Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 The Merchant of Secrets

Morning sunlight filtered through the tall windows of the Vale Estate library.

Dust drifted lazily through the golden light.

Elias Vale stood beside the window, quietly observing the distant countryside.

But his thoughts were not on the waking world.

They were on the Dream Market.

A hidden realm where occultists traded knowledge beyond the reach of ordinary society.

The implications were enormous.

Information was power.

And Elias had just gained access to a place where information flowed freely.

His fingers brushed lightly against the ring on his hand.

The Dream Anchor Ring.

The artifact pulsed faintly with dream energy.

A gateway to the Sea of Dreams.

Elias smiled faintly.

"This changes everything."

For years, Elias had survived through careful planning.

He built wealth quietly through trade.

Gathered knowledge through investigation.

But now…

Now he had access to something far more powerful.

A hidden network of occultists.

And more importantly—

Secrets.

Elias turned away from the window and walked back toward the desk at the center of the library.

Stacks of ledgers rested neatly on its surface.

Records of his merchant operations.

Import shipments.

Estate finances.

Trading routes.

To the outside world, Elias Vale was nothing more than a small nobleman trying to restore his declining house through commerce.

And in many ways, that was true.

But now…

He could turn his merchant network into something far greater.

A cover.

A web.

A system for gathering information.

Because merchants traveled everywhere.

They heard rumors.

Saw hidden dealings.

Witnessed secrets others ignored.

And if Elias positioned himself correctly…

Those secrets would flow directly to him.

Just like goods flowing through trade routes.

Elias opened one of the ledgers and began writing.

He titled the page simply.

Information Network.

Step one.

Recruit trustworthy intermediaries.

Step two.

Expand merchant routes to major cities.

Step three.

Create a system for collecting rumors and occult sightings.

Simple.

Efficient.

And extremely powerful.

Elias leaned back in his chair thoughtfully.

But there was another advantage he could exploit.

The Dream Market itself.

He could trade information there as well.

Sell knowledge.

Buy secrets.

Gather intelligence about hidden organizations.

Including the cult that had once captured him.

Elias's eyes darkened slightly.

He had not forgotten the ritual.

The pain.

The moment when his soul had been forced into contact with the ancient entity known as The Lucid One.

The cult had intended to sacrifice him.

Instead…

They had created something else entirely.

Elias closed the ledger calmly.

Revenge could wait.

Power came first.

A knock echoed softly from the library door.

Elias looked up.

"Enter."

The door opened slowly.

An elderly man stepped inside.

His hair was silver and his posture slightly bent with age.

But his eyes remained sharp.

"Master Elias," the old man said politely.

"You requested the monthly estate reports."

Elias nodded.

"Thank you, Thomas."

Thomas had served the Vale family for decades.

He had been the estate steward even during the final years of Elias's parents.

One of the few loyal servants who remained after the noble house began declining.

Thomas placed several documents on the desk.

"Our latest trade shipments arrived safely in Westbridge."

"That's good."

"But there is another matter."

Elias glanced up.

"What is it?"

Thomas hesitated slightly.

"There have been rumors spreading in the nearby towns."

"Rumors?"

"Yes."

The steward lowered his voice.

"People have reported strange dreams."

Elias's expression remained calm.

But his mind sharpened immediately.

"What kind of dreams?"

"Identical ones."

"Identical?"

"Yes."

Thomas nodded.

"Several people claim they saw the same thing."

"And what was that?"

The old man hesitated again before answering.

"A vast pair of eyes… watching them from the sky."

Silence filled the library.

Elias's fingers tapped lightly against the desk.

The description was unmistakable.

He had seen those same eyes in the dream sea.

Eyes that belonged to something ancient.

Something far beyond human comprehension.

The presence of The Lucid One.

Elias slowly stood.

"How many people reported these dreams?"

"Dozens."

"And where?"

"In several villages surrounding the estate."

Elias walked toward the window again.

This was unexpected.

The Lucid One rarely interacted with the waking world directly.

Its influence usually manifested subtly through dreams and illusions.

But this…

This sounded different.

Almost like a ripple spreading outward.

"Has the church heard these rumors?" Elias asked.

"I believe so."

Thomas nodded.

"A priest from the city arrived yesterday to investigate."

Elias's eyes narrowed slightly.

Which church?

If it was the wrong one…

Things could become complicated.

"What is the priest's name?"

Thomas consulted a small notebook.

"Father Aldric."

Elias recognized the name immediately.

A member of the Veiled Church.

An organization dedicated to suppressing occult threats.

Dangerous people.

Very dangerous.

Elias turned slowly.

"Where is this priest now?"

"He is staying in the town of Greyhaven."

The closest settlement to the Vale Estate.

Only a few hours away.

Elias smiled faintly.

Perfect.

If the church was investigating the dream disturbances…

Then they might also be searching for the artifact that caused them.

Which meant Elias needed to act carefully.

Extremely carefully.

"Thomas."

"Yes, Master?"

"Prepare my carriage."

The old steward blinked.

"You're traveling today?"

"Yes."

"Where to?"

Elias adjusted his coat calmly.

"To Greyhaven."

Thomas hesitated slightly.

"May I ask why?"

Elias smiled politely.

"A merchant must maintain good relations with nearby towns."

The explanation sounded completely reasonable.

Thomas nodded.

"Very well."

"I will prepare everything immediately."

As the old man left the library, Elias returned to his desk.

His mind moved rapidly.

This situation presented both danger…

And opportunity.

If the church suspected the Lucid One's influence…

They would begin searching for its source.

Eventually they might reach the Vale Estate.

That could not happen.

But if Elias played this correctly…

He could manipulate the investigation.

Feed them false information.

Redirect their attention somewhere else.

After all…

A good illusion did not simply hide the truth.

It replaced it.

Elias picked up a small black notebook and slipped it into his coat.

His personal investigation journal.

Then he walked toward the library door.

"Greyhaven," he murmured softly.

The game was beginning to move faster.

And Elias intended to stay several steps ahead of everyone else.

Including the church.

Because in a world ruled by hidden powers and ancient gods…

The one who controlled information…

Controlled everything.

Outside, the carriage wheels began rolling across the gravel road.

Carrying Elias Vale toward his next move in the growing game of shadows.

And far beyond the waking world—

Within the endless Sea of Dreams—

Something ancient stirred.

Watching.

Waiting.

The Sleeper had begun to act.

And the world would soon begin to change.
