Chapter 7: The Boy Who Dreams of Infinite Seas

The galley of the Astro Sunny smelled of roasted meat, fresh-baked bread, and the faint metallic tang of Sanji's experimental spice blend. Warm lantern light spilled across the long wooden table where the Straw Hats—and their newest passenger—sat in various states of exhaustion and contentment.

Kai sat at the far end, back to the wall, plate half-cleared. He ate slowly, methodically, listening more than speaking. The survivors they had rescued earlier huddled near Chopper, wrapped in blankets, still wide-eyed from the rescue. Luffy was already on his third helping, cheeks stuffed like a chipmunk, talking through a full mouth.

"—and then BAM! The big purple ship just folded like paper! Shishishi! We should do that again tomorrow!"

Nami pinched the bridge of her nose. "Luffy, we almost lost the ship twice today. We're not doing anything tomorrow except repairs and figuring out where the hell we even are."

Zoro leaned back, one arm draped over the back of the bench, sake cup balanced on his knee. "Speak for yourself. I'm training at dawn. Those drones cut too clean. I need sharper edges."

Sanji lit a fresh cigarette. "You'll train when I say you've eaten enough to not pass out mid-swing, moss-head."

Usopp waved a drumstick dramatically. "And I'm upgrading the rail-cannon! Did you see how many drones I took out? Legendary shots! The great Captain Usopp shall become the Sniper King of the Stars!"

Robin smiled faintly, turning a page in an ancient book she had salvaged from the debris. "The stars… an apt title. The Red Line's fracture has exposed entirely new currents. The world map is rewriting itself in real time."

Franky flexed both arms with a metallic whir. "SUPER! I'm already designing rift-compatible cola boosters! Give me two days and this ship'll jump dimensions like it's nothing!"

Brook strummed a soft chord on his violin. "Yohohoho! A song for new horizons! Though I have no eyes to see them… skull joke!"

Chopper giggled despite himself.

Jinbe sipped tea calmly. "The sea—no, the galaxy—has changed. We must adapt. Quickly."

All eyes gradually drifted toward the quiet newcomer at the table's end.

Luffy swallowed his latest bite and pointed a greasy finger at Kai. "Oi, Kai! You've been super quiet! Tell us something about you! Where're you from? How'd you get so strong?"

Kai set his fork down. Every head turned. He had known this moment was coming. He had rehearsed the answer a dozen times while treading water.

"I was born on a sky island no one remembers the name of," he said evenly. "Small place. White-white sea. Not much grows. Not much stays. My parents were scavengers—same as me. They died when I was nine. Wrong place during a storm. After that… it was just me."

He paused—just long enough for the silence to settle, but not long enough to invite pity.

"I learned to watch. To move quiet. To hit hard when I had to. Sky islands aren't kind to slow people. You either get stronger or you fall. I got stronger."

Nami's expression softened slightly. "Three years alone?"

"More or less," Kai said. "Newspapers washed up sometimes. Read about you lot. About the war at Marineford. About Dressrosa. About Wano. Seemed like… people could change things. If they were stubborn enough."

Luffy's grin widened. "You read about us? Cool! So you know I'm gonna be Pirate King!"

Kai met his eyes—level, honest. "I know you say that. A lot."

The table erupted in laughter. Even Zoro cracked a smirk.

Kai continued, quieter. "When the purple ships came… everything fell. Literally. I didn't have anywhere else to go. So I fought. And I ended up here."

No lies.

No truths that could unravel him.

Just enough to be believed.

Robin closed her book gently. "A survivor who reads the news and fights when cornered. You'll fit in better than you think."

Luffy slammed both hands on the table. "Then it's decided! Kai's nakama! We're gonna sail the stars and punch bad guys and eat tons of meat!"

Sanji slid another plate in front of Kai without asking. "Eat. You look like you've been living on dial scraps."

Kai accepted it with a small nod. "Thanks."

The meal stretched late. Stories flowed—Luffy recounting Gear 5 fights with wild gestures, Usopp exaggerating every shot, Nami complaining about navigation, Zoro challenging anyone to drink more. Kai listened. Answered when asked. Laughed quietly at the right moments.

When the lanterns dimmed and most of the crew drifted toward bunks, Kai slipped out to the deck alone.

The Galactic Line stretched endless above him—nebulae in colors he had no names for, stars brighter than any sky island night. The violet blockade still glowed in the distance like a bruise on the horizon.

He leaned on the railing.

A private notification surfaced:

[Hidden Quest Progress Update: Earn Straw Hat Trust – Phase 1]

[Time remaining: 68 hours 22 minutes]

[New contribution logged: Personal backstory shared (minimal disclosure, high credibility)]

[Trust progress: +12% (total: 72%)]

Kai exhaled slowly.

He had given them a past—small, believable, sad enough to earn sympathy but not dramatic enough to invite probing. He had kept the system buried so deep it might as well not exist.

Tomorrow would bring training. Repairs. Probably more drones.

He would contribute.

He would stay quiet.

He would survive.

Because the boy who dreamed of infinite seas had finally found a ship worth dreaming on.

And he wasn't about to lose it by opening his mouth at the wrong moment.
