Chapter 8 - Chapter 2.7 - Part 7 - Outrunning the Corridor

Marcus crossed the threshold at full speed, but he did not stop immediately on the other side.

Momentum carried him forward two more steps into the chamber before his boots hit stable ground in a way that felt solid again. The difference was instant and jarring. The pressure vanished. The distortion collapsed. The sound of the facility rushed back all at once, loud, sharp, and real.

Maya came through right behind him, catching herself against the doorframe as her footing slipped for half a second. She steadied herself quickly, one hand braced against the metal as she pulled herself upright.

Elias followed a heartbeat later and stumbled hard into the room, losing his balance completely as he hit the ground. He rolled onto his side, breathing unevenly, his glasses slightly askew.

"I am officially done with that corridor," Elias said, not getting up right away.

Marcus turned immediately.

Inside the chamber, the hallway they had just escaped from looked normal.

Perfectly normal.

Concrete walls. Standard lighting. A fixed endpoint exactly where it should be.

There was no visible distortion.

No movement.

No indication that anything had been wrong at all.

For a moment, no one spoke.

Then Sergeant Kim stepped forward, her rifle still raised, her eyes moving between the three of them as if confirming they were actually there.

"Commander," Kim said. "Report."

Marcus did not answer immediately. He kept his eyes on the corridor for another second, as if expecting it to change again.

It did not.

"Seal the chamber," Marcus said.

Kim did not hesitate. She turned sharply toward the control panel and signaled to the others. "Seal it now," Kim ordered.

The heavy containment door began to slide shut with a deep, mechanical grind. The sound echoed through the chamber, slow and final.

Maya stepped away from the doorway as it closed, her posture still tense. She folded her arms briefly, then dropped them again as if the position felt too restrictive.

"That should not be stable," Maya said, watching the door. "It should still be active."

Elias pushed himself up onto his elbows, still on the floor. "I am not going back in there to verify that," Elias said.

"You are not being asked to," Maya replied.

"I am just making my position clear," Elias said.

Marcus finally looked away from the sealed door and turned back toward the room.

"Status," Marcus said.

Kim lowered her rifle slightly but kept it ready. "We maintained the perimeter. No breach beyond this chamber," Kim said. "However, we lost two tracking feeds during your time inside. Both teams are unresponsive."

Maya's expression tightened. "Lost as in signal interference," Maya said, "or lost as in—"

Kim did not soften it. "Lost as in no response."

Elias looked between them, his voice quieter now. "They went in before us," Elias said.

Marcus nodded once. "Yeah," Marcus said.

Behind them, the sealed door gave a faint, almost imperceptible sound.

Not mechanical.

Not structural.

Something else.

Maya turned her head slightly. "Did you hear that?" Maya asked.

Marcus did not turn this time. "Yeah," Marcus said.

Elias froze where he sat. "I am choosing to ignore that," Elias said.

Kim glanced at the door, then back to Marcus. "Do we reinforce containment?" Kim asked.

"Yes," Marcus said immediately. "Full lockdown. No one goes near that chamber without authorization."

Kim nodded. "Understood."

She turned and began issuing orders, her voice sharp and controlled as additional security personnel moved into position. Reinforcement teams arrived quickly, locking down adjacent corridors and setting up secondary barriers.

The facility was still in motion around them.

People were still running.

Systems were still failing in other sectors.

But here, for a moment, things held.

Maya stepped away from the door and exhaled slowly, her composure returning in layers.

"It adapted faster than expected," Maya said. "The duplication was only one function. The real threat was environmental control."

Elias pushed himself fully upright now, adjusting his glasses as he spoke. "It did not just control space," Elias said. "It rewrote how space behaved relative to us."

Marcus nodded. "It learned us," Marcus said.

Maya looked at him. "And you broke that," Maya said.

Marcus shrugged slightly. "For a minute," Marcus said.

Elias let out a quiet breath. "That minute saved us," Elias said.

Another faint sound came from the other side of the sealed door.

This time, it was clearer.

A voice.

Distorted.

Layered.

Familiar.

"Stay."

Maya went still.

Elias did not move at all.

Marcus kept his eyes forward.

"No one opens that door," Marcus said.

Kim's voice came from across the room. "Already locked, sir," Kim replied.

The chamber lights flickered once.

Then stabilized.

Marcus finally stepped away from the door.

"We are done here," Marcus said.

Maya glanced back once more before following him. "For now," Maya said.

Elias hesitated, then stood and moved after them, keeping a noticeable distance from the sealed chamber.

"Yes," Elias said quietly. "For now."

Behind them, the chamber remained closed.

Silent.

Still.

But not empty.
