LIORA POV
The power was eating her alive from the inside out.
Liora couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Couldn't do anything except burn. Every cell in her body was on fire. Every nerve was screaming. Her consciousness was shattering into a thousand pieces like glass hitting stone.
Then it started to fade.
The burning lessened. The pressure in her skull eased. Her mind stopped spinning long enough for her to remember how to breathe. The violet light in her eyes dimmed until she could see the ritual chamber again.
The guards were coming.
She could see them through the haze. Three warriors with weapons. Fury in their eyes. Death in their approach.
Liora tried to move backward but her legs wouldn't obey her. The power had drained everything. She was empty and helpless and about to die.
Then the black wolf appeared.
It was massive. Larger than any wolf should be able to grow. Its fur was the color of midnight itself. Its eyes remained silver even in wolf form. When it moved, it moved like thunder given shape.
It stood between her and the guards.
The warriors stopped in their tracks.
Even in their rage, even with Marcus screaming orders at them, they recognized predator when they saw it. This was something that would kill them without hesitation. This was something that belonged at the top of the hierarchy.
The wolf shifted.
Bones cracked and reformed. Muscles restructured. The transformation was violent and beautiful and impossible to look away from. When the human form emerged, Liora's breath stopped.
He was enormous.
Taller than any male she had ever seen. His skin was dark and carved with ritual scars that glowed white in the torch light. His body was pure muscle and power and controlled violence. His eyes were silver. Not pale yellow like most Alphas. But pure silver like frozen metal. Like looking at a blade.
And when he looked at her, he looked at her like she was precious.
Like she mattered.
Like she was worth standing between her and death.
His voice came out in pure command.
I claim her as mate.
Liora's mind went blank.
Mate. He had just claimed her as his mate. Before the entire ritual chamber. Before every Alpha in three territories. Before the laws that governed their world.
She didn't know his name.
She had never spoken to him. Had only seen him for a few seconds before the stone exploded. Had only felt that moment of connection that made no sense and changed everything.
And he had just claimed her as his mate.
Ancient law protected bonded females. No wolf could harm someone claimed by an Alpha without facing that Alpha's challenge. She was safe. Suddenly, impossibly, she was safe.
But the freedom lasted less than a heartbeat.
Marcus was screaming.
The Alpha of Silvercrest was on his feet, his face purple with rage. His voice shook the entire chamber with its fury.
This is forbidden. She is an abomination. She will destroy us all. No law can protect something like her. No claiming can make her acceptable. She must be executed. The council will vote. The council will decide her fate.
Other Alphas were nodding. Liora could see it happening. Could see them agreeing. Could see them deciding her death even as this stranger stood between her and immediate harm.
The stranger's voice cut through Marcus's screaming.
Do not touch her. She is under my protection now. Any wolf that comes near her answers to me.
His hand reached out and took hers.
His grip was strong. Warm. Real. Something solid to hold onto while the world continued to fracture around them. Liora looked up at his face and saw determination there. Absolute commitment. The kind of strength that came from someone who had never questioned whether they could do what they needed to do.
He was going to protect her.
He didn't know her. He didn't know anything about her. But he was going to protect her anyway.
The ritual chamber was dissolving into chaos.
Warriors were choosing sides. Some moved toward the stranger's position. Others stayed with Marcus. The other Alphas were whispering to each other, calculating which alliance was safest. The elders were conferring in low voices.
Liora looked down at her hands gripping the stranger's. Her fingers were shaking.
She had been invisible her entire life.
Servants looked past her. Warriors took advantage of her. The pack had forgotten she existed the moment her father decided not to claim her publicly.
And now everyone was staring at her.
Every eye in the ritual chamber was on her. Every Alpha recognized what she was. Every warrior understood that she was a threat. Every person here had just registered that she was different. Powerful. Impossible.
She was the most visible and hunted thing in this entire room.
The stranger squeezed her hand gently and she looked up at his silver eyes.
His mouth moved but she couldn't hear the words. There was too much noise. Too much chaos. Too much fear flooding through her body.
Marcus was moving toward them.
The Alpha had blood on his shoulder from his fight with the stranger but he was moving anyway. His yellow eyes were fixed on Liora with an intensity that made her understand something deep in her bones.
He wanted her dead.
Not because of justice. Not because of law. But because he recognized her as a threat to his power. She had commanded Alphas. She had shown that the natural hierarchy was a lie. She had revealed that someone with nothing could become someone with everything.
That was unforgivable.
The stranger's arm wrapped around her waist.
He pulled her close to his body. His other hand was already reaching for a weapon. His entire stance had changed. He had gone from protective to lethal. His silver eyes tracked Marcus's movements like a predator tracking prey.
He was ready to fight.
Ready to kill.
Ready to die defending someone he had just met.
One of the guards stepped forward again.
The stranger's voice cracked out like a whip.
Stand down. The next wolf that moves toward her dies by my hand. This is not a threat. This is a promise.
The guard hesitated.
But Marcus was still coming.
The Alpha of Silvercrest had tasted blood in his fight with the stranger. He had experienced defeat and humiliation in front of his entire pack. His pride was shattered. His control was slipping.
He was dangerous in a way that went beyond tactics now.
He was dangerous because he had nothing left to lose.
The stranger moved.
He shifted his position to keep Liora behind him. He was putting himself in the line of attack. He was making himself the barrier between her and harm.
Marcus was almost to them when Vex appeared.
The second-in-command of Shadowpeak Pack stepped between the stranger and Marcus with weapons drawn. His face was deadly calm. His movements were practiced and precise.
Stand down, Alpha Thornhide. Unless you want another war between our packs tonight.
The ritual chamber went completely still.
The implication hung in the air like a blade suspended above their heads. One more attack. One more step forward. And Shadowpeak Pack would declare war on Silvercrest Pack. Here. Tonight. In the ritual chamber itself.
Marcus stopped.
His breathing was heavy. His wounds were bleeding. His power was pushing at the edges of Liora's fading command, trying to break free completely.
His yellow eyes locked onto hers one more time.
And Liora saw something there that terrified her more than his rage.
Purpose.
Calculation.
A plan that was already forming in his mind.
He wasn't going to attack her now. He was going to wait. He was going to gather allies. He was going to build his case.
And then he was going to have her executed legally.
The stranger pulled her toward the chamber entrance.
Vex and the other Shadowpeak warriors formed a protective circle around them. The other Alphas didn't try to stop them. They just watched. Calculated. Decided which side to join in the war that was coming.
Because Marcus was right.
There would be a war. Not tonight. But soon. And it would be because of Liora and the power she carried and the fact that she had proven the entire hierarchy was a lie.
The stranger pulled her out of the ritual chamber and into the cold night air.
The moon was enormous above them. The stars were watching. The mountain held its breath.
He stopped once they were away from the chamber entrance and turned to face her.
His silver eyes searched her violet ones.
What is your name? he asked. His voice was steady. His grip on her hand was sure.
Liora. Her voice was barely a whisper. I don't know your name.
He leaned down until his forehead was almost touching hers.
Kael Nightstorm. Alpha heir of Shadowpeak Pack. And as of three minutes ago, your mate.
He said it like it was a promise he intended to keep no matter what came next.
Vex appeared beside them.
We need to leave. Now. Marcus is already planning his move. The council will vote for execution within days. We have to get you somewhere safe.
Kael didn't look away from Liora's face.
Safe doesn't exist for us anymore. But we can try.
He took her hand again and pulled her toward the horses waiting at the base of the mountain.
Behind them, the ritual chamber erupted into shouting.
The sacred ceremony was over.
The war was beginning.
And Liora was going to be at the center of all of it.
