The question hung in the air as every pair of eyes at the table turned toward Amara. For a brief moment her mind went completely blank. Adrian's father was watching her closely, his sharp gaze filled with quiet authority. Sophia leaned slightly back in her chair with a faint smile, clearly enjoying the situation. Amara could feel Adrian's hand still holding hers under the table, firm and steady, reminding her to stay calm. She took a slow breath and looked directly at Adrian's father. "My intentions?" she repeated softly. The older man nodded once. "Yes." Amara thought carefully before answering. "I think intentions become serious when two people choose to stand beside each other even when it isn't convenient." The room remained silent. Adrian's father didn't interrupt, so she continued. "I know I don't come from the same world as your family," she said honestly. "And I understand why that might be difficult to accept." Sophia's smile widened slightly. But Amara didn't look at her. Instead she kept her eyes on Adrian's father. "But I also believe that relationships aren't built on money or status." She paused briefly. "They're built on trust." Adrian's father studied her face carefully, searching for any sign of hesitation. Amara kept her expression calm even though her heart was beating faster with every second. Finally the older man leaned back slowly in his chair. "That's an interesting answer," he said. Sophia let out a quiet laugh. "Interesting doesn't mean convincing." Adrian immediately looked at her. "Sophia." She raised her hands slightly in mock innocence. "What? I'm simply being honest." Adrian's father lifted his hand slightly, signaling everyone to remain quiet. "Whether convincing or not," he said calmly, "the evening is not the place for arguments." The tension at the table eased slightly. Dessert was served and the conversations slowly returned, though the earlier warmth was gone. Amara could still feel the curious glances from some of the guests. After a few minutes Adrian leaned slightly toward her and spoke quietly so only she could hear. "You handled that well." Amara exhaled slowly. "I almost panicked." Adrian's lips moved slightly in what looked like the beginning of a smile. "But you didn't." Across the table Sophia watched them carefully, her expression thoughtful rather than openly hostile now. It was the look of someone planning something. Eventually the dinner ended and the guests began moving toward the large living room for drinks and conversation. Adrian stood and gently guided Amara with him. As they walked away from the table, Adrian's stepmother Eleanor approached them with a warm smile. "Amara," she said kindly, "you handled yourself very well tonight." Amara smiled politely. "Thank you." Eleanor leaned slightly closer. "My husband can be intimidating. Don't take his questions too seriously." Adrian raised an eyebrow. "You mean Father doesn't interrogate every guest?" Eleanor laughed softly. "Only the interesting ones." Before Amara could respond, Sophia suddenly appeared beside them. Her expression was calm but her eyes were sharp. "Amara," she said smoothly, "may I borrow you for a moment?" Adrian immediately frowned. "Why?" Sophia smiled sweetly. "Relax, Adrian. I just want to talk." Adrian looked at Amara, silently asking if she was comfortable. Amara hesitated for a moment but then nodded slightly. "It's fine." Adrian didn't look convinced but stepped back. "We'll be right over there," he said firmly, pointing toward a nearby seating area. Sophia nodded. "Of course." She gently guided Amara toward a quieter corner of the room near the large windows. Once they were far enough away from the others, Sophia's polite smile slowly disappeared. She crossed her arms and looked at Amara carefully. "You're smarter than I expected," she said. Amara remained calm. "Thank you, I think." Sophia tilted her head slightly. "But you should know something." Amara waited. Sophia leaned slightly closer and lowered her voice. "Adrian's father might be patient tonight… but he will investigate you." Amara felt her stomach tighten slightly but kept her expression steady. Sophia continued speaking softly. "When he discovers where you really come from… and what you really do at that company… this little act will fall apart." Amara met her gaze calmly. "Maybe." Sophia's eyes narrowed slightly. "You're very confident for someone in your position." Amara shrugged lightly. "Confidence is useful." Sophia studied her for a long moment before smiling again, though this time the smile looked colder than before. "Enjoy tonight while it lasts," she said quietly. "Because this story you're playing in…" She leaned closer and finished her sentence in a whisper. "Never ends well for girls like you." Then she turned and walked back toward the others, leaving Amara standing alone by the window with a growing feeling that the real trouble had only just begun.
