A Novel Based on World War II
Final Chapter: The Fall of Berlin
By early 1945, the war in Europe was nearing its end. The armies of the Allies were closing in on Germany from every side.
From the east, the powerful army of the Soviet Union advanced toward the German capital, Berlin. From the west, forces from the United States and the United Kingdom were pushing deeper into German territory.
The once powerful empire built by Adolf Hitler was collapsing.
In April 1945, the Soviet army surrounded Berlin. The battle that followed was fierce and destructive. Tanks rolled through broken streets while soldiers fought among destroyed buildings.
Civilians hid in basements, hoping the nightmare would end soon.
Inside an underground bunker beneath the city, Adolf Hitler realized that defeat was unavoidable. The Allied armies were too strong, and Germany could no longer continue the war.
On April 30, 1945, Hitler took his own life.
Soon after, Germany officially surrendered. The long and terrible conflict in Europe finally came to an end.
But the war was not completely over yet.
In the Pacific, fighting continued between the United States and Japan.
Then, in August 1945, two powerful atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The destruction was unimaginable.
Soon after, Japan surrendered, bringing World War II to its final end.
The war had lasted six years and had taken millions of lives.
Cities were destroyed. Families were separated. Nations were changed forever.
But from the ashes of war, the world slowly began to rebuild.
And people everywhere hoped that such a terrible conflict would never happen again.
