Chapter 6 - Chapter 5: The Phantom Wake

The red spotlights of the Peacekeeper patrol boats sliced through the mist like burning lances.

Behind Kai, their engines roared through the canals, deep, mechanical thunder that echoed between the drowned buildings of the Ruined District.

The sound of inevitability.

"Kai, they're locking on!" Nyx's voice snapped through the comms, sharp with panic. Static crackled around her words.

"I've got three patrol signatures closing in at intercept velocity!"

Kai leaned lower over the Switchblade's handlebars, wind and spray striking his face like cold needles.

"If they tag your turbine signature," Nyx continued, "they'll cross-reference your biometrics. You'll be back in the Cooler before the sun comes up!"

Kai's knuckles turned white inside his gloves.

The Kinetic Overdrive still thrummed through his body like a second heartbeat. His teeth rattled from the residual energy, adrenaline flooding every nerve.

"Not today," he muttered.

The System interface flooded into his vision.

Four unspent Skill Points pulsed like embers in the dark.

His instinct moved faster than thought.

Phantom Drift.

He activated it.

The sensation hit immediately.

Cold.

Violent.

Agonizing.

The burning heat of Overdrive vanished, replaced by an icy numbness that spread through his veins. It felt like his blood had suddenly turned to slush.

The Switchblade's turbine changed pitch.

Instead of roaring, it dropped into a hollow, ghostlike whistle.

Nyx gasped over the comms.

"Kai… what just happened?"

Her voice trembled.

"You're,..your signal is fracturing!"

Kai barely heard her.

The canal twisted ahead, but the world around him seemed to slow.

He leaned the Switchblade into a brutal ninety-degree bank.

To the Peacekeeper sensors, Kai didn't turn.

He desynchronized.

His machine blurred across the water, leaving behind a shimmering afterimage, a perfect duplicate energy signature rippling across the canal.

A Phantom Wake.

From the patrol boats' perspective, Kai was still racing straight ahead.

The lead Peacekeeper pilot slammed his throttle forward.

"Target locked! Maintain pursuit!"

The patrol boats surged forward,

Straight toward the illusion.

Too late.

The phantom wake carried them into the graveyard of submerged transit buses half-hidden beneath the murky water.

The lead boat struck first.

Metal screamed.

The second smashed into the wreckage seconds later.

Water exploded skyward in a violent geyser of foam and twisted steel.

The third boat swerved desperately, scraping against a drowned concrete pillar before spinning out.

Back in the side canal, Kai slowed slightly.

His chest rose and fell in ragged breaths.

"I'm clear, Nyx," he rasped.

"What did you do?!" she demanded.

Kai wiped sweat from his brow.

"New trick."

Nyx groaned loudly.

"Remind me never to race you."

Ten minutes later, the sirens were fading echoes in the distance.

Kai drifted toward Alpha Station.

The fortified pier rose from the water like a steel fortress at the edge of the ruined city.

Floodlights illuminated the platform in pale white beams.

Kai guided the Switchblade onto the dock.

The engine ticked as it cooled.

When he tried to stand, his legs almost buckled.

The Phantom Drift had drained him completely.

He grabbed the seat to steady himself.

It felt like the System had borrowed something from him, something deeper than energy.

Like it had taken a piece of his soul.

Vector waited at the edge of the pier.

Its orange-and-white chassis stood motionless against the bruised grey sky.

The machine's single blue optic pulsed calmly.

"Well done, racer," Vector said.

Kai rubbed the back of his neck.

"Those Peacekeepers didn't seem very impressed."

Vector tilted its head slightly.

"The opinions of municipal enforcers are irrelevant to the logic of the grid."

Its optic flashed.

"Efficiency is the only metric that matters."

A golden hologram appeared between them.

Kai's eyes widened slightly.

RAG BOWL INVITATIONAL

Vector's voice echoed with mechanical precision.

"I have granted you access to this weekend's Rag Bowl Invitational."

Kai let out a quiet whistle.

"I've heard of that race."

"Yes," Vector replied.

"It is the most prestigious event in the lower sectors."

A pause.

"And the most dangerous."

Kai folded his arms, studying the invitation.

"What's the catch?"

Vector's optic brightened.

"Survive."

The Rag Bowl – Part 1

Storm clouds swallowed the sky over the deep ruins.

The air had turned electric, thick with the promise of lightning.

The skyline leaned like broken teeth over the flooded district.

This was the Rag Bowl.

No fountains.

No polished marble.

Only scrap metal, collapsing bridges, and racers desperate enough to risk their lives for reputation.

Drones hovered everywhere.

Hundreds of them.

Their lights blinked in the dark like mechanical stars.

Other Switchblades waited at the starting grid.

Their machines were brutal, painted with shark teeth, neon scars, and jagged armor plating.

Predators.

One rider glanced at Kai and slowly dragged a finger across his throat.

Kai didn't react.

Nyx's voice whispered through the comms.

"Kai… I really don't like this place."

Kai tightened his grip on the handlebars.

"That means we're in the right place."

The System appeared.

[EVENT: RAG BOWL INVITATIONAL – PART 1]

[RANK: F-CLASS – SQUID (PROGRESS: 85%)]

The lights flashed.

Three.

Two.

One.

Green.

The racers exploded forward.

Kai didn't just drive.

He hunted.

The Switchblade screamed as Kinetic Overdrive pushed his heart rate to 180 BPM.

Water burst into towering sprays as the racers tore through the canal.

Kai hit the first industrial ramp.

The Switchblade launched twenty meters into the air.

"Watch this," he murmured.

He released the seat and stretched backward into a Superman, his body hovering horizontally behind the machine.

The spectator drones swarmed closer.

Kai snapped forward again.

Bar Hop.

His legs cleared the handlebars before he slammed back onto the seat.

The Switchblade struck the water with a violent crash.

Two racers surged ahead.

Kai accelerated toward a rusted crane arm hanging over the canal.

He launched again.

The world spun.

Backflip.

Then immediately,

Front Flip.

The G-force slammed into his chest, forcing the air from his lungs.

He landed ahead of both racers, spray exploding outward like shattered diamonds.

The final section of the course twisted beneath a collapsing bridge.

Chunks of concrete crashed into the canal.

Racers swerved wildly.

Kai leaned into the final turn.

Then, just before the finish line,

He kicked both legs outward to the right.

Can-Can.

The stunt carried him across the finish.

The System chimed like a cathedral bell.

[RESULT: 1ST PLACE]

Then another alert appeared.

[BIOMETRIC SYNC COMPLETE]

[RANK UP: E-CLASS – WAKE RIDER UNLOCKED]

[NEW ATTRIBUTE: TURBINE HARMONY]

Kai slowed the Switchblade.

Rain finally began to fall.

Cold droplets struck the water around him.

He looked down at his hands.

Faint blue light still shimmered across his gloves.

Nyx's voice came through the comms, breathless.

"…Kai."

"Yeah?"

"You just embarrassed half the Ruins."

Kai looked toward the distant skyline.

Beyond the drowned districts, the golden towers of the Upper City gleamed faintly through the storm clouds.

For the first time since his release from the Cooler…

They didn't feel impossibly far away.

Kai smiled quietly.

He wasn't just a ghost anymore.

He was becoming the storm.

And soon,

The Upper City would have no choice but to notice.
