Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 – The  Countdown

The warehouse had grown quieter over the last few hours.

Not because the fear had disappeared.

But because the children were slowly realizing that crying loudly only attracted the attention of the kidnappers.

Dim light from old hanging bulbs flickered across the cracked concrete floor. The air smelled of rust, oil, and stale dust.

Some students sat with their backs against the cold walls.

Others whispered quietly in small groups.

A few simply stared blankly ahead, still trying to understand how a normal school trip had turned into this nightmare.

Noah sat beside Alex and Zara.

He kept scanning the room, counting the kidnappers, watching their movements.

Three guards.

Two near the main entrance.

One sitting near a table with a rifle across his lap.

Every few minutes one of them checked their phones.

Noah noticed everything.

Because observation was the only weapon they had.

The First Outburst

One of the younger students suddenly spoke loudly.

"I can't eat this again."

The boy held up the plastic food container.

"Rice again?"

Several students turned toward him nervously.

One girl whispered urgently.

"Be quiet."

But the boy continued complaining.

"I want chicken."

"Or some other food."

His voice echoed across the room.

One of the kidnappers slowly stood up.

He walked toward the boy.

The entire room went silent.

The kidnapper stopped in front of him and leaned closer.

Then he mimicked the boy's voice in a childish tone.

"I want chicken."

"I want something else."

The other kidnappers chuckled.

Then the man's face suddenly hardened.

"If you don't like the food…"

He leaned closer.

"Don't eat it."

The boy immediately lowered his head.

The kidnapper tossed the container back onto the floor and walked away.

The room fell silent again.

Fear had returned.

Gentle Jack's Decision

From the upper platform of the warehouse, Gentle Jack had watched everything.

He turned to one of his men.

"Fear is fading."

The man frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"They're starting to talk."

"That's dangerous."

Gentle Jack walked slowly down the metal stairs.

His boots echoed loudly in the empty space.

Every student immediately looked up.

When he reached the center of the room, he spoke calmly.

"Stand up."

Nobody moved.

Then one of the kidnappers raised his rifle.

"STAND UP!"

The students quickly obeyed.

Gentle Jack looked across their frightened faces.

Then his eyes stopped on Zara.

"The mayor's daughter."

Zara felt her stomach twist.

"Come here."

Noah stepped slightly forward.

But Alex grabbed his arm.

"Don't," she whispered.

Zara slowly walked toward Gentle Jack.

Her legs felt heavy.

Her heart pounded loudly in her chest.

Gentle Jack handed her a folded paper.

"You know what to do."

She looked down at the paper.

Another script.

Her hands trembled.

The DemonstrationJust before they started recording, one of the kidnappers suddenly grabbed Noah.

"Bring that boy."

The room erupted in panic.

Noah tried to pull away but two men held his arms.

They dragged him forward.

Alex began crying.

"Noah!"

One kidnapper slapped her across the face.

"Quiet!"

Gentle Jack spoke calmly.

"Relax."

"This is only a demonstration."

One of the kidnappers pulled out a cutlass.

The blade glinted under the weak warehouse light.

Gasps filled the room.

The man grabbed Noah's hand and forced it onto a wooden crate.

"Please!" Alex cried.

"Don't hurt him!"

Several students began begging.

"Please!"

"Please stop!"

The kidnapper raised the cutlass high.

Zara covered her mouth.

Noah closed his eyes.

The blade came down fast.

CLANG!

The blade struck the wooden crate beside Noah's fingers.

Students screamed.

The kidnapper slowly lifted the blade again.

He leaned close to Noah's face.

"Next time…"

"I won't miss."

They pushed Noah back toward the group.

His hands were shaking.

But his fingers were still intact.

Gentle Jack nodded.

"Good."

"Now let's record the message."

Zara's MessageThe camera light turned on.

Zara stood in front of it again.

Her voice trembled slightly as she read.

"Mr. Mayor…"

"Your time is running out."

The warehouse was silent.

"You now have less than 48 hours to step down from the election."

"If you refuse…"

She paused.

Gentle Jack's voice came from behind the camera.

"Continue."

"If you refuse…"

"The students will be punished one by one."

Gentle Jack stepped into frame.

His expression was calm.

"You saw what almost happened to the boy."

"Next time…"

He looked directly at the camera.

"…we won't miss."

The video ended.

The Mayor WatchesInside the mayor's residence, the room was full of political advisors and security officials.

Everyone watched the video in silence.

When the screen went black, the mayor slowly sat down.

His face looked pale.

"They almost cut that boy's hand."

The PA remained calm.

"It was only intimidation."

"But what if next time they don't stop?"

The PA leaned closer.

"Sir, this operation is under control."

The mayor shook his head slowly.

"You said no children would be hurt."

"They won't be."

The mayor stared at the screen again.

But now his confidence had begun to crack.

Sadiq Builds the CaseAt police headquarters, Inspector Sadiq Bello watched the same video.

He replayed the moment with the cutlass three times.

"Pause it."

The technician froze the frame.

Sadiq pointed at the background.

"Zoom there."

The image sharpened slightly.

A broken metal beam.

Cracked walls.

Industrial structure.

"This is definitely a warehouse," one officer said.

Sadiq nodded.

"But which one?"

Arendale had dozens of abandoned factories.

But the beam structure looked familiar.

Sadiq turned toward his team.

"Pull up every abandoned warehouse within a fifty-mile radius of the kidnapped site."

"Yes sir."

The room filled with the sound of typing keyboards.

Sadiq crossed his arms.

"We're getting closer."

Inside the WarehouseBack at the hideout, the students had returned to sitting on the floor.

Alex quietly cleaned the tear on Noah's sleeve.

"I thought they were going to cut your hand."

Noah forced a weak smile.

"They didn't."

"But next time…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

Zara sat beside them silently.

Her hands still trembled from reading the message.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"For what?" Noah asked.

"For being the reason they kidnapped everyone."

Noah shook his head.

"That's not your fault."

Alex nodded.

"They planned this."

The three of them looked around the room.

Fear was everywhere.

But so was something else now.

Anger.

Gentle Jack's ConfidenceUpstairs, Gentle Jack reviewed the video recording.

One of his men approached.

"The mayor will panic now."

Jack smiled slightly.

"Yes."

"Politicians care more about power than anything."

"But when their family is involved…"

"They become predictable."

He closed the laptop.

"Prepare the next step."

"What is it?"

Jack looked toward the students below.

"We wait."

Sadiq's BreakthroughHours later at headquarters, one of the analysts suddenly spoke.

"Sir!"

Sadiq looked up.

"What is it?"

"We matched the warehouse beam from the video."

The room went silent.

"Where?"

The analyst pointed at the screen.

"Old Riverton Industrial Zone."

Sadiq leaned closer.

That area had been abandoned for years.

Dozens of empty buildings.

Perfect for hiding people.

He grabbed his coat.

"Get the team ready."

"Tonight we start searching."

The investigation was finally moving.

And somewhere in the dark industrial district of the city…

Twenty frightened students waited.

Unaware that help might finally be getting closer.
