Chapter 1 - Chapter One

Freya's pov

I awoke to a quiet winter morning as the overnight snow had dulled even the softest sound

I hated waking up to frosty winter mornings; it made me want to curl back in bed and hibernate until spring came.

I made my way into my tiny bathroom. Turning on the fluorescent light.

I stripped out of my pajamas and headed straight into the steaming hot shower.

As soon as the water turned cold I quickly stepped out and brushed my teeth and then changed into my uniform.

The normally bustling city was eerily silent and serene as I walked three blocks to the diner, my breath visible in the chilly air.

I opened the door and the sweet aroma of coffee and freshly baked croissants hit my nostrils causing my stomach to growl loudly.

"Goodmorning Freya." Maggie, my boss greeted me with a wide smile.

Maggie is a woman in her late fourties. She lost her family in a car accident a few years ago. I feel bad for her I can't imagine the pain she went through, losing her husband and kids on the same day.

" Morning Maggie." I greeted mirroring her smile.

"I made you some breakfast." She said, placing a plate filled with bacon, eggs, toast and a large cup of strong black coffee on the table.

"Thank you Maggie." I beamed plopping down on the chair ready to devour my breakfast.

This is how our mornings begin, Maggie always prepares breakfast for us before we open up the diner.

She's such a sweet and kind hearted person.

Growing up my life was never perfect nor was it exciting. Truth be told it was miserable. My parents separated when I was just two years old. I never got the chance of knowing who my father was because he left.

I never met him, I only saw a picture of his which I found hidden in my mother's drawer. I never asked about him nor did my mother tell me anything about him all she ever said was he met someone else and left.

I never did worry to enquire about him or look for him if he really cared about me he wouldn't have left in the first place.

As for my mother she was a drug addict and an alcoholic as well. We never actually got along. She hated me because I reminded her of my father, the man who left her for another woman.

She used beat me up whenever she didn't have her drugs or alcohol, she told me how much she hated me and that I destroyed her life.

Most of the time we never had anything to eat because her earnings used to go toward her addiction.

But when I turned Seventeen I noticed things started to slowly change. My mother wore expensive clothing and jewelery, groceries were bought, rent was paid in full and on time and she even purchased new furniture.

I thought maybe she had changed and gave up her addiction but I was wrong. She was still the same person.

My mother had found herself a new boyfriend and he wasn't just anyone he was a drug lord.

I still remember that day, it's forever etched into my memory, the day I left home because my mother was going to sell me off to her boyfriend.

I run away from home, I no longer wanted anything to do with her because she wasn't a mother but an evil woman that only cared about herself.

The day I left was the day I run into Maggie's café and pleaded her to help me from the criminals that were chasing after me. I then explained to her my entire story and how my mother wanted to hand me off to a druglord and without hesitation she helped me.

Maggie's like a mother to me, she's the mother I always wished to have since I was a little girl.

Lost in thought I didn't hear Kimberly come in until she poured herself some coffee and plopped down in front of me.

Kimberly is my co-worker and my best friend. Since the day I started working here the two of us got along like an house on fire. I admired Kimberly's feirce and bold nature.

Deep down I yearned to be like her. She's so brave and strong and me I'm just a meek little girl with a troubled childhood, desperately trying to get my life together.

I wish my life hadn't been so depressing.

"You seem a little lost, we're you thinking about Luke?"

A small smile tugged at the end of my lips.

Luke is my boyfriend, we've been dating for nearly three months now.

It was last year that we met, he's a regular customer here at the diner and that's how we started dating.

Luke's a doctor, well a very hot doctor to be precise and a few years older than me.

I've been noticing for the past two weeks he's been avoiding me

he hardly calls, text or meets me.

Maybe I should surprise him tonight at his apartment, after work.

"No, I wasn't thinking about him." I replied to Kimberly.

"Then what exactly were you thinking off?" She probed, raising a brow.

I shrugged. "Nothing important."

The day goes by in a blur and here I am standing in front of Luke's apartment.

I lift my hand to knock but realize the door is opened. How come I didn't notice?

I push open the door and step into his plush apartment. I've been here on many occasions but I haven't stayed. I wasn't ready to move in although he kept on bugging me but I refused.

I felt it was too soon to move to the next level.

As I slowly began to move further inside, I heard sounds - cries that were unmistakably moans.

I desperately hoped my ears deceived me, praying it wasn't luke in there with another woman.

Is that why he's been avoiding me? I thought.

My first instinct was to turn away and leave to shield myself from the painful truth and to live in denial. But curiosity and a need for truth propelled me forward.

Mustering all the courage, I approached the bedroom door and gently pushed it open. The scene infront of me stole the breath from my lungs. It was like a physical punch to the gut.

The man who I thought loved me was locked in a passionate intimacy with the girl whom I thought was my best friend.

They seemed so engrossed in their sinful passion that they hardly noticed me.

Tears began to cloud my vision, I felt hurt and betrayed. I thought these people cared about me but I guess it was just a facade. I slowly closed the door and stormed out of the apartment with tears pouring down my face.
