If we don't find a way to stabilize the code soon... there won't be anything left of 'Leo' to save."
I didn't answer. I just gripped her hand. The 'Rizz System' was a power I'd always wanted, but as we plunged into the dark tunnels toward the old gym, I started to wonder... am I the one using the System? Or is the System finally done with me?
