Chapter 9: Morning Afterglow and Morning Shadows

Zain woke before his alarm, sunlight already slicing through the gap in his curtains. His body felt charged, every muscle humming with the quiet power of Level 7. He lay still for a moment, replaying last night in perfect detail: the park path under streetlamps, cherry petals drifting like slow snow, Sawako rising on her toes to meet his kiss. The memory alone sent warmth curling through his chest.

First kiss. Official girlfriend. Overflow affection locked in. If this is what happens on day three, I can't even imagine day thirty.

He rolled over and grabbed his phone. The Sakura Oppai Alliance group chat was already alive.

Chika (sent at 6:47 AM): [photo of heart-shaped pancakes drowning in syrup] Good morning my beautiful disaster friends~ Who else woke up smiling like an idiot today?? 👀🍓

Yotsuba (6:51 AM): ME ME ME!! I dreamed we all camped on the school roof and roasted marshmallows the size of pillows!! 🔥🪵

Taiga (6:53 AM): It's too early for this much energy. Some of us are trying to sleep.

Hori (6:55 AM): Someone's suspiciously quiet this morning. New guy. You and Sawako vanished last night. Spill.

Sawako (7:02 AM): …Good morning, everyone ♡

Sawako (7:02 AM): I hope you all slept well…

Zain's lips curved. He could picture her typing that last message with both hands over her burning cheeks.

He opened their private chat first.

Zain: Morning, girlfriend ♡

Sawako: …Good morning, boyfriend.

Sawako: I keep smiling like an idiot. My mom asked if I was sick.

Zain: Tell her it's terminal happiness. Doctor's orders: daily doses of Zain required.

Sawako: I think I like that prescription.

He laughed under his breath, set the phone down, and headed to the bathroom. In the mirror he looked… different. Sharper cheekbones, brighter eyes, the faint definition in his shoulders and arms more noticeable even under his sleep shirt. The stats were rewriting him piece by piece, but no one else would ever know why.

Regeneration + Lover's Resolve. I'm basically built to protect her now. And I will. No matter what.

Downstairs his mother was already in the kitchen, rolling out fresh paratha. She glanced at him over her shoulder.

"You're up early, beta. And smiling before chai. Japan is changing you."

Zain stole a piece of dough and popped it into his mouth raw. "Good change, Ammi. Really good."

She swatted his hand with a tea towel, but her eyes were soft. "Just don't forget to study too. Girls are nice, but marks matter."

"Yes, Ammi," he said solemnly, already planning how to sneak extra study time between monster fights and dates.

The walk to school felt lighter than any day before. Cherry blossoms still fell in lazy spirals. The gates welcomed him. And there—standing near the shoe lockers in her perfectly pressed uniform—was Sawako. She spotted him instantly. Her eyes lit up, then darted away in that familiar shy panic, cheeks blooming pink.

Zain walked straight to her, ignoring the curious glances from other students.

"Morning, Sawako-chan."

"G-Good morning, Zain-kun…"

He leaned down without hesitation and pressed a quick, gentle kiss to her forehead—right there in the crowded hallway. She squeaked, hands flying up to cover her face, but she didn't step back.

A ripple of gasps and whispers spread around them.

Sawako peeked through her fingers. "E-everyone's staring…"

"Let them stare." He offered his hand, palm up. "Walk to class with me?"

She hesitated only a heartbeat before slipping her fingers into his. Their hands fit perfectly, like they'd been made for this.

They walked down the corridor hand-in-hand. Whispers followed like a wake. Someone giggled. Someone else whistled softly. Zain didn't care. Sawako's grip tightened once, nervously, then relaxed. By the time they reached Class 2-A she was smiling—small, radiant, unstoppable.

Hori was already at her desk. She looked up, saw their joined hands, and smirked. "Well. That answers that question."

Taiga rolled her eyes so hard it was audible. "Tch. Get a room."

Chika levitated out of her seat. "OFFICIAL?! WHEN?! DETAILS! NOW!"

Kaguya watched from the back row with cool, calculating interest, one elegant eyebrow arched.

Sawako hid half her face behind Zain's shoulder. "Last night… in the park…"

Chika squealed loud enough to earn a glare from the teacher entering the room.

Morning classes passed in a pleasant haze. Zain caught Sawako watching him every few minutes; every time their eyes met she blushed harder and looked away, only to glance back seconds later. During break he slipped a folded note onto her desk.

Lunch rooftop? Just us?

Her reply came back in tiny, careful handwriting: Yes please ♡

The rooftop was theirs alone at lunch. They spread their bentos on the concrete ledge—his spicy chicken from home, hers carefully shaped onigiri that looked like smiling cats.

"I… tried to make them cute," Sawako said, pushing one toward him with shy pride.

Zain took a huge bite and groaned theatrically. "These are lethal. Marry me right now."

Sawako laughed behind her hand. "Don't tease!"

"I'm completely serious. These onigiri just proposed to my stomach."

They ate slowly, shoulders touching, knees brushing. Conversation drifted from favorite anime episodes to embarrassing childhood stories to quiet dreams about the future. Every time Sawako spoke her voice was a little steadier, a little brighter. Zain listened like she was the only sound in the world.

Halfway through the meal he glanced at the sky. The crimson crescent was thicker today—jagged edges creeping inward, swallowing more stars even in daylight. No one else seemed to notice. Not yet.

Sawako followed his gaze. "You looked far away again."

He forced a smile. "Just thinking how lucky I am. That's all."

She reached across the bentos and took both his hands.

"Zain-kun… whatever it is you're carrying, you don't have to carry it alone anymore. Not with me."

Her words were simple. They hit like a skill activation.

He squeezed her fingers. "I know. And I won't. I promise."

They finished lunch in warm silence, hands still linked. When the bell rang they stood together. Sawako rose on her toes and pressed a quick, feather-light kiss to his cheek.

"For courage," she whispered.

Zain's heart stuttered. "Best buff ever."

They walked back downstairs hand-in-hand. As they passed the north side of the building, the crimson shadow overhead seemed to pulse once—slow, deliberate, like a heartbeat.

Sawako squeezed his hand tighter.

Zain squeezed back.

Whatever you are, whatever's coming… you don't get to touch this. Not her. Not any of them.

The afternoon sun still shone bright.

But the eclipse was no longer hiding.

And Zain Ali—the Gamer from Kot Addu—was already planning his next move.
