Protocol Three tested frequency interference patterns: if the full-spectrum model was correct, certain combinations of standard elemental mana should produce measurable interference effects at predictable frequencies. The existing model predicted no such effects.
The setup: six mana-generation stones, each calibrated to one of the six lower elements (lightning excluded at Kael's request — the upper harmonic interference patterns for lightning were complex enough to muddy the comparison). The stones would fire simultaneously; a resonance detector array would measure what happened.
Under the existing model: six parallel mana streams, no interaction. Under the Unified Frequency Theory: interference patterns at the frequency intersections, with peaks and troughs in a mathematically specific arrangement.
Kael had calculated the expected interference pattern to seven decimal places.

The pattern was not the existing model's prediction. The pattern matched Kael's calculations to five decimal places — with deviation at the sixth and seventh attributable to instrument precision limits.
The laboratory was very quiet for a very long time.
Professor Voss, standing in the observation row, looked at the output with the expression of a man watching a building he thought was stable develop a crack.
Grand Instructor Holt studied the output for approximately ninety seconds, which was the most time she typically needed to make a decision.
"The research authorization is expanded," she said. "Student Dravion will present the complete Unified Frequency Theory to a formal faculty symposium in three months. In the interim, I'm suspending the sorting examination pending recalibration review."
The ripple through the assembled faculty was visible. Several looked pleased. Several looked the way Voss looked.
Sorn looked the way someone looks when they've been right about something and are too professional to say so.
Kael was already writing.

And somewhere upstream of all of it, a two-hundred-year-old decision to suppress this exact knowledge.
Which meant somewhere upstream, someone had a stake in keeping it suppressed.
He wrote in the margin of his notebook, very small: *Watch who argues against the recalibration. That's where the thread starts.*
He looked up from the page. Scanned the observation row.
Voss was obvious — academic identity, defensible.
But two of the other senior faculty, standing slightly apart from the others, were talking quietly, their expressions not distressed but... calculated.
Different quality of reaction. Not shock. Not resistance.
Recognition.
*They knew*, Kael thought. *Not all of it. But some of it.*
He made a note of their names.
Added them to the list next to Voss. Different column.
*Voss — resistant.* *Aldren, Farce — aware. Calculating response.*
He closed the notebook.
Three months until the symposium. Three months to complete the theory, secure the archive evidence, and understand who, exactly, he was about to inform that their secret was out.
He had survived thirty-one years of academia on Earth. He was, in this body, ten years old.
But the mind, he found, was exactly the same.
And it had never, once in his entire life, lost a fight it had entered with full preparation.
He walked out of the laboratory into the cold air of the Academy courtyard, pulled his jacket tighter against the chill, and thought about what to do next.
He was, still, officially, an F-Rank student with no mana affinity.
He found this detail almost charming.
