Chapter 6 - Helix Academy: Where the Elite Learn to Break Things Politely

The first official day of Vesper Vale's enrollment at Helix Academy began with three disasters before noon.

None of them were technically her fault.

That did not stop anyone from blaming her.

Disaster One: The Uniform Incident

The Academy uniform was an insult.

It was a fitted white and silver bodice with structured shoulders and micro-threaded adaptive panels designed to react to light. Elegant. Restrictive. Impractical.

Vesper stood in front of the mirror in her assigned suite.

Lyra flopped dramatically across the velvet chaise.

"You look like you're about to overthrow a small government," Lyra announced.

"I might," Vesper muttered, adjusting the collar. "Why is this collar so high?"

"It's meant to convey discipline."

"It's meant to choke."

A knock came at the door.

Kael.

He leaned against the frame, perfectly tailored in his own uniform, gloves back on.

"You're late."

"I was suffocating."

"That's standard."

She stared at him.

"Is it required that you be insufferable before breakfast?"

He smiled lazily.

"It's genetic."

She leaned closer to the mirror.

The fabric shimmered slightly under her touch.

And then—

It hardened.

She blinked.

The entire uniform shifted density with her reflex.

Lyra gasped.

"Oh no."

The material compacted into something closer to metallic armor.

Vesper tried to relax.

It stayed hardened.

Kael's composure cracked.

"Why do you look battle-ready?"

"I don't know!"

Lyra burst into laughter.

"You're going to school dressed for war."

Kael smirked.

"That's fitting."

Disaster Two: Manifestation Placement

Helix Academy sorted students not by age, but by power sophistication.

Vesper walked into the assessment hall where holographic faculty members hovered like judgmental ghosts.

Instructor Halvorsen returned, stern as ever.

"We will calibrate your density modulation under controlled stress."

She sighed. "Define stress."

He activated a laser grid chamber.

Students gathered above in observation tiers.

Kael stood among them.

Aurelio Orsini was present as well — dark uniform, unreadable expression.

And beside him—

A girl with mirrored eyes and light-threaded hair.

Valentina Orsini.

Originally intended to marry Kael.

She was relieved about that change.

Publicly.

Privately—

Not entirely.

Vesper stepped into the chamber.

The grid activated.

Fine beams of concentrated plasma cut across the room in shifting patterns.

"Pass through without triggering structural alarms," Halvorsen commanded.

She softened.

Stepped forward.

The lasers sliced through her like light through mist.

Gasps.

She re-solidified.

One beam caught her shoulder.

She hardened instantly.

The beam ricocheted.

Shattered a sensor.

Set off alarms.

Students screamed.

Faculty scrambled.

Kael muttered, "Of course."

Vesper looked up at the balcony.

"Is that extra credit?"

Halvorsen pinched his nose.

"You are not subtle."

She shrugged.

"Subtlety is inefficient."

Valentina laughed softly.

Aurelio did not.

He watched carefully.

Not her power.

Her control.

Disaster Three: The Cafeteria War

Elite students were not accustomed to public humiliation.

Which is why Vesper's accidental destabilization prank spread like wildfire.

A group of second-tier Architect sons attempted to corner her near the hydration bar.

"You think you're better because of one flashy display?" one sneered.

She considered them.

"No. I think I'm better because I can do math."

The tray beneath their drinks softened.

Just slightly.

Not enough to collapse.

Enough to wobble.

They grabbed at each other.

Aurelio, standing nearby, arched a brow.

Valentina whispered, "She's doing that deliberately."

Kael stepped forward.

"That's enough."

She turned to him.

"Is it?"

He lowered his voice.

"You're making enemies."

She smiled.

"They started it."

"Diplomacy exists for a reason."

"In the Spiral," she said evenly, "if someone threatens you, you don't schedule a summit."

The cafeteria went silent.

Aurelio studied her with new interest.

Valentina folded her arms.

Kael's jaw tightened.

And for the first time, the Academy began to divide into camps.
