Chapter 137 - The Throne of Ash

The heavy double doors of the Great Hall buckled inward, shattering the ancient oak latch as Daniel kicked them open.

The inner sanctum was vast and icy, illuminated only by the faint blue luminescence of the grand star-steel conduit running down the center of the vaulted ceiling. At the far end of the chamber, sitting high atop a dais of black granite, was High Commander Arthur.

He looked shockingly calm. His long white cloak was pinned at the collar with the grand crest of the Covenant, and his hand rested casually on the pommel of a thin, ornate ceremonial rapier.

Standing to his right was Bill, his arms folded neatly into his long scholar sleeves.

"So," Arthur's voice echoed through the high-vaulted rafters, smooth and devoid of warm human emotion. "The mountain could not hold you. The Heart is shattered, the tether is broken, and you stand in my hall like conquerors."

Daniel stepped into the hall, his boots leaving faint, smoldering footprints on the polished black tile. Mary walked tightly at his left flank, her twin rapiers raised, while Lily and Finn trailed behind, securing the entrance.

"It's over, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice carrying the deep, resonant vibration of the crimson heat sleeping beneath his skin. "The silver badges were a lie. You didn't tether us to protect the realm—you tethered us to siphon our strength to feed the spire."

Arthur smiled thinly, standing up from his chair. "A necessary sacrifice. Operatives are weapons, Daniel. And weapons must be bound to a hand, lest they tear apart the world they were forged to defend."

"We aren't weapons," Mary snapped, her eyes burning with fierce contempt. "We are the Ghost Killers. And we answer to no puppet master."

Arthur glanced past Daniel, his eyes fixing on Bill. "They carry too much heat, old friend. Execute Contingency Nine. Wipe the hall."

Bill didn't move.

Arthur frowned, his sharp gaze shifting back to his oldest advisor. "Bill?"

Bill let out a soft, weary sigh. He reached into his robe and pulled out a small, amber glass vial—the same altered vervain formula he had passed to Daniel before the mountain expedition. He casually let it drop to the floor. The glass shattered, spilling the golden liquid across the dark marble.

"I spent forty years helping you build this leash, Arthur," Bill said quietly, his voice heavy with decades of regret. "I thought it was the only way to keep the dark from drowning us. But watching these kids climb that peak... seeing them break the mountain with their own hands and stand together... I realized you weren't building a shield. You were building a cage."

Arthur's face finally cracked, his jaw clenching as a cold, dangerous fury flashed in his eyes. He drew his rapier—its blade instantly igniting with a sickly, pale white flame.

"Then you die with them, old man," Arthur spat.

"You'll have to go through us first," Daniel said, taking three long strides up the marble steps of the dais, his hand pulling his sword free as crimson fire roared to life along its edge.

Mary moved alongside him, her twin blades catching the red glare.

Outside, the distant thunder of Felix's broadsword striking Vane's guards echoed through the courtyard. Inside, Daniel and Mary raised their weapons together, stepping into the final clash for the future of the Academy.
