Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Empty Seat

The next morning, I walked into the classroom, my bag heavier than usual. I had a strange feeling in my chest... part anticipation, part… worry.

The seat beside me was… empty and i blinked. Maya wasn't there.

"Great," I muttered under my breath, lowering myself into my chair.

The lecturer started class, and I tried to focus, but it was impossible. My eyes kept darting toward the empty seat.

Ten minutes passed, fifteen but still no sign of her.

I sighed. "Maybe she's sick."

Then, from the back of the classroom, I heard a familiar playful voice "Daniel!"

I turned, Maya was standing at the doorway, grinning like she owned the place.

"Late again?" I asked, exasperated.

"Maybe," she said innocently. "But the traffic today was… terrible."

"Campus traffic?" I asked skeptically.

She gave me the same mischievous smile she always did. "Exactly."

I groaned, shaking my head. She slid into the seat beside me, dropping her bag with a thud.

"You know," she whispered conspiratorially, "you looked cute sitting here alone."

"Cute?" I repeated, nearly choking on my pen.

"Yes," she said, nudging my arm softly. "Like a sad puppy waiting for… me."

I rolled my eyes, but a small smile escaped anyway. Halfway through the lecture, she nudged me again.

"What now?" I whispered.

"I'm bored," she said softly, resting her chin on her hand.

"You always say that," I replied, exasperated.

"I know," she said, smirking. "But it's true."

I shook my head and returned to my notes, but I could feel her glancing at me out of the corner of my eye.

Suddenly, she leaned over and grabbed my pen again.

"Hey!" I whispered sharply.

She looked up innocently. "Seat partner duty," she said.

"Duty?"

"Yes," she said, her grin mischievous. "Keeping you on your toes."

I groaned, but I didn't take the pen back immediately. Somehow… I didn't want to.

When the lecture ended, she whispered, "Ready for snacks?"

I blinked. "Already? Class just finished."

"Seat partner duties continue," she said, standing up and pulling her bag onto her shoulder. "Come on."

I stood, following her out of the classroom.

As we walked, she nudged me lightly. "You know," she said softly, "you're funny when you don't talk."

"Funny?" I asked, bewildered.

"Yes," she said, her eyes sparkling. "You make expressions that are… adorable."

I felt my face warm immediately.

She laughed quietly at my reaction. "See? You can't hide it, Daniel."

I shook my head, smiling despite myself, and just like that… the empty seat in class was no longer empty.

It was filled with Maya's playful teasing, soft smiles, and unexpected charm, and for some reason, I realized I wasn't complaining at all.

We walked across campus toward the snack shop again, and as usual, Maya was several steps ahead of me, her bag bouncing with every confident stride.

"Lead the way, seat partner," she said, looking back with that mischievous grin.

"I don't know if I should," I muttered. "You're probably going to embarrass me again."

She gasped dramatically. "Embarrass you? Me? Never."

I raised an eyebrow, unconvinced and when we reached the snack shop, it was busier than yesterday. A group of our classmates were already there, laughing loudly. As soon as they saw Maya, they waved and called out, "Hey, Maya!"

Maya waved back casually and then leaned toward me, whispering: "See? Fans already."

"Fans?" I asked, frowning.

"Yes," she said, nudging my arm. "They clearly know you're my… special seat partner."

I groaned. "You didn't tell them anything, did you?"

She shook her head innocently. "Not yet… but they can tell."

I rolled my eyes as she walked straight to the counter and ordered snacks like she owned the place. Two meat pies, two drinks… and a samosa for herself.

The vendor handed them over, and she shoved a meat pie toward me again.

"Here," she said, grinning. "Your favorite."

I took it, noticing the way some of our classmates were staring.

"You're smiling too much," Maya whispered, nudging me.

"I'm not smiling," I muttered, though a corner of my mouth betrayed me.

"Liar," she said softly, leaning closer so her shoulder brushed mine. "See? I told you you're funny when you don't talk."

I felt my cheeks warm immediately, we walked to an empty table and sat down. For a moment, it was just us and the warm sunlight filtering through the leaves, then Maya leaned over and poked my notebook.

"You write neatly, Daniel, but your notes are missing… doodles. You need doodles for character."

"I don't doodle," I said flatly.

"You should," she said with mock seriousness. "I'm judging your personality by your handwriting."

I groaned. "You're impossible."

"And yet," she said softly, "you let me sit here every day."

I looked at her, and for the first time, our eyes met fully. There was something in her gaze....playful, teasing… but also… soft.

I cleared my throat. "It's… fine."

She smiled, satisfied, then suddenly leaned over and tapped my pen. "By the way… this is still mine."

I blinked. "Still?"

"Yes," she said simply. "You let me borrow it yesterday, so technically it's mine now. Seat partner rules."

I laughed quietly. "Seat partner rules…"

She grinned, leaning back and crossing her arms proudly. "Exactly. And you're following them, Daniel. That's why you're the perfect seat partner."

I shook my head, but I couldn't stop smiling.

Just then, one of our classmates waved and called out: "Daniel! You're with Maya again? Lucky guy!"

Maya nudged me playfully. "See? I told you. Fans."

I groaned and tried to hide my embarrassment. She leaned closer, whispering, "Don't worry. They're harmless… unlike me."

I exhaled, realizing that this girl, the one who stole my pen, my notes, and my quiet seat was slowly taking over my world and honestly… I didn't mind at all.

We had just finished sitting down with our snacks, and I was quietly trying to eat without attracting attention from our classmates.

Maya, of course, had other plans.

"So," she said, leaning over the table, "how's my favorite seat partner enjoying his snacks?"

I frowned slightly. "You said I'm buying next time."

She grinned, poking my arm. "Tomorrow, Daniel. Today… I'm spoiling you."

I sighed, shaking my head, but a small smile tugged at my lips.

Halfway through the meat pie, Maya's hand brushed mine accidentally, of course. Or at least that's what she claimed.

"Watch it!" I whispered, pulling my hand slightly back.

She raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Watch what? You're making it sound like I'm a criminal."

I groaned. "It's just… you're close."

"Am I?" she asked softly, leaning just a little closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

I felt heat rise to my cheeks and quickly looked down at my meat pie.

Just then, disaster almost struck. Maya gestured animatedly while talking about something... something about how my handwriting was "too perfect to be human"... and her samosa slipped from her hand.

It tumbled toward my drink.

"Whoa!" I shouted, reaching out just in time to catch it.

She looked mortified. "Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry!"

I shook my head, laughing nervously. "You're impossible."

"I told you," she said seriously, "seat partner duties can be dangerous."

I raised an eyebrow. "Dangerous?"

"Yes," she whispered, leaning a little closer. "Emotionally dangerous."

I choked slightly on my drink, she noticed immediately and laughed softly. "Relax, Daniel. I'm just kidding… mostly."

I exhaled, feeling my chest warm in a way I couldn't explain, we sat there for a few more minutes, eating quietly, occasionally stealing glances at each other.

Then she leaned back, resting her chin on her hand.

"You know," she said softly, "I'm glad I sit next to you."

I blinked. "Glad?"

"Yes," she said, her eyes meeting mine. "I like it. Being here… with you. It's fun."

I swallowed. "It is… fun."

Her smile widened. "Good. That's exactly how it should feel."

I didn't know why, but her words made my heart beat a little faster. Just as we were about to leave, she nudged me playfully.

"Next time," she said, "don't look so serious all the time, smile more."

I shook my head, trying not to grin. "And if I don't?"

She leaned closer, her voice dropping just slightly. "Then I'll have to sit here every day until you do."

I froze for a moment, every day?

She leaned back, smiling innocently, as if she hadn't just made my heart skip a beat, and somehow… I didn't mind.

Because for the first time, I realized that this girl was becoming something I couldn't ignore.

After the almost disaster with the samosa, we carefully packed the remaining snacks and stepped out of the shop.

Maya walked ahead, her bag slung casually over her shoulder, and I followed, trying to match her energy.

"You know," she said softly, nudging my arm gently, "I could have dropped that samosa on purpose."

I nearly choked on air. "What?!"

She laughed, a soft, melodic laugh that made my chest warm. "Relax. I'm kidding… mostly."

I shook my head, exhaling slowly. "You're impossible."

She tilted her head, giving me that mischievous smile she had perfected. "Maybe, but you let me be, seat partner. That's why I like you."

My steps faltered slightly. Did she just… say she liked me?

I cleared my throat. "You… you like me?"

She shrugged casually. "I like having fun, and having you around is… fun."

"Fun?" I echoed, trying to sound casual, but my heart was beating faster than usual.

"Yes," she said, leaning slightly closer. "Fun comfortable..... makes the day… better."

I felt my cheeks heat up, we walked in silence for a few moments, the sounds of campus students chatting and laughing filling the air.

Then she nudged me again, softly this time. "You know… you should smile more. You hide it too well."

I looked at her, and before I could answer, she bumped my shoulder gently with hers, playfully.

"I'm serious," she whispered. "I like seeing you smile."

I swallowed, feeling my heart skip a beat. "You… really mean that?"

She nodded, her eyes sparkling mischievously. "Of course. Otherwise, I wouldn't sit here every day."

I didn't know what to say, and then she tripped slightly over a small stone in the walkway.

"Whoa!" I grabbed her arm quickly to steady her.

She looked up at me, wide eyed for a second, then laughed softly. "Seat partner saved me again."

I felt heat rush to my face. "I… I didn't do it on purpose."

"Sure," she said teasingly, smirking. "Of course."

We continued walking side by side, closer than before. I noticed how natural it felt, her presence beside me, the playful nudges, the soft teasing, and suddenly, the idea of the semester being ordinary felt… impossible, because Maya, the girl who stole my pen, my notes, my quiet seat, and apparently my heart, had turned everyday moments into something I actually looked forward to.

When we finally reached the gate near my hostel, she stopped and turned to me.

"See you tomorrow, Daniel," she said softly, her grin teasing but her eyes lingering just a moment too long.

I nodded, feeling strangely flustered. "See you, Maya."

As she walked away, I realized that something was changing. This wasn't just playful teasing anymore, i didn't just like having her around.

I… liked her..... a lot, and somehow, knowing that made me both excited and terrified.

After Maya disappeared into the crowd near my hostel, I stood there for a moment, my heart still racing from her teasing words.

"Seat partner saved me again…" I muttered under my breath, shaking my head.

Why did she make everything feel so complicated… yet so simple at the same time?

I walked slowly toward my room, replaying the small moments from the snack shop and our walk back. The way she laughed, the way she leaned close, the way she teased me softly…

My chest felt warm just thinking about it.

I tried to convince myself that it was nothing. Just a friend, I told myself. A mischievous, impossible, annoying friend, but then I remembered the way she said:

"I like seeing you smile." And the way her hand had brushed mine accidentally… or maybe not so accidentally.

I shook my head. "Stop overthinking, Daniel," I muttered, trying to ignore the sudden butterflies in my stomach.

By the time I reached my room, I realized something... Maya wasn't just another student in my class.

She was… different and special. I sat on my bed, notebook in hand, but I couldn't focus on writing anything. My thoughts kept wandering back to her, the way she made even ordinary things, like snacks and a walk across campus, feel exciting.

I couldn't deny it anymore..... I liked her alot, and the thought made me nervous, excited, confused and strangely… happy.

I leaned back on my bed and let out a deep breath.

"Tomorrow," I whispered to myself, "I'm going to see her again."

A small smile crept across my face, because no matter how mischievous, impossible, or teasing she was…

I already knew I didn't want to spend a single day without her by my side and with that thought, I finally let myself relax.

Maya had officially become the best part of my day.
