Chapter 5 - Chapter 5:DYING GRID

ELARA'S POV

The smell of antiseptic hit me like a slap in the face, cutting through the familiar smells of my workshop. The metallic tang of old copper and the stale smell of oil. I was sitting on my old stool, my knees almost touching Kaelen's, as I gently cleaned the deep cut on his arm. The air in the small room felt heavy and tense, like it was hard to breathe. The only sound was the soft hum of the violet thread that was pulsing between our hands, and it seemed to be making everything feel even more intense. Without the excitement of the chase to take our minds off things, the silence between us felt suffocating.

The fancy gold pattern on his skin, a sign of his important job as an Enforcer, was still buzzing, but it was a weak and fading sound, like a tiny insect trying to fly but stuck behind a window. When I looked really closely, I could see the tiny wires that made up the pattern starting to turn a dull gray, like they were losing their power and life.

"Your energy is slipping away," I said, trying to sound calm despite the shake in my hands. "Without the main link to the Spire, your core is barely hanging on. You're losing power way faster than you're losing blood. The Grid doesn't like to share, Kaelen. It wants back what it gave you, and it's trying to take it now. We need to do something, or you'll be gone for good."

Kaelen didn't respond right away, his eyes fixed on a small, salvaged power cell sitting on my desk. The soft blue glow of a malfunctioning data-vial cast an eerie light on his face, and he seemed to be lost in thought. "Is that what it's like?" he asked finally, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Being a Glitch, I mean, existing on the scraps of a world that's basically discarded you?" He paused, his gaze still locked on the power cell, as if searching for answers in its gentle pulse.

"I'm just getting by," I said, securing the bandage with a familiar ease. "You get used to not having the gold. You realize the light isn't a blessing, it's a chain. But you..." My gaze met his, and I saw the artificial gold glow that had defined him for so long was almost gone. All that was left was his pale, human skin and a raw vulnerability that hurt my chest. "Your body has been boosted by high-frequency resonance for six years. Your heart, lungs, and brain, they've forgotten how to work on their own. I'm not sure you can handle the withdrawal."

As soon as I spoke, Kaelen's body jerked violently, like he'd been punched in the gut. He let out a sharp gasp, grabbing his chest as if his lungs had frozen solid. The last of the Grid's power flickered out inside him, and his eyes went wide with a raw, animal fear. Then, his whole body gave out, and he slumped against me, his head falling heavy on my shoulder.

"Kaelen!" I shouted, my heart racing with fear. He was slipping away, his skin icy cold, and I could feel our special bond, the violet tether, starting to weaken and flutter like a flame in a strong wind.

KAELEN'S POV

It was the emptiness that took my breath away.

For what felt like an eternity, six years to be exact, I had been connected to the Grid's energy. It was like having a constant companion inside me, a warm and comforting presence that gave me strength, clarity of thought, and made me feel almost superhuman. But now, it was gone, cut off like a switch had been flipped, and the silence was overwhelming. A huge empty space where once there was a vibrant, pulsing energy. It was like going from being part of a beautiful orchestra to being alone in a quiet room. The stillness was deafening.

The disconnect was total. My limbs felt impossibly heavy, a gray, toxic fatigue spreading through my veins like molten lead. I couldn't draw a breath. I felt like a golden idol stripped of its soul, left to crumble into dust in the dark. I collapsed against Elara, my forehead resting against the crook of her neck. I was a mountain of useless metal and flesh falling into a sea of shadow and rags.

"Kaelen, please, don't leave me!" she cried out, her words echoing above me like a lifeline, but I felt like I was sinking, trapped in a dark, icy sea, with no way to reach her.

I felt the cold tide rising in my lungs. I was slipping away, the darkness finally winning. But then, a spark ignited in the center of the void.

It began with our hands clasped together. The Violet Interference, once a burning rope or a painful shackle, had transformed. As I started to fade away, I felt her blue energy surging into the empty space within me. It was a wild, cool, and raw sensation, nothing like the energy the Council had ever allowed. Instead of trying to alter my DNA or command my loyalty, it simply filled the void with a fierce and stubborn warmth.

As I felt her energy course through me, my body jerked violently, like I was having some kind of silent fit. But then my heart started beating again, thanks to the shock of her power. It was like a defibrillator had kicked in, restarting my circulation with a jolt. I took a deep breath, and it was like ice had filled my lungs, but at least I was breathing. When I looked over at Elara, her face was blurry because of the intense light emanating from our joined hands. It was no longer just a connection between us. She had literally brought me back to life. I was alive, and it was all because of her.

The gold was gone. And I realized, with a terrifying clarity, that I never wanted it back.
