Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Calm Before the Rumbling

The airship touched down on the emerald fields of Paradis as the first light of dawn broke over the horizon. The victory was hollow, stained by the blood of Marley and the near-loss of a comrade. Sasha was whisked away on a stretcher, still clutching a piece of Ken's "medicinal beef" in her sleep.

Levi and Mikasa kept a close eye on Ken as he stepped off the vessel. He looked perfectly at home in the military headquarters, his white, frizzy hair catching the morning light as he wandered the stone corridors with his digital book.

"He says he's a merchant, but he hasn't sold a single thing since we landed," Levi noted, watching Ken from a balcony.

"He saved Sasha, Levi," Mikasa countered softly. "Whatever he is, he's not our enemy."

The Headquarters Guest

For the next few days, Ken became a fixture at the Scout Headquarters. He didn't hide; he blended in. He spent his mornings in the library with Armin, showing him "maps" of the world that Armin had only ever dreamed of—maps that included continents far beyond Marley.

"Wait, Ken... you're saying there are oceans that stay frozen all year round?" Armin asked, leaning over the digital screen.

"Ice caps, Armin. And deserts where the sand is as white as snow," Ken replied, leaning back. "The world is much bigger than a single war."

In the afternoons, he could be found in the training yard, often "helping" Connie and Jean with their new gear. He showed them how to maintain the Steel-Reflection Armor, making sure they knew how to reinforce the kinetic plates.

"You're surprisingly good with tech for a merchant," Jean remarked, wiping sweat from his brow.

"In my country, if you can't fix your own tools, you don't survive the journey," Ken said with a wink

The morning of Ken's departure was unusually quiet. The sun had barely crested the walls of the Paradis Military Headquarters, casting long, golden shadows across the stone courtyard. Ken stood by the gates, no longer the "merchant" they had first met, but a figure of mystery who had fundamentally altered their fate.

The Scouts gathered around him, a rare moment of peace before the coming storm.

"So, the Wanderer moves on," Hange said, her voice unusually soft. She looked at Ken with genuine sadness. "You're really leaving us with all this unfinished tech?"

"You've got the blueprints, Hange. You don't need me anymore," Ken smiled, adjusting his digital book. "But I couldn't leave without paying my tab."

The Parting Gifts

Ken reached into his hoodie, pulling out a series of packages that seemed far too large to have been hidden there.

For Armin: He handed over a heavy, leather-bound atlas and a collection of ancient-looking journals. "These are maps of the lands beyond the sea—the ones Marley hasn't found yet. And those journals? They contain the history of the world before the Titans. You always wanted to know the truth, Armin. Here it is."For Sasha: Knowing her best, Ken handed her a large jar of "Special Spice Sauce" and a box of what looked like herbal sweets. "Sasha, the medicine I gave you is mixed into this sauce. It'll help your ribs heal faster, and it tastes better than anything in Marley. Just... try not to eat the whole jar in one sitting."Sasha hugged the jar to her chest like a child with a teddy bear, her eyes tearing up at the thought of "healing meat sauce."For Jean and Connie: He gave them refined whetstones and specialized oil for their gear. "Keep your blades sharp. The world is going to get a lot faster soon."

The Captain's Burden

Ken then turned to Levi, who was standing with his arms crossed, looking as stoic as ever.

"Captain," Ken said, stepping forward. He handed Levi a thick manual and a small, elegantly wrapped gift box. "The book contains martial arts techniques from my homeland—styles that don't rely on ODM gear. It might help when the fighting gets close."

Levi took the items with a short nod. "And the box?"

"Don't open that until I'm gone," Ken warned with a mischievous glint in his blue eyes. "Trust me."

The Promise to Mikasa

Finally, Ken called Mikasa aside. The others watched from a distance as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, wooden box. Inside was a strange, blocky device—a 1990s-model Pager with a glowing green screen.

"What is this?" Mikasa asked, turning the heavy object over in her hands.

"It's a calling device," Ken whispered. "I've linked it to my own frequency. Mikasa, I know the path ahead is dark. I know what Eren is planning. But listen to me: after everything is over—after the smoke clears and the world is at peace—press that button."

He leaned in closer, his voice full of a strange, warm certainty. "I'll know. And I promise, I will come back for the wedding. Yours and Eren's. I won't miss the happy ending I'm building for you."

Mikasa's eyes widened, a rare blush creeping onto her cheeks. She gripped the pager tight against her red scarf. "Thank you, Ken."

With a final wave and a flash of white static, Ken stepped toward the horizon. By the time the dust settled, he was gone, leaving nothing behind but the scent of salt and the sound of a closing book.

The Night of the Boots

That evening, the barracks were filled with the smell of Sasha's new sauce. The mood was lighter than it had been in years as the Scouts sat together, sharing the gifts Ken had left.

"He really was something else," Connie said, leaning back. "Do you think he was actually from another country?"

"Who cares?" Sasha mumbled through a mouthful of meat. "This sauce is a miracle from the Goddess herself."

Armin was already deep into his atlas, his eyes wide with wonder. "He gave us the whole world, guys. He gave us a reason to keep going."

Suddenly, Jean looked toward the corner where Levi sat silently. "Hey, Captain! Aren't you going to open the small box? Ken said you had to wait until he was gone."

Levi grunted, but curiosity finally won out. He untied the ribbon and lifted the lid. The entire room went silent for a heartbeat as Levi pulled out a pair of Custom Combat Boots with suspiciously thick, four-inch platforms.

At the bottom of the box was a small note in Ken's messy handwriting:

"Wear these next time, Captain. Maybe then you can finally look the Colossal Titan in the eye without a ladder. Stay tall, Shorty."

A collective gasp went through the room. Then, Sasha let out a snort. Then Connie. Within seconds, the entire Scout unit was roaring with laughter, clutching their sides as they looked at the "Elevator Boots."

Levi's face turned a shade of red that rivaled Mikasa's scarf. His grip tightened on the boots until the leather creaked.

"That brat..." Levi growled, his voice trembling with a mix of fury and a very hidden, very small trace of amusement. "I'm going to kill him. The next time I see him, I'm going to kick him into the next century with these damn boots!"

The barracks erupted into even louder laughter, the sound echoing through the night—a brief, beautiful moment of joy before the final chapter of their world began.
