Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: First Day at UA

Izuku and Uraraka walked through the halls of UA, surrounded by students in matching uniforms. The building was massive—high ceilings, long corridors, doors with class designations he'd only ever seen in anime.

Uraraka glanced around. "Do you have any idea where we're going?"

"I assumed you did," Izuku said.

"I assumed YOU did."

They stared at each other.

"We're lost," Izuku said.

"We're so lost," Uraraka agreed.

They wandered for a bit, passing other classrooms. 1-B. 1-C. A door that just said "SUPPORT" with sparks flying out from under it. Another door with "GENERAL STUDIES" where they could hear someone passionately arguing about something.

Eventually, they found it. A door with a massive "1-A" on it.

Uraraka grinned. "This is it!"

"Let's hope."

Izuku slid the door open.

The classroom was already mostly full. Students scattered across desks, talking, laughing, ignoring each other, brooding in corners.

Kirishima and Kaminari were chatting loudly near the window, Kirishima gesturing wildly about something. Jiro sat with her feet on her desk, looking bored out of her mind. Ashido animatedly talked to Sero, who nodded along with tape dispensers glinting on his elbows.

Tokoyami brooded by the window with Dark Shadow peeking out from under his collar. Shoji sat in the back, quiet and massive, multiple arms folded. Aoyama sparkled in his seat for absolutely no reason, throwing a wink at no one in particular.

Sato calmly read a book. Koda hid behind a plant, peeking out occasionally. Ojiro sat quietly with his tail wrapped around his chair leg. Hagakure's uniform floated—no visible body inside it—and she seemed to be chatting with someone nearby.

Yaoyorozu sat primly, reviewing notes with intense focus. Todoroki stared out the window, expression completely blank, heterochromatic eyes seeing nothing.

Izuku took it all in. This is the class. This is where it starts.

He spotted two empty seats near the middle. Uraraka slid into one, he took the other.

A few people glanced his way—the Zero Pointer guy—but most were too caught up in their own conversations.

His eyes landed on the back corner.

Bakugo sat with his feet on his desk, arms crossed, radiating pure "don't talk to me" energy. The seat next to him was empty. No one wanted to sit next to Bakugo.

Iida marched over to Bakugo, arm chopping with mechanical precision.

Iida: "You there! It is incredibly disrespectful to put your feet on the desk! This is a place of learning, not your living room!"

Bakugo: "Tch. What's it to you, glasses?"

Iida: "It is a matter of basic decorum! As fellow classmates, we must maintain—"

Bakugo: "I don't care. Sit down and shut up."

Iida's face reddened. "That is no way to speak to—"

Izuku stood up. Walked over.

Izuku: "Iida, right?"

Iida turned, recognized him. "You're the one from the briefing! The one who—" He stopped, embarrassed.

Izuku: "Yeah. Look, he's not going to move his feet. You're not wrong, but you're also not going to win this argument."

Iida paused. Processed. His shoulders dropped slightly.

Iida: "You... make a fair point. I suppose there is wisdom in choosing when to engage."

Bakugo scoffed: "Tch. Deku playing mediator. Whatever."

Izuku ignored him, turning back to Iida. "You did well in the exam, by the way. Saw you moving through the city. Your speed's impressive."

Iida perked up. "You noticed? I focused on efficiency and momentum! My brother always said—" He stopped, cleared his throat. "Apologies. I tend to ramble when discussing technique."

Izuku: "Nothing wrong with that. It's good to be passionate."

Iida straightened his glasses. "You showed remarkable tactical awareness during the Zero Pointer. Multiple examinees mentioned your quick thinking. I misjudged you at the briefing. You handled yourself with... unexpected composure."

Izuku: "Thanks. You handled yourself too. We all did our best."

Iida nodded, satisfied. He started to say something else—

The door slid open.

Everyone turned.

A yellow sleeping bag lay on the floor. Just lying there.

Students stared.

Kirishima: "Uh... is that...?"

Kaminari: "Did someone lose their... bed?"

Ashido: "Is there a person in there?"

The sleeping bag moved.

It slowly rolled into the room.

Stopped at the front.

Sat up.

Unzipped.

A man emerged like a caterpillar from a cocoon. Messy black hair. Dark circles under his eyes. Scruffy stubble. Bandages wrapped around his neck and arms.

He looked like he hadn't slept in years.

Students stared in stunned silence.

Izuku's lips twitched. Earthworm. He looks like a tired earthworm.

Aizawa glanced around the room. At the frozen students. At the silence.

Aizawa: "It took you eight seconds to quiet down."

Dead silence.

Aizawa: "That's pathetic. You're hero candidates. You should be aware of your surroundings at all times. A sleeping bag on the floor shouldn't take you eight seconds to process."

Kirishima whispered: "Who is this guy?"

Aizawa's eyes snapped to him. "I'm your homeroom teacher. Aizawa Shota. Now grab your gym uniforms and meet me outside. We're doing a quirk assessment test."

Iida stood immediately. "But what about orientation? And guidance counseling? And the welcome ceremony?"

Aizawa: "If you want to waste time with ceremonies, you're free to. But UA's hero course isn't like other schools. We don't do formalities. We do training."

He looked around the room.

"You're here to become heroes. That starts now. Move."

Students filed out, confused and nervous. Izuku and Uraraka walked toward the locker rooms.

Uraraka: "Is that guy for real? He looked like he crawled out of a dumpster."

Izuku: "He's a pro hero. Eraserhead. Underground hero."

Uraraka: "You know him?"

Izuku: "I've heard of him. He's supposed to be really good. Works in the shadows, not the spotlight."

Uraraka: "Well, he's definitely not spotlights material."

They split—boys to one locker room, girls to another.

Izuku changed into his gym uniform. Caught his reflection in the mirror.

Broader shoulders. More defined muscles. Taller frame.

He actually looked like he belonged here now.

Kirishima appeared nearby. "Dude, you're built! You work out?"

Izuku: "Yeah. Trainer made me do a lot of beach cleanup."

Kirishima: "Beach cleanup? That's random."

Izuku: "You'd be surprised what you can lift when it's covered in garbage. Car tires, refrigerators, old furniture. Builds character."

Kirishima: "Huh. Maybe I should try that."

Kaminari popped over. "Hey, you're the Zero Pointer guy, right? That was insane! I saw you climbing it from across the city!"

Izuku: "I just hit where it made sense to hit."

Kaminari: "Dude, you climbed a building-sized robot! That's not 'just' anything!"

Sero joined in: "Yeah, my tape wouldn't have reached that high. How'd you even get up there?"

Izuku shrugged. "Jumped. Climbed. Same as everyone else would have."

Kirishima: "Nah man, most of us would've run. That was brave."

Izuku: "Someone had to do it."

They headed out to the field, the group naturally gravitating around him.

The class gathered on the field, a mix of nerves and excitement. Aizawa stood with a softball in his hand.

Aizawa: "We're doing a quirk apprehension test. Eight physical tests to measure your capabilities."

Murmurs rippled through the class.

Aizawa: "Bakugo. What was your best result in middle school for the ball throw? Without your quirk."

Bakugo: "Tch. 67 meters."

Aizawa: "Now try with your quirk. Anything goes. Just stay in the circle."

Bakugo stepped up. Smirked.

Wound up. Explosion built in his palm.

He launched the ball with a massive blast—shockwave rippled across the field.

The ball disappeared into the sky.

Aizawa showed the reading: 705.2 meters.

The class reacted—shock, awe.

Kirishima: "Dude! That's insane!"

Kaminari: "705 meters?! That's like... really far!"

Ashido: "This is gonna be so fun! Using our quirks freely like this!"

A few others nodded, excited murmurs spreading.

Aizawa's eyes narrowed.

Aizawa: "Fun?"

Silence.

Aizawa: "You think this is fun? A game?"

The excitement died instantly.

Aizawa: "You're here to become heroes. Not to have fun. If you think using your quirks is about enjoyment, you're in the wrong place."

Dead silence.

Aizawa: "The person with the lowest overall score will be expelled."

Panic rippled through the class.

Aizawa: "UA doesn't coddle. If you can't keep up, you don't belong. Simple. Now line up for the 50-meter dash."

The tests began.

50-Meter Dash:

Iida activated his engines—blazed through in 3.04 seconds.

Bakugo used explosions—3.2 seconds, furious he wasn't first.

Ashido slid on acid—fast but left a trail.

Sero swung with tape—creative but slower.

Kaminari tried electricity—misfired, twitched, ended up fried.

Uraraka made herself weightless—floated more than ran, taking forever.

Todoroki jogged it in 3.5 seconds, clearly not trying.

Then Izuku stepped up. Felt the Bast trait humming—reflexes sharp, balance perfect.

Five percent.

He exploded forward. 3.0 seconds.

The timer flashed.

Kirishima: "Whoa! 3.0!"

Kaminari: "He beat Iida!"

Iida: "Impressive acceleration! Your form was excellent!"

Bakugo's head snapped toward the timer. Then toward Izuku. His jaw tightened.

Standing Long Jump:

Bakugo used explosions—11.2 meters.

Todoroki used an ice platform—10.5 meters.

Iida managed 9.1 meters.

Izuku crouched. Jumped.

11.5 meters. Landed perfectly, Bast trait guiding his balance.

Kirishima: "Dude's part frog or something!"

Bakugo stared at the distance. Then at Izuku. His fists clenched. He was losing to Deku. The quirkless Deku. The useless Deku who used to follow him around with a notebook.

Except he wasn't quirkless anymore. When did that happen? How did that happen?

Grip Strength:

Shoji dominated with 190 kg, multiple arms flexing.

Kirishima hit 150 kg with hardening.

Bakugo managed 120 kg.

Izuku gripped. Pushed 5% through his hand. 135 kg.

Bakugo's eye twitched violently. Deku had better grip strength than him. DEKU.

Repeated Side Steps:

Ashido slid to 81 steps on her acid.

Jiro hit 68 with good footwork.

Bakugo managed 65.

Izuku's feet blurred. Bast trait made every step efficient, balanced, quick.

78 steps.

Ashido: "How are you so fast sideways?!"

Izuku: "Good reflexes."

Bakugo's breathing was getting heavier. His fists wouldn't unclench.

Sit and Reach:

Izuku sat down. Reached forward. Kept reaching.

His torso folded like he didn't have bones—Flexible trait in full effect. His fingers passed his toes by half a meter. Then more.

The measuring stick ran out.

Kirishima: "Dude, are you made of rubber?!"

Toru: "That's not normal! I can't see it but I can TELL it's not normal!"

Aoyama: "Très flexible! Magnifique!"

Izuku straightened. "Comes in handy."

Bakugo watched. His mind raced. When did he get a quirk? Why didn't anyone tell me? He's been hiding this the whole time? All those years of following me around, writing in that notebook, and he had a quirk the whole time?

Endurance Run (1200m):

Iida led, engines roaring.

Bakugo pushed hard, explosions propelling him.

Todoroki ice-slid most of it, conserving energy.

Izuku paced himself with 5%, Bast trait keeping his form efficient.

Izuku finished 4th.

The final test. Ball throw.

Students went one by one.

Yaoyorozu created a launcher—400 meters. Smart.

Todoroki froze his ball and launched it—800 meters. Effortless. The class stared in disbelief.

Kirishima: "800?! That's insane!"

Kaminari: "He didn't even try!"

Bakugo's 705.2 meters already stood, but now it felt smaller.

Then Izuku's turn.

He stepped into the circle. Felt eyes on him—Bakugo's glare, Uraraka's encouragement, Aizawa's assessing gaze.

Five percent is comfortable. But I need to know.

He wound up. Activated Full Cowling. 5%. Then pushed. 6%. 7%. His muscles strained. Held.

More.

8%. The edge. Pain, but not breaking.

He threw.

The ball launched—sharp crack, screaming into the sky.

Aizawa checked the reading. 528 meters.

Murmurs spread. "528... that's huge for a physical quirk."

Kirishima: "Dude's got serious power!"

Kaminari: "And he's flexible and fast and strong? Not fair."

Bakugo stood frozen. 528 meters. Deku threw 528 meters. The same Deku who was supposed to be quirkless. The same Deku he'd dismissed for years.

His hands started shaking.

Izuku walked back, shaking out his arm. No breaks. Just the ache.

8%. Good to know.

Scores compiled. Rankings appeared on the screen:

Yaoyorozu Momo — 1st

Todoroki Shoto — 2nd

Midoriya Izuku — 3rd

Bakugo Katsuki — 4th

Iida Tenya — 5th

Tokoyami Fumikage — 6th

Shoji Mezo — 7th

Ojiro Mashirao — 8th

Kirishima Eijiro — 9th

Ashido Mina — 10th

Uraraka Ochaco — 11th

Koda Koji — 12th

Sato Rikido — 13th

Asui Tsuyu — 14th

Aoyama Yuga — 15th

Sero Hanta — 16th

Kaminari Denki — 17th

Jiro Kyoka — 18th

Hagakure Toru — 19th

Mineta Minoru — 20th

The class murmured. Third place. Midoriya above Bakugo.

Bakugo stood frozen. His whole body trembled. His fists clenched so tight his knuckles went white. His breathing came in short, sharp bursts.

He turned toward Izuku. His face was red. His eyes were wild.

Bakugo: "DEKU!"

The class went silent.

Bakugo stormed toward him, explosions crackling in his palms.

Bakugo: "WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! YOU'VE BEEN HOLDING BACK THIS WHOLE TIME?! YOU HAD A QUIRK AND YOU JUST—YOU JUST LET ME—"

Izuku didn't flinch. Didn't step back. Just watched him calmly.

Bakugo: "ALL THOSE YEARS! ALL THOSE YEARS OF YOU FOLLOWING ME AROUND WITH THAT STUPID NOTEBOOK AND YOU HAD A QUIRK THE WHOLE TIME?! WERE YOU LAUGHING AT ME?! WAS THAT IT?!"

Sparks flew from his hands. The temperature rose.

Izuku: "I wasn't laughing, Kacchan."

Bakugo: "DON'T CALL ME THAT! YOU DON'T GET TO CALL ME THAT! YOU—"

Aizawa: "Bakugo."

The voice cut through like a blade.

Bakugo's head snapped toward him.

Aizawa's eyes were flat. Tired. But there was something underneath. A warning. His capture weapon floated slightly, uncoiling.

Aizawa: "That's enough."

Bakugo: "But he—"

Aizawa: "I said that's enough. You want to pick fights with classmates on your first day? Take it outside. Better yet, don't take it anywhere. Cool down. Now."

Bakugo stood there. Shaking. Fighting. His palms still crackling.

Aizawa: "That wasn't a suggestion."

A long moment passed. The class held their breath.

Then Bakugo turned and walked. Not toward anyone. Just away. His footsteps heavy. His fists still clenched.

He stopped at the edge of the field. Looked back once. At Izuku. Something unreadable in his expression. Then he kept walking.

The class exhaled.

Kirishima: "What was THAT about?"

Kaminari: "They know each other?"

Uraraka moved closer to Izuku. "You okay?"

Izuku: "Fine. He's just processing."

Uraraka: "Processing what?"

Izuku: "Years of things at once."

Mineta: "I'm expelled?!"

Aizawa stared. Long pause.

Aizawa: "I lied. It was a logical ruse to see how you'd perform under pressure."

Outrage.

Kirishima: "That's messed up!"

Kaminari: "I almost had a heart attack!"

Ashido: "Not funny!"

Yaoyorozu: "It was obvious that was a lie."

The class turned to look at her.

Yaoyorozu adjusted her ponytail calmly. "Expelling a student on the first day without any prior warning or academic review would be not only unprecedented but likely against UA's own policies. The probability of it being a psychological tactic was extremely high."

Kaminari: "You could've told us!"

Yaoyorozu: "I assumed everyone reached the same conclusion."

Awkward silence.

Izuku glanced at her. Naive. Aizawa doesn't care about policies. He'd expel someone if he thought it would make a point. She's smart but doesn't understand underground heroes yet.

Aizawa: "Welcome to UA. Get used to it."

He walked away, capture weapon trailing behind him.

A blue screen flickered in Izuku's vision.

[ FEAT ACHIEVED: RANKED WITHIN TOP STUDENTS DURING U.A.'S QUIRK ASSESSMENT TEST ]

[ +1 BRONZE GACHA TICKET ]

Izuku glanced at it. Might as well roll it now.

He focused on the screen. The ticket spun.

[ ONE SIZE FITS ALL ]

[ COMMON TRAIT ]

Your partners no longer feel any discomfort with your physical features. This extends to your phallus somehow fitting inside of them even if it reaches ludicrous sizes.

Izuku blinked.

Read it again.

Looked at the sky.

"...huh."

He dismissed the screen.

Well. That's going to be useful eventually.

He filed it away and kept walking.

Students headed back to change. Uraraka caught up to him.

Uraraka: "Third place! That's amazing! But what happened with Bakugo? He looked ready to kill you."

Izuku: "We grew up together. He... didn't know about my quirk."

Uraraka: "You didn't tell him?"

Izuku: "It's complicated. I only got it recently."

Uraraka: "Oh. Well, he still shouldn't have yelled at you like that."

Izuku: "He'll cool down. Eventually."

Iida approached. "Midoriya! Third place! Excellent work! And your confrontation with Bakugo—you showed remarkable restraint!"

Izuku: "No point in fighting back. He needed to vent."

Iida: "Admirable! Truly admirable! I misjudged you at the briefing, but now I see—you have the temperament of a true leader!"

Izuku: "Thanks. You were fifth. Good consistency across all tests."

Iida: "Fifth! I must train harder! Much harder! Perhaps we can train together sometime? Your flexibility and tactical mind could teach me so much!"

Izuku: "Maybe. Your speed could teach me a thing or two about efficiency."

Iida: "A fair exchange! I will contact you to arrange a schedule!"

Iida marched off, determined.

They didn't see Bakugo again.

Izuku pulled out his phone while walking. Texted Inko:

First day done. Not dead. No broken bones. Teacher lied about expelling someone. Ranked 3rd overall. Pushed to 8% on final throw—528 meters. Flexibility freaked everyone out. Bakugo yelled at me. Aizawa stopped him.

Inko: 3RD?! MY BABY IS 3RD IN THE WHOLE CLASS?! THE CATS ARE CELEBRATING!

Izuku: Mom, the cats don't know what 3rd means.

Inko: THEY SENSE IT! OCHACO (THE CAT) IS SITTING ON YOUR BED LOOKING PROUD! ALSO THERE ARE NOW 15 CATS. FOUR NEW ONES ARRIVED.

Izuku: ...15.

Inko: THEIR NAMES ARE FLEX, NOODLE, BASTET, AND NOW THIRD. HE'S VERY PROUD.

Izuku: Mom, you can't name a cat "Third."

Inko: I JUST DID. HE'S SITTING ON YOUR PILLOW LIKE HE OWNS IT. HE HAS PRESENCE.

Izuku: ...I need to sit down.

Inko: COME HOME SAFE I LOVE YOU

Izuku: Love you too, Mom.

Izuku and Uraraka walked toward the gates together. Sun setting. First day done.

Uraraka: "Can you believe we actually made it? And you're third!"

Izuku: "We passed the exam. This was day one. Lots more to go."

Uraraka: "You're so calm about being third."

Izuku: "It's just a number. Today taught me where my limits are. That's more valuable."

Uraraka: "That's really mature."

Izuku: "I get that a lot."

They reached the gates.

Uraraka: "Same time tomorrow?"

Izuku: "Yeah. Don't be late."

Uraraka: "Me? Late? Never."

She tripped on absolutely nothing.

Izuku caught her arm—Bast reflexes, smooth and quick.

Uraraka: "...I walked into that one."

Izuku: "Literally and metaphorically."

She laughed, cheeks pink. "Shut up. See you tomorrow."

She walked away, tripped again immediately, recovered with surprising grace.

Izuku watched her go, shaking his head.

Definitely cute. Lucky Romantic doing work.

His phone buzzed.

Inko: FLEX JUST DID A BACKBEND. BASTET CAUGHT A FLY. THIRD IS JUDGING EVERYONE. NOODLE IS WATCHING. I'M LIVING IN A SUPERHERO CAT HOUSE.

Izuku: They'll figure it out. Cats are good at that.

He walked toward the train station, smiling slightly. Arm sore. Legs tired. No breaks.

3rd place. One very interesting trait. Bakugo's going to be a problem later. But that's future me's problem.

He smiled.

Good first day.
