Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Man Behind the Glass

The staircase to the third floor was unusually quiet.

Most academy students remained on the lower levels, attending their first lectures of the semester. Their voices echoed faintly from distant hallways, but the higher Aria climbed, the quieter the building became.

Her heels clicked softly against the marble steps.

Measured.

Unhurried.

The small envelope rested inside her bag, but she could still feel the weight of it like a silent question.

Observation Room — 3rd Floor.

Private Discussion Invitation.

No name.

No explanation.

But Aria didn't need one.

Her instincts had already pieced together the answer.

There was only one person powerful enough to arrange something like this within hours of her first appearance at the academy.

Which meant the man she had only glimpsed yesterday was now actively seeking her out.

The thought should have made her cautious.

It did.

But it also made her curious.

At the top of the staircase, a long corridor stretched ahead.

Tall windows lined one side, revealing the academy courtyard far below. The opposite wall held a series of private conference rooms used by investors and visiting executives.

Most of the doors were closed.

Only one stood slightly open.

A small silver plaque beside it read:

Observation Lounge

Aria stopped a few steps away.

Her heart remained steady.

But her senses sharpened.

This moment felt strangely familiar.

In her previous life, she had often stood outside closed doors while powerful men discussed business inside.

Waiting.

Listening.

Learning.

Except back then she had never been invited in.

Now she was.

She stepped forward and pushed the door open.

The room beyond was quiet.

Large.

Minimalist.

Floor-to-ceiling glass windows stretched across the far wall, offering a perfect view of the academy grounds below.

And standing near those windows—

Was him.

He didn't turn immediately.

His tall figure remained facing the window, one hand resting casually in his pocket.

The morning light cast a faint glow along the sharp lines of his dark suit.

For several seconds, neither of them spoke.

Aria stepped inside and closed the door quietly behind her.

The sound finally made him turn.

Up close, his presence was even more striking than it had appeared from a distance.

Tall.

Composed.

His dark eyes studied her with calm intensity, as if examining a puzzle piece that didn't quite fit the expected picture.

"Miss Valen."

His voice was low.

Smooth.

Not cold, but controlled.

Aria met his gaze.

"You invited me."

It wasn't a question.

His lips curved slightly.

"I did."

Silence stretched briefly between them.

Aria noticed something important immediately.

He wasn't rushing to speak.

He was waiting.

Observing how she would react.

A quiet test.

So she gave him nothing unnecessary.

"What do you want to discuss?" she asked calmly.

His eyebrow lifted slightly.

Most academy students would have started with nervous introductions.

Or enthusiastic gratitude for the invitation.

She skipped all of that.

Interesting.

"I was curious," he said simply.

"About?"

"You."

The honesty of the answer hung in the air.

Aria didn't look surprised.

But inside, her mind sharpened further.

Men like him rarely admitted curiosity openly.

Which meant he was either extremely confident…

Or deliberately provoking a reaction.

She chose her response carefully.

"I'm not sure I'm very interesting."

His gaze didn't shift.

"That's not what your evaluation results suggest."

Aria's fingers tightened slightly around the strap of her bag.

So that was how quickly he had investigated her.

Fast.

Efficient.

Dangerous.

"You reviewed academy records?" she asked.

"I review many things."

He walked slowly toward the long table in the center of the room.

His movements were relaxed but purposeful.

Then he leaned lightly against the edge.

"Your strategic simulation."

Aria remained where she stood.

"Yes?"

"Your decisions were unusually aggressive."

"Crisis situations often require aggressive solutions."

"That's true."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"But most people your age avoid that kind of risk."

Aria tilted her head faintly.

"Perhaps I think differently."

He studied her face for several seconds.

As if searching for something beneath her calm expression.

"Perhaps," he said.

The quiet tension between them thickened slightly.

Two strategists silently measuring each other.

Finally, Aria spoke again.

"You went through the trouble of arranging this meeting to ask about a simulation?"

His lips curved again.

"Partially."

"And the other reason?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into the inside pocket of his jacket and removed a small tablet.

With a few taps, he turned the screen toward her.

A familiar page appeared.

Her academy profile.

Along with detailed notes.

"You showed almost no interest in business until recently," he said.

Aria glanced at the screen.

Then back at him.

"People change."

"That quickly?"

"Sometimes."

His gaze sharpened.

"What caused the change?"

The question landed like a blade wrapped in velvet.

Aria's mind moved quickly.

She couldn't tell him the truth.

That she had already lived through the destruction of her life.

That she had returned to the past with revenge burning in her chest.

So she gave him something close enough to truth.

"Perspective."

He waited.

But she didn't elaborate.

Which made him smile faintly again.

"You're careful with your words."

"I try to be."

Another silence followed.

Then he asked the question that had been quietly forming since the moment he saw her.

"Tell me something, Miss Valen."

"Yes?"

"If you had complete control of a corporation like Valen Industries…"

His voice lowered slightly.

"What would you change first?"

Aria didn't hesitate.

"Leadership structure."

That answer caught his attention instantly.

"Explain."

"The company relies too heavily on centralized authority," she said calmly.

"Which creates strategic bottlenecks."

His eyes darkened slightly.

"You've studied your father's company closely."

"I've observed it."

He leaned back slightly.

"And what would you do about those bottlenecks?"

Aria held his gaze.

"I'd remove them."

The simplicity of the answer carried a quiet ruthlessness.

For a moment, the room was completely silent.

Then he laughed softly.

Not mockingly.

But with genuine amusement.

"You're an interesting person, Miss Valen."

Aria crossed her arms lightly.

"Is that why you summoned me here?"

"No."

His eyes held hers steadily.

"I invited you because I believe you're hiding something."

The words were direct.

Sharp.

But Aria didn't flinch.

Instead she asked calmly,

"Everyone hides something."

His smile faded slightly.

"That's true."

He straightened from the table.

Then he walked toward the window again.

Looking down at the academy courtyard.

"I enjoy observing potential."

Aria remained silent.

"And right now," he continued,

"You're the most unusual candidate in this academy."

He turned back toward her.

His eyes held a faint glimmer of intrigue.

"Which makes me wonder."

Aria raised an eyebrow.

"Wonder what?"

His voice lowered slightly.

"What someone like you is really planning."

The question lingered between them.

Aria didn't answer immediately.

Because in that moment she realized something important.

This man was far more dangerous than she expected.

Not because of his wealth.

Not because of his influence.

But because he saw too much.

Finally, she gave a small, calm smile.

"Planning?"

"Yes."

"I'm planning to become powerful."

Her honesty surprised him.

Then she added quietly,

"Isn't that the point of being here?"

His dark eyes held hers for a long moment.

Then he smiled again.

Slowly.

As if he had just discovered something very entertaining.

"Yes," he said.

"Exactly."

And in that moment

Both of them realized something neither had expected.

They weren't simply having a conversation.

They were beginning a game.
