Chapter 1 - Prologue

The Day the Story Changed.

I knew I was going to die.

Not because I committed a crime.

Not because I deserved it.

But because the story said so.

"Bring the maid forward!"

The command echoed through the grand hall of the imperial palace. Marble floors gleamed beneath towering pillars while nobles whispered like spectators watching a play.

Unfortunately, I was the entertainment.

Two guards dragged me to the center of the room.

My knees hit the cold marble floor.

"This servant is accused of stealing Her Highness's ruby necklace," the head knight declared loudly.

Gasps filled the hall.

But I knew the truth.

The maid didn't steal anything.

Because I had read this scene before.

Last night.

On my phone.

The Crimson Crown — a popular web novel I binge-read until two in the morning.

And now…

I was inside it.

Worse—

I had become the maid who dies in chapter one.

In the novel, the maid was framed by the jealous second princess and executed immediately. Her death served only to show how cruel the imperial palace was.

The author never even bothered to give her a name.

But now, standing on the execution floor, I knew it.

That character was now me.

The knight slowly unsheathed his sword.

The blade gleamed under the palace lights.

My hands trembled.

This is insane.

I woke up in a fictional world, inside a character doomed to die before the story even began.

"Do you have anything to say before your execution?" the knight asked.

My mind raced.

Was there any way to survive this?

In the novel, there wasn't.

This execution happened exactly as written.

Which meant—

This was the end.

Just as the knight raised his sword, a voice echoed through the hall.

"Stop."

The single word was quiet.

But it carried enough authority to silence the entire palace.

The guards froze.

The nobles stopped whispering.

Even the knight lowered his sword immediately.

Heavy footsteps echoed against the marble floor.

One step.

Two.

Three.

A tall figure entered the hall, his long black coat trailing behind him like a shadow.

My heart dropped.

I knew exactly who it was.

Because there was only one man in the novel capable of stopping an execution with a single word.

The empire's most feared noble.

The man destined to become the story's greatest villain.

Duke Casper Lazarus.

He wasn't supposed to appear until chapter thirty.

So why was he here?

The duke stopped in front of me.

Crimson eyes stared down at my kneeling figure.

Cold.

Sharp.

Dangerous.

The entire hall held its breath.

His gaze studied my face as if I were some strange puzzle.

Then he spoke.

"Cancel the execution."

Shock rippled through the nobles.

"Y-Your Grace?" the knight stammered.

Duke Casper Lazarus ignored him.

He stepped closer and lifted my chin with a gloved hand.

Our eyes met.

For a moment, it felt like he could see straight through me.

"Interesting," he murmured.

My heart pounded wildly.

This wasn't how the story was supposed to go.

The duke straightened and addressed the knight.

"This maid," he said calmly, "belongs to me now."

The hall erupted into shocked whispers.

I stared at him in disbelief.

Why would the villain save someone meant to die?

Casper Lazarus looked down at me once more.

And for the briefest moment—

He smiled.

"I think I'll keep her."

And just like that—

The story I knew was no longer the same.
