Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The One Who Opened It First

The darkness froze.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to hesitate.

Mira stood there, breathing hard, her glowing mark cutting through the shadows like light through smoke.

Aarav's body trembled in front of her.

Half-human.

Half-something else.

"…Help me…"

His voice.

Weak.

Breaking.

Mira stepped forward.

"I will."

But the moment she did—

The darkness reacted.

Violently.

"STOP."

The voice thundered from Aarav's body—

But it wasn't his.

Mira didn't stop.

Instead—

She raised her hand.

The mark on her wrist burned brighter.

And then—

It changed.

The symbol twisted.

Shifted.

Becoming something older.

Something deeper.

Something that felt…

Familiar.

Aarav's eyes widened.

"…That mark…"

The same.

Not identical.

But connected.

Like two parts of the same thing.

"…What are you…?" he whispered.

Mira didn't answer.

Not immediately.

Instead—

She looked at him.

Not with fear.

Not with hesitation.

But with something else.

Guilt.

"…I didn't want you to remember like this."

The world went silent.

"…Remember what?" Aarav asked.

Mira closed her eyes.

For a moment—

She looked… tired.

Then—

She opened them.

And everything changed.

🌑

Her form flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

It broke.

Not like something tearing apart.

Like something revealing itself.

Her eyes—

No longer human.

Deep.

Dark.

Endless.

Just like Aarav's.

But calmer.

Controlled.

Ancient.

Aarav stepped back.

"…No…"

Her voice echoed now.

Not loud.

But layered.

Like it carried something beyond her.

"…I told you I died here."

The ground trembled.

"…That was true."

A pause.

"…But not the whole truth."

Aarav's heart pounded.

"…Then what is?"

Silence.

Then—

She said it.

"I didn't just die here."

The darkness around them pulled back.

As if afraid.

"I opened the door."

Everything stopped.

Aarav's mind went blank.

"…What?"

"I was the first."

The words echoed.

Heavy.

Impossible.

"…No…"

"Yes."

Mira stepped closer.

The shadows moved away from her.

Like she didn't belong to them.

Or worse—

Like they belonged to her.

"This place… this door…"

She looked around slowly.

"…It didn't exist before me."

Aarav's breathing stopped.

"…You're lying…"

"I wish I was."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"For years… I was trapped inside."

A flash—

A memory forced itself into Aarav's mind.

A girl.

Alone.

In darkness.

Screaming.

Crying.

Breaking.

"They didn't just consume me."

Her voice dropped.

"They changed me."

The darkness pulsed.

"And when I came back…"

A pause.

"I wasn't just human anymore."

Aarav stared at her.

"…You're like me…"

Mira shook her head slowly.

"…No."

A step closer.

"I'm what comes before you."

Silence.

"…I'm the reason you were brought here."

The words hit harder than anything before.

Aarav's voice trembled.

"…What do you mean…?"

Mira looked directly into his eyes.

"…Your father didn't find this place by accident."

Aarav's heart dropped.

"…No…"

"I led him here."

Everything shattered.

"…Why…?"

Mira's expression broke.

"…Because I needed someone strong enough to survive it."

The darkness shifted violently.

"…And he wasn't."

Aarav's fists clenched.

"…So you used him?"

Silence.

"…Yes."

The word echoed.

Cold.

Final.

Aarav stepped back.

"…You destroyed my life…"

Mira didn't deny it.

"…Yes."

Tears filled her eyes.

"But I didn't expect you."

A pause.

"…You weren't supposed to survive."

Aarav's voice cracked.

"…Then why am I still here?"

Mira looked at him.

Something changed in her expression.

"…Because you're different."

The air tightened.

"…You didn't just survive the door…"

The mark on Aarav's hand pulsed.

"…you're merging with it."

Silence.

"…And if that completes…"

Her voice dropped.

"…you won't just escape."

Aarav's breath stopped.

"…Then what will I become?"

Mira whispered—

"…Something even I can't control."

The darkness surged again.

Violently.

As if reacting to the truth.

Or afraid of it.

Aarav stood there.

Broken.

Confused.

Angry.

"…So what now?"

Mira stepped forward.

"…Now we choose."

Silence.

"…Either I stop you…"

Her mark glowed brighter.

"…or I help you become something that might destroy everything."

Aarav's eyes darkened.

"…And what do you want?"

Mira hesitated.

For the first time—

She didn't have an answer.

🌑

Far away—

The Seventh Door began to crack again.

But this time—

From both sides.
