Chapter 4 - The rogue witch

The forest was quiet, too quiet. Lyra's senses tingled as she walked beside Kael, her eyes darting from shadow to shadow. The training from the previous day had left her sore, but her mind was sharper, her instincts keener. She could feel the magic in the trees, the whisper of the wind, and the pulse of the land beneath her feet.

Kael moved silently beside her, every muscle coiled and ready, his amber eyes scanning the darkness beyond the Moonstone Circle. "Selene is near," he murmured, his voice a low growl. "Her presence… it is heavy, corrupted, like a stain on the forest. She has been waiting for this moment."

Lyra swallowed hard. Fear gnawed at her, but she refused to let it paralyze her. She had come too far to turn back now. "How do we stop her?" she asked, gripping the small dagger Kael had given her for defense.

Kael's gaze softened briefly as he looked at her. "You don't stop her. Not yet. You survive, you learn, and you grow stronger. That is your first lesson. The moment you face her head-on, she will test every weakness you have. And she will exploit it."

The shadows shifted suddenly, and the temperature dropped. Lyra felt a chill crawl down her spine. Then came a voice, smooth and cold as ice.

"Well, well… Kael Draven," it purred. "And little Lyra. How delightful to see you so… exposed."

Lyra's blood ran cold. She turned toward the voice and froze. Emerging from the shadows was a woman, tall and elegant, her long black hair flowing like liquid midnight. Her eyes glowed with a malevolent violet light, and the air around her shimmered with raw, chaotic magic.

"Selene…" Kael growled, his body tensing as the wolf within him surged.

Selene smiled, a slow, cruel curve of her lips. "I've been watching. Waiting. The prophecy speaks of a human girl who will change the fate of the Shadowlands… and here you are, exactly as foretold. How touching."

Lyra's hands trembled, but she forced herself to stand firm. "I'm not afraid of you," she said, though her voice wavered slightly.

Selene's smile widened. "Oh, you should be." She raised her hand, and the forest seemed to twist and shudder. Branches bent unnaturally, roots rose from the ground like grasping hands, and the shadows lengthened, wrapping around her like tendrils of darkness.

Kael stepped in front of Lyra, his stance protective. "Stay behind me," he commanded. "Do not engage her yet. Watch, learn, survive."

Lyra's heart pounded. She wanted to obey, to stay behind him—but something inside her flared. The energy from the previous day's training pulsed through her, warming her hands, calling to her.

Selene's laughter cut through the tension, sharp and mocking. "Ah, so the little human does have potential. Let's see just how much she can handle."

With a flick of her wrist, a wave of dark energy surged toward them. Kael transformed instantly, limbs elongating, fur sprouting, teeth bared. In one fluid motion, he intercepted the attack, the force of it shaking the ground.

Lyra stumbled back, heart racing, but instinctively, she reached out. The magic inside her flared, responding to her fear and her determination. A barrier of silver light erupted around her, absorbing some of Selene's attack. The energy crackled, hot against her skin, but she held firm.

Kael's amber eyes widened, impressed. "Good… you've learned faster than I expected," he growled, his voice low and dangerous.

Selene hissed, a sound like venom. "So, the little human thinks she can fight me? How amusing." She raised both hands, and the shadows twisted into monstrous forms, their eyes glowing violet, their claws reaching toward Lyra.

Lyra's first instinct was to run, but she couldn't—something primal told her she had to stand. She focused, feeling the pulse of the forest, the connection to Kael, and the strange bond she couldn't explain. With a deep breath, she extended her hands, and silver energy erupted, pushing the shadow creatures back.

Kael moved beside her, his wolf form sleek and powerful. "Keep it up! Focus, Lyra! Channel your intent, not your fear!"

Lyra did as he said, and the shadows shrieked, recoiling from her light. Selene's face twisted in rage. "You insolent child!" she screeched, summoning a vortex of darkness that threatened to swallow them whole.

Kael lunged forward, attacking Selene with a speed and ferocity that left Lyra breathless. Their battle was a blur—clashing energy, sparks of silver and violet, the roar of the wolf, the hiss of magic. Lyra tried to keep up, her silver light flaring and faltering, but every time she looked at Kael, she felt a surge of courage.

"You're stronger than I thought," Kael said, dodging a blast of dark energy and countering with a swipe of his clawed hand. "But don't exhaust yourself!"

Lyra nodded, focusing all her energy. She visualized Selene's power as a weight pressing down, and then, with a sudden burst, she released a wave of silver light that collided with Selene's vortex. The force sent Selene stumbling back, her eyes wide with shock.

"You… this is impossible!" Selene hissed, her form flickering. The shadows around her faltered, unsure of their command.

Kael seized the opportunity. "Now, Lyra! Push it forward!"

Lyra's hands glowed brighter, and the silver energy surged, sweeping through the forest like a tidal wave. The shadows disintegrated, the trees shuddered, and Selene shrieked, retreating into the darkness.

She glared at them, her voice a promise and a curse. "This isn't over, little human… or you, Alpha. I will return, and when I do, you will regret ever crossing me."

With a swirl of dark mist, Selene vanished, leaving the forest eerily silent. The wind stilled, and the moonlight returned to the clearing, illuminating the exhaustion on Lyra's face and the tense, protective stance of Kael.

Lyra sank to her knees, trembling, her hands still glowing faintly from the battle. "I… I did it?" she whispered.

Kael transformed back to his human form, kneeling beside her. He placed a hand on her shoulder, steadying her. "Yes… you survived. You did more than survive. You fought. And you have potential, Lyra. But this… this was only a taste of what's coming. Selene will not be this lenient again."

Lyra looked up at him, her chest heaving. "I… I couldn't have done it without you."

Kael's gaze softened, but there was still a flicker of intensity in his amber eyes. "You could have. I only guided you. Never forget that. The power was always inside you."

For a moment, the forest was still, as if holding its breath. Lyra felt something between them—a silent acknowledgment of trust, of partnership, and something more. A spark that had been growing since the Moonstone Circle, since the first day she had met him, now ignited into something undeniable.

Kael's voice broke the silence. "Come. We must return to the Circle. You need rest, and I need to ensure no further traces of Selene's magic remain. Tomorrow… we train again. You have begun to awaken the power within you, but there is still much to learn."

Lyra nodded, feeling the ache of her muscles and the weight of her newfound responsibilities. She had faced a true threat, survived, and tapped into a power she didn't know she possessed. And beside her stood Kael, alpha, protector, and something more—a presence she could no longer ignore.

As they walked back through the forest, the shadows seemed less menacing, the moonlight softer. Yet deep within the darkness, Lyra knew Selene was waiting, watching, plotting her return.

And Lyra's heart, though battered and trembling, beat with a fierce determination. She would not be a pawn in the prophecy. She would fight, she would survive, and she would protect the Shadowlands… and Kael, no matter the cost.

The hunt had begun, and the Shadowlands would never be the same again.
