Chapter 1 - The flow of mana

In this world, mana flows through every living creature and drifts quietly in the air around us. It is the invisible energy that connects all life, present in plants, animals, people, and even the smallest insects. Most beings go through their entire lives without ever noticing mana or learning how to control it, but a full thirty percent of the population understands its existence and knows at least the basics of working with it.

To begin using mana, a person must first open their meridians. These meridians are like hidden channels running throughout the body, similar to veins but meant for energy instead of blood. When the meridians remain closed, mana cannot enter or move freely inside the person, so they stay cut off from the ambient mana that surrounds everything. Opening the meridians usually happens through focused training, meditation, breathing exercises, or sometimes sudden insight during a moment of danger or extreme emotion. Once the meridians open, the individual can draw in the mana that floats in the air. The body takes this ambient mana, refines it, and turns it into personal mana that belongs only to that person. This personal mana then spreads out and settles into every part of the body—muscles, bones, organs, skin, even the blood itself. Over time, the constant presence of mana strengthens and heals the body, making it more resistant to disease, injury, and fatigue. People who regularly absorb and circulate mana often live longer, recover faster from wounds, and maintain youthful vitality well into old age.

Four fundamental techniques form the foundation that nearly every mana user learns after opening their meridians. The first and simplest is called Guard. Almost everyone starts here because it provides immediate protection. To use Guard, the person gathers their mana and spreads it evenly across the surface of their body, creating a thin but solid layer that acts like invisible armor. This mana coating blocks basic attacks made from mana, weakens incoming spells or energy blasts, and prevents another person's mana from easily invading their own body. Guard does not stop physical weapons like swords or arrows completely, but it reduces the damage they cause by absorbing part of the force. Beginners practice Guard until they can maintain it for minutes or even hours without tiring, and experienced users can activate it instantly in response to danger.

The second basic technique is Surge. Surge works in the opposite direction from Guard. Instead of keeping mana close to the body, the user pushes their mana outward in a sudden, forceful burst. The released mana spreads out like a shockwave, carrying the full weight of the user's power and intent. A strong Surge can knock weaker opponents off balance, pin them in place with overwhelming pressure, or simply make them feel crushed under an invisible weight. Surge also serves as a tool for intimidation; even those who cannot see mana feel the raw presence when a powerful person unleashes it. The technique requires control because too much Surge wastes mana quickly, while too little produces only a faint ripple that accomplishes nothing.

The third technique, Conceal, stands directly opposite to Surge. Conceal involves pulling mana inward and compressing it so tightly that almost none leaks out into the surroundings. The user's presence fades until it becomes nearly impossible for others to detect them through mana sense alone. Skilled users can walk through crowded areas without anyone noticing their strength, hide in plain sight during ambushes, or approach enemies undetected. Conceal demands precise control and calm focus; any spike of emotion or sudden movement can cause mana to flare and reveal the user. Masters of Conceal can reduce their signature so completely that even powerful opponents pass them by without suspicion.

The fourth and most personal basic technique is Manifest. Manifest allows the user to shape their mana into unique forms and abilities that reflect their individual nature, experiences, and affinities. Affinities vary widely—some people naturally lean toward fire, water, wind, earth, light, darkness, or other elements, while others develop affinities based on concepts like speed, strength, healing, illusion, or binding. When a person Manifests, they mold their mana into something specific: a blade of flame that follows their will, a shield of hardened air, tendrils that grab and restrain, or even temporary constructs like ropes, walls, or projectiles. The possibilities depend entirely on the user's imagination, training, and the strength of their affinity. Manifest separates ordinary users from those who develop true mastery because it turns raw mana into something creative and distinctive.

Beyond these four foundational techniques, several advanced methods exist that build on the basics and require greater skill, larger mana reserves, and deeper understanding.

Spirit Vision comes first among the advanced techniques. The user channels mana directly to their eyes, coating the lenses and retinas with a thin layer of energy. This coating sharpens perception and reveals things hidden from ordinary sight. With Spirit Vision active, a person can see the flow of mana in the air, trace the meridians inside another person's body, detect concealed individuals, spot weak points in defenses, or identify illusions and disguised objects. The technique strains the eyes if overused, so users learn to activate it only when necessary and deactivate it quickly.

Spirit Sense extends the idea of spreading mana outward, but instead of a single explosive wave like Surge, it creates a steady, controlled field. The user sends mana out in all directions, letting it brush against everything nearby and return with information. Spirit Sense maps the surroundings, locates living beings by their mana signatures, tracks movement, detects traps or hidden objects, and provides a three-dimensional awareness of the environment. The range and clarity depend on the user's skill and mana capacity; beginners might sense only a few meters around themselves, while experts can cover entire battlefields or scan distant forests.

Suppress targets another person's mana directly. The user projects their own mana into the opponent's body or aura, overwhelming and locking down the target's energy flow. When successful, the suppressed person cannot open their meridians fully, activate techniques, or even maintain Guard. Their mana becomes sluggish and unresponsive. Suppress works reliably only when the user holds a significant power advantage or exploits specific conditions, such as catching the target off guard, striking during a moment of weakness, or using specialized tools or formations. Against equals or stronger opponents, Suppress usually fails completely.

Coat applies mana to external objects rather than the body. The user wraps their mana around a weapon, tool, armor, or even a simple stick, infusing it with energy that enhances every aspect of the object. A coated sword cuts deeper, holds its edge longer, and withstands heavier impacts. Coated armor becomes tougher without adding weight. Coated arrows fly straighter and strike harder. The improvement scales with the amount and quality of mana used, and skilled users can maintain the coating for extended periods during combat.

Interact stands apart from the others because it reaches beyond the material world. The user extends their mana into other planes of existence—spiritual realms, elemental domains, shadow planes, or ethereal layers that ordinary people cannot touch. Interact allows communication with spirits, summoning minor entities, drawing power from distant sources, or even stepping partially into another plane for brief moments. This technique carries risks because other planes hold their own dangers, and careless interaction can invite unwanted attention or cause backlash that harms the user.

Together, these techniques—basic and advanced—form the complete system through which people harness mana. Every user begins with the same four foundations and gradually adds more complex methods as their power grows. Mana shapes their lives, their battles, and their understanding of the world itself.
