Chapter 10: Not That Partner
The afternoon sun streamed through the classroom windows, painting long, golden stripes across the desks.
Tae Kook sat quietly near the back, his notebook open but untouched. His mind wasn't on homework—it was on Han Soo Min, sitting across the room, carefully folding her papers, methodical as ever.
"…Impossible," he muttered softly. "…How is she always so calm?"
A sudden nudge from Yoo Min Ho snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Oi! Kooky! Teacher just said we're doing partner assignments!"
Tae Kook blinked. "…Partner assignments?"
Min Ho grinned, clearly amused. "Yes, genius! And guess who your partner is…?"
Tae Kook didn't respond. He already knew.
Min Ho's grin widened. "Yup! Han Soo Min. Consider yourself officially doomed."
"…Doomed?" Tae Kook echoed, his voice flat.
"Yes! Congratulations! You get to… interact… more than your comfort level allows."
Tae Kook groaned softly. "…She noticed nothing. Why now?"
From her seat, Han Soo Min looked up calmly. "…Kim Tae Kook?" she asked softly. "Are we… partners?"
Tae Kook's chest tightened. "…Yes."
"…Good," she replied, not smiling, not frowning. Just… calm. Collected. Unshaken.
Meanwhile, Ae Rin crouched behind the classroom door, notebook in hand, scribbling like a tiny whirlwind.
"…Observation 91: Kooky officially trapped," she whispered. "…Observation 92: He cannot escape. Observation 93: Soo Min has no idea how much danger she just walked into." She giggled softly.
Min Ho leaned over Tae Kook's shoulder. "So… what's the plan, genius? You're going to sit there and stare again? Or actually… talk?"
"…Talk… carefully," Tae Kook muttered under his breath. "…Quietly. Controlled."
The teacher clapped her hands. "Pairs, please arrange yourselves and begin!"
Tae Kook slowly rose, his heart quietly accelerating. He walked toward Han Soo Min, careful not to appear too eager—or too nervous.
Min Ho made a show of giving him an exaggerated thumbs-up. "Good luck, man. Don't die."
"…Annoying," Tae Kook muttered.
Han Soo Min already had her notebook open, waiting. Her pen hovered above the paper, poised, calm, ready.
"…Kim Tae Kook," she said softly.
"…Han Soo Min," he replied, matching her quiet tone.
Silence stretched between them. Not awkward. Not tense. Just… awareness.
Ae Rin, scribbling furiously behind a row of desks, whispered:
"…Observation 94: Kooky internally screaming. Observation 95: He actually cares more than he admits. Observation 96: This is going to be entertaining."
Tae Kook cleared his throat. "…We should decide who writes and who presents," he said carefully. "…Efficient division."
Han Soo Min tilted her head slightly. "…I can write. You can… organize."
"…Organize?" Tae Kook echoed. "…Yes… organize," he said softly, almost whispering.
Min Ho, pretending to be busy, whispered dramatically from his seat behind them:
"OOOOH! This is good. He's using controlled efficiency as an excuse to be near her. Genius—or disaster?"
Tae Kook gave him a sharp glance. "…Shut up."
As they worked quietly, the classroom noise faded into the background. Tae Kook found himself glancing at her occasionally, just observing—how she held her pen, how she flipped the page, how calm she remained despite the chaos around them.
"…She's… different," he thought quietly. "…Impossible to read. Dangerous."
Han Soo Min glanced at him briefly. "…You notice a lot," she said softly.
Tae Kook froze. "…What?"
"…Small details. Little things. Most people don't," she added, almost as if it were an afterthought.
Tae Kook's chest tightened. "…I notice everything," he muttered softly. "…Not all of it matters."
She looked at him calmly. "…Some of it does," she said simply, returning her gaze to her notebook.
From behind the desk, Ae Rin scribbled in wild excitement:
"…Observation 97: Kooky officially unsettled. Observation 98: He's intrigued. Observation 99: Soo Min notices things… too."
Min Ho leaned back, laughing quietly. "Man, this is perfect. I should sit back and watch all the fireworks."
Tae Kook gave him a pointed look. "…Do not watch."
They continued working side by side, quietly, efficiently.
No words. Few movements.
Yet every glance, every small motion carried weight.
Tae Kook realized slowly… he had been avoiding this. Avoiding noticing, avoiding caring.
But now…
He couldn't stop.
The bell rang again.
Assignments were half-done. Papers stacked neatly. Pens returned to their cases.
Tae Kook stood carefully, glancing at Han Soo Min. "…We'll continue tomorrow," he said quietly.
She nodded. "…Yes. Tomorrow."
Ae Rin, crouched behind the doorframe, scribbled one final note:
"…Observation 100: Kooky's quiet life officially disrupted. Observation 101: Something… new is happening. Observation 102: This is only the beginning."
And as Tae Kook walked back toward his desk, his mind lingered on the small, quiet girl who had just sat beside him.
He didn't realize it yet, but his carefully controlled world was already shifting.
