Chapter 19 - The Silver Core

The heavy oak door cracked under the Vanguard guards' assault. Wood splintered. Hinges groaned.

Kaelen did not hesitate. He drove his shadowy black claw directly into the assassin's crushed chest. The dark talons bypassed the broken stealth armor and pierced flesh. He did not trigger the devouring flames. He did not turn the body to ash. His fingers sought the dense, swirling center of the man's magic.

He clenched his fist and ripped his arm backward.

A brilliant silver crystal tore free from the assassin's sternum. It pulsed with pure, concentrated Aether. The man gasped his final breath and went completely limp. Without the chaotic energy of the Void Core consuming the entire body, the corpse remained intact. It looked like a standard, brutal kill.

Kaelen shoved the glowing core deep into his pocket. The shadowy claw melted back into his normal skin.

The oak door exploded inward.

Three Platinum-armored guards surged into the suite. Their repeating crossbows swept the room, humming with lethal kinetic charges. They cleared the corners, the shattered bathroom wall, and finally locked onto Kaelen standing over the bleeding assassin.

"Weapons down!" the lead guard barked.

Kaelen slowly raised his empty, bloodstained hands. He kept his breathing heavy, playing the role of an exhausted, terrified initiate.

The guards cautiously approached. The leader kicked the assassin's short-sword away and inspected the sparking stealth suit. He ripped the dark visor off the dead man's face. Beneath the mask, a faint golden crest was tattooed onto the killer's neck.

It was the soaring hawk of House Valerius.

"A Silver Tier Silencer," the guard whispered in absolute disbelief. He looked up at Kaelen, taking in the boy's ragged towel and bare, bruised fists. "How did you survive this? How did an Iron initiate crush a Silencer's ribcage?"

"He tried to stab me through the mirror," Kaelen said, his voice perfectly steady. "He missed. I hit him as hard as I could, and his stealth suit malfunctioned. It exploded."

It was a weak lie, but the devastating shockwave of Kaelen's stored kinetic energy had completely destroyed the assassin's advanced armor. The twisted metal and localized crater in the floor made the explosion theory plausible.

The lead guard frowned, clearly suspicious, but a dead Valerius assassin in the Vanguard barracks was a massive political scandal. "Secure the perimeter," he ordered his men. "Wrap this body up before the other initiates see it. And get this boy a new room."

Thirty minutes later, Kaelen sat alone in a dark, heavily secured suite on the top floor of the barracks. The Vanguard had placed two armed guards outside his door for his own protection.

He was finally safe.

Kaelen locked the door, drew the heavy velvet curtains, and sat on the edge of the pristine mattress. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the Silver Tier Aether core. It illuminated the dark room with a beautiful, freezing light.

The Void Core in his chest roared with ravenous hunger. It thrashed violently against his ribs, demanding the meal it had been denied.

"Calm down," Kaelen whispered. "It's yours."

He pressed the silver crystal directly against his sternum.

Shadowy tendrils erupted from his chest, wrapping around the core like greedy serpents. The absorption was instantaneous. Unlike the agonizing liquid fire of beast essence, the refined human core flooded his veins with an icy, absolute clarity. His senses expanded exponentially. He could hear the guards breathing outside the heavy door. He could feel the ambient Aether shifting in the air around him.

The interface shattered into a brilliant, blinding silver.

[Core Extracted: Silver Tier Human.] [High-density Aetheric Essence absorbed.] [Host Evolution Triggered.] [Advancing to Bronze Tier.]

Kaelen gasped as his bones cracked and thickened. His muscles coiled tighter, packing an immense, unnatural density into his lean frame. The Ironclad Carapace integrated deeper into his cellular structure, turning his skin as tough as tempered steel without losing any flexibility.

[Stats Acquired.] [Strength +25] [Agility +20] [Stamina +30] [Mana Capacity Doubled.]

Kaelen flexed his hands. The sheer power radiating from his body was terrifying. He was no longer a mortal scavenger. He had officially broken through the limits of humanity. He was a Bronze Tier combatant.

Then, the silver text flickered, shifting into a deep, ominous purple.

[Extracting target memories...] [Skill Acquired: Shadow Step (Active)] [Description: Host can instantaneously teleport between shadows within a fifty-yard radius. Consumes moderate Mana.]

A cold smile stretched across Kaelen's face. House Valerius had sent an assassin to end his life, but they had merely delivered him the exact tools he needed to destroy them. He walked over to the window and peered through a sliver in the curtains. He looked toward the towering, golden spires of the noble district.

"My turn," Kaelen whispered.

[Prey Locked.]
