Chapter 26 - The burden of a prodigy: From Vanilla’s POV

I take in the sight before me with a hitch of my breath. I immediately search for an elastic— or some kind of ribbon— anything.

Then my eyes land on some rubber band on the floor. Not the best for hair, but I'm desperate here.

Just I reach for it, his hand wraps around my wrist.

At his words, I realize that I look way more panicked than I'd like to admit.

''Calm down, goddamn it, I just missed how you used to take care of your appearance back then…'' his voice almost sounds worried. I cannot believe it.

Adam, The great Death God worried about a grieving person—

I'm not a person.

I'm a personality.

The though rings in my mind.

I snatch my wrist back and crouch down to take the rubber band.

It was dirty, damaging and it pulled at my hair in all the wrong ways as I folded it into a low ponytail. But anything is better than betraying him…

Even when death pulled us apart.

Even though my fait is a cruel joke.

Even though I'm immortal, so I'll never be able to meet him on the other side…

Then again, if I would die, I don't think my soul would go up, never able to join him.

Maybe that immortality isn't so bad after all.

He looked at me with something softer than pity, but my love for my beloved doesn't let me acknowledge it. I take Adam's hand and press on the needle of my watch at my hip with my index finger. Time slowed around us. Leyla looking at us innocently as always, Sara's robots froze mid fight.

It felt foreign to touch a man's hand after all those years, but I didn't really have a choice here.

I led him in front of the now invisible table and coat to rest my hand on them.

''Put your hand here and give thousands of tons of weight to the flat surface.''

At first, he was visibly confused, but he didn't question it and obeyed.

Perfect.

Now we just need to lead the giant robot towards us and it will be perfect.

I let go of his hand and let go of the needle of my watch.

Time went back at its usual pace as an explosion erupted behind us. Now, that is just great.

And then my eyes glide over to the blondie.

Innocent, pretty, and somehow cute… if being dumb was considered cute.

I walk over to her, hand on my hip as I force a grin at her.

''Do you like playing dress up?''

The blondie's eyes twinkle with excitement.

''I LOVE playing dress up!! Especially with pretty girls like you!!! I love your black eye and white pupil! And those black rings on the white part of your left black eye?! I'm obsessed—!!!''

I laugh nervously at that, but it ends into a cough.

You already know what I'm going to say…

Nobody told me that since him…

''The white part of the eye is actually called a sclera.''

I know, I'm an old record playing the same song again and again.

But last time I checked, some of us are obsessed with the same music for weeks, sometimes months…

And in my case, at least 5 millenniums.

I almost shudder at the mere thought…

It's been hard ever since to regain control. My mind was too weak to rival against Capricorn's or Silver's…

Poor Silver, she's probably one of, if not 'the one', who suffered most out of all of us.

I just wish we could all be free.

I clear my throat, my mind already drifting back at the task at hand.

I nod towards Sara in the alley with an amused smile.

''Anyways, I heard that the girl over there loves playing dress up.''

At my words, the girl almost lunges at Sara with excitement twinkling in her eyes.

Adam looks at me with an arched eyebrow, wondering what idea I have behind my head.

And I have to admit that I missed that look on him. Usually, Adam is almost more calculating than me somehow, always observing, thinking, reading people like opened books. It's always been quite rare, even for me, to see him with a confused look. And it feels so good every time. I don't want anyone to understand me. The only one who had that right is already six feet under.

What's the point of letting my guard down anymore?

No one will ever be able to make me feel as much as he did.

He was my love, my heart, my beloved…

My fists clench, I could already feel my blood boiling through my inexistant veins.

And she took him away.

I take at deep breath and lock my eyes onto the remote in Sara's pockets.

I hadn't realized that people were running around us this whole time, nor the fact that half of the city was destroyed.

Sara's intelligence often managed to surpass most creatures' powers, which is weird considering she's only 5 or 6. She's the only prodigy I wouldn't envy. Because unlike most prodigies that are adored and showed off by their parents, this one was seen as a curse. Her intelligence was considered as 'normal', so she took it in and started making her goal to capture Capricorn.

Why? Because Capricorn's The Greatest Hero, a pirate, and last but not least, The Sun Goddess.

By capturing her, you're basically showing off your strength and making sure to 'assert your dominance'.

And before you ask…

Yes, it's as cringey as it sounds.

''Do you need my help, angel~?''

Adam's gazing at me with that stupid grin I hate so much.

I glare at him and stubbornly cross my arms before smirking.

''No, but I do need your belt.

…

-What?''

I'm suddenly behind him to take off his belt, I wrap it around my forearm and run a nearby's building's wall towards Sara.

I can feel my heels threatening to break but I push on.

I push off the wall when I'm above her and land on my heels.

Before she could even notice me because of Leyla's distraction, I kick at the remote to send it flying back into the alley.

With a twist of my ankle, I quickly dash at it and catch it midair.

I'm panting as I lean against a wall. Even though I technically don't need air, it's been too long since I've done any kind of exercice. Call me lazy, I call that critical thinking.

I turn to the blondie and Sara to notice her scowling at me.

Now that's just great.

''Even though you have my remote, my babies still know who's their mother!!!'' She laughs hysterically while I'm just gazing at her through bored eyes.

I don't really know what's happening after that.

Robots corner me from all sides, but I don't let myself getting impressed.

They all have a basic structure. Most of them have a few flaws, but that doesn't make them any less impressive.

One second, I'm finally regaining my breath, the next, they all lunge at me.

If that kid thinks a few cans will beat me, then she really doesn't know her fellow inventors.

I take off my heels and wield them as weapons.

One robot comes at me from the back. I dodge and hit its screen with the back of my makeshift weapon.

I turn to wrap Adam's belt around of the robots' arm and yank onto it to get to use one of the lasers.

I use it against them.

Red, hot light melts some of them.

But just as I succeeded to take three down, a bigger one grabs my ankle and yanks on it, causing me to fall.

But I'm not giving up.

I may not be used to fight without powers, but I am used to be upset. And once those emotions explode, I see red.

Wheels fly, gears get thrown, lasers get used by me.

And once all do it is done? I'm collapsing on the floor while trying to catch my breath. We got rid of the small problems…

Now we needed to address the bigger one.

I stare ahead at the city, and my jaw drops. In fact, it wiggles, bounces, dodges, stumbles, and even grumbles.

That thing was so big it could store a good dozen of villages.

I gulp at the mere thought of needing to distract that thing for the next part of my plan…

And right next to me, Adam leans in with a smirk.

''You're sure you don't need my help~?''
