The light pouring from the ancient door did not look like ordinary light.
It moved.
Soft waves of silver and pale gold pulsed from the runes carved along its edges, spreading across the circular chamber like living breath. Dust rose from the ground and shimmered in the air, turning the abandoned hall into something sacred, something ancient.
Lyra slowly pushed herself up from the floor.
Her body still trembled from the explosion of energy that had thrown her back, but the moment her eyes landed on the door, a strange calm filled her chest.
It felt… familiar.
Not the room.
Not the runes.
But the door.
As if she had stood before it once before.
Or maybe many times.
Kael moved beside her, his hand instinctively hovering near her shoulder as if ready to catch her again if the ground shifted.
"Are you hurt?" he asked quietly.
Lyra shook her head slowly, unable to look away from the glowing runes.
"I feel… strange."
Maelis stepped forward, her silver hair floating slightly as the magic from the door stirred the air.
"This," she said, her voice calm but heavy with meaning, "is a Gate of Memory."
Lyra blinked.
"A gate?"
Maelis nodded.
"Not a gate of places… but of lives."
Lyra's breath caught.
The runes began to glow brighter as if reacting to her presence.
"You mean… my past lives?"
"Yes."
Maelis slowly circled the door, studying the shifting symbols.
"These gates appear only when a soul begins to awaken its forgotten memories. It means the cycle that binds you… has reached another turning point."
Kael's jaw tightened slightly.
"And it means the enemy will come faster now," he added quietly.
Lyra turned to him.
"Enemy?"
Before he could answer, the runes on the door flared again.
Suddenly—
A voice echoed in Lyra's mind.
Not loud.
Not threatening.
But ancient.
Child of the wandering soul…
Lyra gasped and grabbed her head.
Kael stepped closer instantly.
"Lyra!"
"I heard something," she whispered.
Maelis watched carefully.
"What did it say?"
Lyra swallowed.
"Child of the wandering soul…"
Maelis's expression grew serious.
"That voice belongs to the gate itself."
Lyra stared at the door.
"You mean… it's alive?"
"In a way," Maelis replied. "These gates were created long ago by guardians of the cycle. They only open when a soul is ready to face the truth of its past."
Lyra hesitated.
"And if I'm not ready?"
Kael finally spoke again, his voice quiet but steady.
"Then the gate will show you anyway."
Lyra's heart skipped.
The glowing symbols shifted again.
Suddenly—
A single rune detached from the door and floated through the air.
It drifted slowly toward Lyra.
Neither Kael nor Maelis moved.
They simply watched.
The rune hovered in front of Lyra's chest.
For a moment she froze.
Then it sank into her skin like light sinking into water.
Lyra gasped.
The world shattered.
She was standing in a forest.
But not the one outside Belrain.
This forest was older.
Massive trees twisted toward a dark purple sky, their branches heavy with glowing flowers. The air smelled of rain and burning leaves.
Lyra looked down at herself.
Her clothes were different.
A long dark cloak wrapped around her body.
Her hands were gloved.
But the strangest part—
She felt stronger.
Older.
Wiser.
She knew how to move in this world.
She knew this place.
A voice behind her spoke.
"You came back."
Lyra turned.
Kael stood there.
But not the Kael she knew.
This Kael wore armor etched with ancient symbols. His hair was longer, tied loosely behind his neck. A scar ran across his cheek.
Yet his eyes were the same.
Blue.
Deep.
Familiar.
Lyra felt her chest tighten.
"Kael…"
He stepped closer slowly.
"I thought the gate took you forever this time."
Lyra blinked.
"Forever?"
He smiled faintly.
"You always say that when you return."
Return.
The word echoed inside her mind.
As if this was not their first meeting.
Or even their hundredth.
"You remember me," he said softly.
Lyra opened her mouth to answer.
But before she could speak—
The ground trembled.
A cold wind swept through the forest.
Kael's expression changed instantly.
"They found us."
Lyra's heart raced.
"Who?"
But Kael had already drawn a sword.
Black smoke began to gather between the trees.
From within the shadows, figures emerged.
Tall.
Faceless.
Their bodies made of shifting darkness.
Lyra's stomach dropped.
The same presence she had felt in her visions.
One of the creatures stepped forward.
Its voice sounded like broken whispers.
"Bound souls… must be severed."
Kael moved in front of Lyra immediately.
"Stay behind me."
But Lyra felt something inside her ignite.
A memory.
Not a vision.
A skill.
Her hands lifted instinctively.
Silver light burst from her palms.
The creatures shrieked as the light touched them.
Kael turned, surprised.
"You remember already?"
Lyra didn't understand what she was doing.
But her body did.
Another wave of light shot forward.
The shadows recoiled.
Yet more of them kept emerging from the trees.
Too many.
Kael stepped beside her again.
"We can't fight them all."
"What do we do?"
Kael grabbed her wrist.
"Run."
They sprinted through the glowing forest.
The creatures followed like living smoke.
Lyra's heart pounded.
"Where are we going?!"
"To the gate!"
"What gate?!"
But Kael didn't answer.
Instead he pulled her through the trees toward a glowing circle carved into the ground.
The same runes.
The same symbols.
Another gate.
Kael stopped at its edge.
"This is where you leave."
Lyra stared at him.
"Leave?"
"Yes."
"But you're coming with me!"
Kael shook his head slowly.
"Not this time."
Her chest tightened painfully.
"No."
"You have to go."
The shadows were closing in.
Lyra grabbed his arm.
"I'm not leaving you!"
For a moment Kael looked at her the same way he had in the present.
Soft.
Sad.
Certain.
"You always say that."
The creatures were almost upon them now.
Kael placed his hand over hers.
"When the next life begins… find me again."
Lyra's vision blurred.
"No—"
The gate beneath her feet exploded with light.
And everything vanished.
Lyra woke up screaming.
She collapsed forward onto the stone floor of the chamber.
Kael caught her before she hit the ground.
"Lyra!"
Her breathing was wild.
Her hands clutched his shirt tightly.
"I saw you die," she whispered.
The room fell silent.
Kael froze.
Maelis watched them carefully.
Lyra looked up at him.
"You stayed behind."
Kael didn't answer.
His silence said everything.
Lyra's voice shook.
"That memory… it happened, didn't it?"
Kael looked away.
Maelis finally spoke.
"Yes."
Lyra turned to her.
"That was one of your past lives."
Her stomach twisted.
"And Kael…?"
Maelis nodded slowly.
"He has died for you many times."
Lyra felt tears burn her eyes.
"But why?"
Neither of them answered immediately.
Then Kael finally spoke quietly.
"Because every life we share… ends the same way."
Lyra's chest tightened.
"What way?"
Kael looked back at her.
His eyes held centuries of exhaustion.
"One of us dies."
The room went still.
Lyra whispered,
"So the cycle repeats…"
"Yes."
Maelis stepped closer to the gate again.
"And something is trying to break that cycle."
Lyra wiped her tears.
"The shadows."
"Yes."
Kael's voice darkened.
"They are called the Severants."
Lyra frowned.
"Severants?"
"They hunt souls bound by destiny."
Lyra felt cold.
"And we're bound."
Kael nodded.
"More than anyone else."
Lyra slowly looked back at the glowing door.
"So if we don't stop them…"
Maelis finished the sentence.
"The cycle ends."
Lyra's heart dropped.
"And if the cycle ends?"
Kael answered quietly.
"Then one of us will disappear forever."
The runes on the gate flickered again.
As if responding.
Then suddenly—
Another voice echoed through the chamber.
Not ancient.
Not calm.
Cold.
Mocking.
"Well… well."
The three of them turned instantly.
A tall figure stood in the doorway of the chamber.
Dressed in black.
Eyes glowing faint crimson.
He smiled slowly.
"I was wondering when the gate would finally open."
Kael's body went rigid.
"Lyra."
His voice was tense now.
"Don't move."
But Lyra already felt the danger pouring off the stranger like poison.
The man stepped forward.
"Such a beautiful reunion."
His gaze locked onto Lyra.
"You must be the soul that refuses to stay dead."
Lyra swallowed.
"Who are you?"
The man bowed slightly.
"My name is Vareth."
His smile widened.
"And I've been trying to kill you… for the last six lifetimes."
The room exploded with tension.
Kael stepped in front of Lyra instantly.
"Stay behind me."
Vareth chuckled.
"You said that the last three times too."
Lyra's stomach dropped.
Kael's hand clenched into a fist.
"Leave."
Vareth tilted his head.
"Oh I will."
His red eyes returned to Lyra.
"But not before saying hello to the girl who keeps breaking fate."
The runes on the gate suddenly began to burn brighter.
Vareth looked at them with interest.
"Oh?"
He smiled again.
"So the next life has begun already."
His gaze sharpened.
"Good."
Lyra felt a chill run through her spine.
"Why?"
Vareth's voice lowered to a whisper.
"Because this time…"
His smile turned cruel.
"I plan to end the cycle for good."
The chamber shook violently.
The gate erupted with blinding light.
And for the first time since her awakening—
Lyra realized the truth.
The war for her soul…
had already begun.
