Chapter 431 - Chapter 430: Cut Off One Head, Two More Shall Take Its Place

What exactly qualified as a "massive" secret base?

Peter Parker had been inside S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. He knew what a two-hundred-meter-tall skyscraper full of spies felt like.

But this? This defied every known law of structural engineering. Hydra had hollowed out a cavern three hundred meters high and tens of kilometers wide, buried seven hundred meters directly beneath the streets of Budapest.

The architecture was a grotesque, fanatical mockery of American landmarks. A massive replica of the Statue of Liberty loomed in the distance, clutching a stone tentacle instead of a torch. A twisted version of Mount Rushmore was carved into the cavern wall, bearing the jagged, towering faces of the Red Skull, Heinrich Zemo, and Baron Strucker. Below, thousands of Hydra soldiers marched in perfectly synchronized formations across the floodlit concrete.

It looked exactly like a doomsday bunker designed by lunatics intending to burn the world down and rebuild it from the ashes.

Peter clung to the shadowed rock ceiling, his breath catching in his throat. How could a cavern this massive exist directly beneath a major European capital without S.H.I.E.L.D. satellites detecting the seismic void?

The statues, Peter realized.

Hydra had stolen the ancient Elder God idols from the subterranean Pantheon in Rome. They were using the dark relics to generate a mystical cloaking barrier. And since four statues had gone missing, there were likely at least four of these apocalyptic strongholds scattered across the globe.

Peter dropped from the ceiling on a thin line of webbing. He bypassed the sprawling barracks, heading straight for the colossal structure sitting on the cavern's central axis. It was an exact architectural replica of the Roman Pantheon.

"Let's see what you're hiding in the VIP lounge," Peter whispered to himself.

He slipped through the towering bronze doors. The interior was lined with marble statues of past Hydra leaders, all draped in Roman togas to deify themselves. Peter ignored them, his eyes locking onto the monolithic statue in the absolute center of the rotunda.

The knowledge bled directly into his mind, fed through his mystical connection to the Web of Fate.

Set. Tiamat. Leviathan.

He was an Elder God. Gaia had tried to erase him from history, twisting his legend into the myth of a seven-headed sea serpent. But his true form was a nine-headed demon god of unimaginable dark magic. Set wasn't just Hydra's namesake; he was their twisted deity.

A crushing wave of dark, mystical pressure slammed into Peter's chest.

His enhanced spider-sense flared a fraction of a second too late. The statue of Set didn't move, but the sheer, localized malice radiating from the stone blasted outward like a shockwave. Peter desperately backflipped out of the blast radius, but the kinetic disruption rippled across his stealth suit. His optical camouflage shorted out, leaving him entirely visible.

"Spider-Man."

A raspy, ancient voice echoed from the shadows of the temple entrance. Peter hit the marble floor in a combat crouch, his white lenses narrowing.

A frail, bald old man leaning heavily on a polished wooden cane shuffled into the light.

"I assumed Captain America would be the first to breach these walls," the old man wheezed, a thin smile stretching across his parchment-like skin. "You are quite the surprise. We haven't entertained a guest of your caliber since Richard Parker."

Peter flinched. The mention of his murdered father made his blood run instantly cold.

A full platoon of Hydra shock troopers flooded the temple entrance, raising advanced energy rifles and locking their laser sights onto Peter's chest.

Sparks flared violently in the center of the room. A jagged, rotating portal tore through the darkness. Steve Rogers and Logan stepped through the gateway, weapons drawn. A second later, a second portal opened. Tony Stark marched through in full Iron Man armor, flanked by Hank Pym and a heavily armed squad of silver Ultron security drones and the rest of the Avengers.

"My data says we're seven hundred meters underground," Tony's voice rang out, heavy with metallic sarcasm. "Well, that explains why S.H.I.E.L.D. never found you. You guys literally live under a rock."

Steve raised his vibranium shield, his eyes locking onto the old man. "Wolfgang von Strucker. You have to be pushing a hundred. How did you dodge the postwar tribunals?"

"It is a pleasure to see you again, Captain," Baron Strucker smiled.

Strucker didn't raise a weapon. Instead, a Hydra soldier stepped forward and voluntarily dropped to his knees. Strucker placed his prosthetic right hand against the soldier's temple. A sickly red light pulsed. Within three seconds, the soldier collapsed into a desiccated, mummified husk.

Strucker inhaled sharply. The wrinkles vanished from his face. His stooped spine snapped straight. The frail old man transformed into a heavily muscled, ruthless commander in his physical prime.

"I chose a highly decorated warrior to sacrifice his vitality for our reunion," Strucker said, rolling his broad shoulders. "Come, Captain. Let me build Hydra's new era on the ashes of the Avengers."

"I watched the Red Skull burn," Steve barked, tightening his grip on his shield. "You're next. Avengers, Assemble!"

"Technically, the guy with the claws isn't on the payroll," Tony quipped, his repulsors powering up with a high-pitched whine. "Also, minor issue, guys. We need to locate their central control hub. If Hydra triggers a localized cave-in, the entire city of Budapest drops into a seven-hundred-meter sinkhole."

A blaring, deafening siren interrupted him.

Self-destruct sequence initiated, a mechanized voice echoed in harsh German. T-minus ten minutes.

"Avengers, attack!" Steve roared.

The temple exploded into chaos. Tony, Pym, Hulk, Thor, Wasp, Black Panther and the Ultron drones blasted straight through the Hydra infantry line, abandoning the skirmish to hunt down the command center.

Steve hurled his shield like a spinning buzzsaw. Strucker didn't even flinch. The Baron grabbed a passing Hydra trooper by the collar and shoved the man directly into the vibranium shield's path. The soldier's ribs shattered, and Strucker sprinted deeper into the shadows of the temple.

"Hold the line, Queens!" Steve yelled to Peter, catching his rebounding shield. "Reinforcements are inbound!"

"Reinforcements?" Peter shouted, webbing two soldiers to a marble pillar. "Who else is coming?"

"The Wild Pack!"

PS: Marvel Fun Fact!

Baron Wolfgang von Strucker's horrifying ability to drain the youth and life force from his own soldiers comes courtesy of the "Satan Claw." In the comics, this cybernetic gauntlet doesn't just grant him superhuman strength and electrical blasts—it actively keeps him young by siphoning vitality! Hydra's supreme commander is literally a vampire fueled by the absolute loyalty of his fanatic troops!
