Chapter 11 - The Vanguard Offer

SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS 10 CHAPTERS

Betrayed by the Ironclad Guild and thrown into the toxic Lower Tiers, Kaelen discovers his "defective" Void Core is actually a System that devours enemies for stats and skills. To survive the core's hunger, he hunts beasts and violent street thugs, acquiring abilities like Street Stealth and Ironclad Carapace. During a forced evolution, he encounters Lyra, a High Tier knight suffering from magical overload, and saves her by siphoning her excess energy. After the Scrap Gang destroys their shelter, Kaelen assaults their stronghold alone and slays their mutated leader to gain the 'Aether Slash' skill. His victory is interrupted by the sudden arrival of a cynical, one-armed Vanguard Captain named Vane.

The toxic smog swirled around the silver boots of Captain Vane. The one armed man did not draw his heavy broadsword. He simply stood in the ruined courtyard and inspected the devastation. His sharp eyes tracked the deep trench carved by the Aether Slash. He noted the shattered iron walls and the lingering smell of ozone.

Finally, his gaze locked onto the pile of gray ash at Kaelen's feet.

"A Bronze Tier mutant reduced to cinders," Vane said. His voice was casual, but his eyes were entirely calculating. "And two dead lieutenants inside the outpost. You do very thorough work for an unranked slum scavenger."

Kaelen did not relax his stance. He kept the chipped Vanguard dagger gripped tightly in his hand. The stolen dark energy still coursed through his veins. He calculated the distance between them.

"You have been watching me," Kaelen stated coldly.

"Only since the outpost collapsed," Vane replied. He took a slow step forward. "I was tracking Lyra. She is my subordinate. I found her unconscious in the rubble and secured her safety. When she woke up, she babbled a very interesting story about a boy who eats magic."

Kaelen felt his heart freeze. The Void Core pulsed with a sudden, violent warning. If the Vanguard Guild knew about his devouring ability, they would dissect him alive. The Ironclad Guild had already branded him a parasite. A High Tier captain would execute him on the spot.

Kaelen channeled his newly acquired Aether Slash. A faint purple aura ignited around his dagger. He prepared to fight to the death.

Vane saw the glowing blade and laughed. It was a harsh, barking sound.

"Put the butter knife away, kid," Vane sighed. He casually released a fraction of his own Aether.

The pressure was instantaneous and completely suffocating. It did not feel like the dirty, polluted magic of the gang leader. It felt like a falling mountain. The sheer kinetic weight forced Kaelen to his knees. The purple aura around his dagger snuffed out instantly. The toxic smog in the courtyard blew away, repelled by the absolute purity of Vane's power.

Silver Tier. Or maybe even Gold. The gap between them was an unbridgeable canyon.

"I am not here to arrest you," Vane said, pulling his oppressive aura back completely. "I don't care how you killed that mutant. I don't care about your strange magic. The Vanguard Guild is bleeding men in the Abyss. We need survivors. We need killers. You are clearly both."

Kaelen gasped for air, his lungs burning. The crushing weight vanished, but his instincts still screamed at him to run. "You want to recruit me."

"I want to see if you can survive the real world," Vane corrected. He reached into his pristine uniform and tossed a small object through the air.

Kaelen caught it with his free hand. It was a heavy, polished bronze token engraved with a shield and sword.

"That is an exam token," Vane explained. "The Vanguard Guild holds its initiate trials tomorrow at noon. The Hub is located in Sector One of the Upper Tiers. If you want to rot in the mud down here, throw it away. If you want a real weapon and a chance to bleed the arrogant nobles dry, show up."

Vane turned his back on Kaelen. He did not wait for an answer. The one armed captain simply walked into the shadows of the breached gate and vanished into the mist.

Kaelen stared at the bronze token in his palm. The metal felt warm. He looked around the ruined stronghold. There was nothing left for him in the Lower Tiers. He had devoured the apex predator of the Deep Sump and slaughtered the local gang. He needed stronger prey to feed his Void Core. He needed a path upward.

"Sector One," Kaelen whispered. He pocketed the token and sheathed his dagger.

He moved through the slums with his Street Stealth active, avoiding the scattered patrols of remaining thugs. He found the massive, rusted gear lift that connected the Scrap Chutes to the surface. He slipped past the sleeping guard and activated the ascent lever.

The heavy iron platform shuddered and began to rise. The journey took hours, carrying him through the dark strata of the floating continents. The toxic smog slowly thinned. The air grew colder and incredibly crisp.

When the lift finally slammed into the docking bay of Sector One, blinding golden sunlight flooded Kaelen's vision.

He stepped off the platform. The Upper Tiers were a sprawling utopia of white marble, floating gardens, and soaring crystal spires. Clean, pristine Aether flowed freely through the air. It was a stark, sickening contrast to the rotting hell he had just escaped.

Kaelen took a deep breath. The pure magic tasted sweet. The Void Core in his chest thrummed with hungry anticipation.

"Stop right there, street rat."

A voice dripped with absolute disdain.

Kaelen blinked against the bright sunlight. Standing at the end of the docking pier were three teenagers dressed in immaculate, gold trimmed robes. They wore polished rapiers at their hips. The leader, a tall boy with slicked blonde hair, sneered down his nose at Kaelen's bloodstained, ragged clothes.

"The servant lift is around the back," the blonde noble scoffed, resting his hand on his jeweled sword hilt. "Turn around and crawl back down, parasite. You are polluting my air."

Kaelen looked at the arrogant noble. He looked at the glowing Aether crystal embedded in the boy's expensive sword. A cold, ruthless smile crept across Kaelen's face.

The interface flashed a brilliant blue.
