Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Hearth Against the Void

The ballroom transformed into a frigid abyss. Grand Duchess Malacor stood at the center of a swirling vortex of shadow, her emerald robes turning as black as charred wood. The Void-Siphon Amulet wasn't just draining mana anymore; it was eating the heat from the room. Frost crept across the golden plates, and the King's breath came in white plumes of mist.

"Silas, my focus is freezing!" Elara cried, her hands trembling as her crystal began to crack under the unnatural cold. "I can't light a spark in this darkness!"

Silas felt the cold sinking into his bones, but he stood his ground. He knew this feeling—the bone-deep exhaustion of a walk-in freezer during a rush, the numbing cold that makes you want to quit. But he also knew the cure.

"The Anchor Loaf!" Silas shouted, pointing to the massive, glowing bread he had presented to the King. "It didn't just store mana, Elara—it stored the Solar Beacon's heat! It's a thermal battery!"

[Objective: Ignite the Anchor Loaf to dispel the Void]

[Requirement: Precise Convection channeling]

The Duchess screamed, a sound like tearing metal, and sent a bolt of shadow toward the throne. Silas didn't have a shield, but he had a heavy, iron-wood rolling pin. He swung, not to hit the bolt, but to intercept the tray of "Midnight Croissants." He batted a shimmering pastry into the path of the shadow.

When the void-magic hit the mana-infused croissant, the reaction was explosive. The "Cloud-Wheat" inside the pastry expanded instantly, creating a localized puff of white light that neutralized the shadow bolt.

"The kitchen isn't just for cooking, Malacor!" Silas yelled, sliding across the frost-slicked floor toward the Anchor Loaf. "It's about controlling the environment!"

He reached the loaf. It was humming, vibrating with the trapped energy of the sun. He didn't have a sword to break it open, but he had his "Baking System" interface.

[Skill Activation: Crust-Breaker]

[Targeting: Deep Core Release]

Silas slammed his fist into the center of the jagged, dark crust. In his old life, this would have broken his hand. Here, with the "Battle-Baker" stats he had earned, his strike hit with the force of a hammer.

The crust shattered.

A pillar of pure, golden radiance erupted from the bread. It wasn't just light; it was heat. It was the concentrated essence of a thousand summer days in the Whispering Woods, purified through the fermentation process. The "Aroma of Sanctuary" intensified, becoming a physical barrier of golden mist that pushed the shadows back.

The Duchess shrieked as the golden heat hit her. The Void-Siphon Amulet began to glow white-hot, unable to contain the sheer, wholesome energy of the "Great Bake."

"Too much... too much sweetness!" she gasped, her shadow-form flickering.

"That's the secret of a good meal," Silas said, stepping through the golden light, his face illuminated by the hearth-fire. "It's too much for someone who only wants to take. A baker's magic is meant to be shared."

With a final crack, the amulet shattered. The shadow vortex collapsed, and Malacor fell to the floor, her emerald robes dull and torn. The candles in the ballroom flickered back to life, and the warmth returned so suddenly that the frost turned to a gentle, cleansing mist.

[Unlock: The Ever-Warm Oven]

The King stood up, his eyes bright with a new strength. He looked at the shattered remains of the Duchess's amulet, then at Silas, who was standing over a pile of glowing breadcrumbs.

"Master Silas," the King said, his voice ringing through the silent hall. "You have saved my life, my castle, and perhaps the soul of Aethelgard. A bakery seems too small a reward for a man of your talents."

Silas wiped the soot from his forehead and looked at Elara, who was beaming with pride. "With all due respect, Your Majesty... I like my bakery. But I think I'm going to need a few more employees. We have a lot of hungry people to feed."
