Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: A Promise Beyond Death

Han Zhong could not believe his eyes.

He fell to his knees beside the cold tombstone, his hands trembling so badly that he could barely lift them. The moonlight spilled over Zi Yu's figure, soft and pale, but she did not fade like a mist or vanish like a fleeting dream. She stood there, just as he remembered her, with her long black hair flowing gently and her eyes warm with the same quiet love she had always held for him.

"You're really here," he whispered, his voice cracked with grief and disbelief. Tears streamed down his face, mixing with the dirt on his cheeks. "I thought I lost you forever. I thought I would never see you again."

Zi Yu stepped closer, her feet making no sound on the quiet grass. She reached out a hand, and though her touch was cool, it was not empty. It felt real, gentle, a comfort he had thought he would never feel again.

"I told you I would wait," she said softly, her voice like a faint breeze on a quiet night. "I promised I would marry you. Death cannot break a promise that is made with all my heart."

Han Zhong looked up at her, his heart aching with love and sorrow. He had left to study hard, to earn a better name, to prove to the king that he was worthy of her hand. He had planned to return and beg the king for permission, full of hope that their love could win out.

But he had been too late.

"I should have come back sooner," he said, his voice full of regret. "I was foolish to leave you alone. I should have stayed and fought for us."

Zi Yu shook her head, her expression gentle and free of blame. "It was not your fault. My father's anger was too strong, and my heart could not bear the pain of being separated from you. I faded away, but my soul could not leave. I could not move on without keeping my word to you."

She paused, her eyes dark with a quiet sadness, but her love never wavered.

"I am a ghost now, bound to this tomb, bound to you," she said. "I cannot walk in the sunlight, I cannot eat or drink like a living person. But I can stay here, with you, as long as you will have me."

Han Zhong reached up and held her hand tightly, refusing to let go. He did not care that she was no longer living. He did not care that she was a spirit from the afterlife.

She was Zi Yu.

The woman he loved, the only one he would ever love.

"I will stay," he said firmly, his voice strong and full of devotion. "I will live right here, beside your tomb. I will stay with you every day, every night. I will never leave you again, not for anything."

A soft, sad smile touched Zi Yu's lips. She knew that this life would be hard for him—lonely, quiet, cut off from the rest of the world. But she could see the truth in his eyes: he meant every word.

Their love had not died with her.

It had only become eternal.

As the moon rose higher in the dark sky, the two figures stayed beside the tomb, talking quietly through the night. They spoke of their old memories, their secret meetings, the dreams they had once shared for a life together.

And though death had torn them apart once, it would never separate them again.

Their forbidden love had conquered even the grave.
