The Third Road did not rise.
It descended.
A vast stone ramp spiraled downward into darkness, disappearing into a chasm so deep that even enhanced vision struggled to see the bottom. Moisture coated every surface. Moss covered the ancient stonework, its veins pulsing faintly like a living circulatory system buried beneath the earth.
The deeper the army traveled, the heavier the air became.
Rot.
Decay.
Ancient magic.
All of it lingered in the darkness.
Water dripped endlessly from unseen heights above.
Each drop echoed through the abyss.
A slow.
Relentless.
Countdown.
At the head of the column walked Tigre, the Beast King.
Broad-shouldered and bare-armed, he looked more like a predator than a man. Countless scars covered his body, each one carrying a story nobody dared ask him to tell.
His amber eyes gleamed in the darkness.
Sharp.
Feral.
Alert.
Every sense stretched far beyond human limitations.
Beside him floated Lucy, the Fallen Angel.
Her blackened wings remained folded tightly behind her.
Scorched feathers shifted occasionally in the stale air.
Though damaged, every subtle movement bent the atmosphere around her with restrained power.
Her expression was distant.
Unreadable.
As if she were mourning something that had not yet happened.
Bringing up the rear of the vanguard was Hades, the Necro Warden.
He carried a staff carved from bone and obsidian.
Embedded skulls lined its length.
Their jaws moved constantly, whispering secrets only they could hear.
Shadows clung unnaturally to his robes.
And wherever his boots touched the stone floor, spectral hands briefly reached upward before sinking back into darkness.
Behind them marched what remained of the Third Road strike force.
Barely two-thirds of the army that had begun the descent.
The rest had been claimed by the road itself.
Collapsing stairways.
Flooded corridors.
Bottomless pits.
Ancient traps that animated the dead and forced comrades to kill those they had once marched beside.
The Sunken Way demanded sacrifice.
And it had collected heavily.
At the bottom of the descent stood the castle.
Half submerged within a vast underground lake.
Its walls rose from black water like the ruins of a drowned kingdom.
Massive towers pierced the cavern ceiling.
Chains thicker than tree trunks wrapped around the fortress, disappearing into unseen depths below.
They looked less like anchors.
And more like restraints.
As though something beneath the water was trying to drag the entire castle away.
The gates groaned open.
From within came laughter.
Deep.
Guttural.
Amused.
The sound echoed across the subterranean lake.
Then he emerged.
Kimaris.
The Lord of the Drowned.
The Demon Lord strode onto the flooded causeway.
Even among demons, he was enormous.
Corroded armor covered his massive frame, fused directly into flesh. Rusted blades protruded from his shoulders and arms. Barnacles clung to metal and skin alike.
Wet black hair draped over his shoulders.
Beneath a helm shaped like a snarling leviathan, sickly green eyes glowed with predatory amusement.
Behind him came five Dark Berserkers.
Each one resembled a walking siege engine.
Towering.
Monstrous.
Wrapped in jagged armor.
Black ichor dripped from beneath their plating.
Heavy chains rattled behind them as they moved.
Weapons dragged furrows through stone.
Kimaris spread his arms.
His grin widened.
"So many corpses."
His voice rolled through the cavern like distant thunder.
"You've brought gifts."
Tigre cracked his neck.
The sound echoed sharply.
"Try not to choke on them."
Kimaris laughed.
Then the battle began.
There was no signal.
No warning.
No speeches.
Tigre launched himself forward.
The causeway exploded beneath his feet.
Bones shifted.
Muscles expanded.
His body transformed mid-charge.
Neither fully human nor fully beast.
Something in between.
Something far more dangerous.
He collided with the nearest Dark Berserker like a falling meteor.
Armor tore apart beneath his claws.
Metal screamed.
The demon staggered backward.
Lucy ascended.
Her black wings unfurled completely.
For a brief moment she appeared like a fallen goddess suspended above the battlefield.
She raised one hand.
A spear of condensed void-light materialized.
Then plunged downward.
The attack pierced a Dark Berserker's chest and pinned the massive demon directly to the stone causeway.
Hades struck his staff against the ground.
The lake boiled.
Water churned violently.
Then the dead rose.
Corpses emerged from beneath the black depths.
Human.
Demon.
It no longer mattered.
Eyes glowed pale blue.
Bodies stitched themselves together through necromantic force.
The undead surged forward in a relentless tide.
Clawing.
Grasping.
Dragging demons toward the water.
Behind them, the human army roared.
Then charged.
Steel met flesh.
Magic detonated.
The cavern shook.
The battle for the Sunken Castle had begun.
For a time—
A glorious, fragile time—
Humanity advanced.
Tigre became a monster among monsters.
He tore through two Dark Berserkers in brutal succession.
One lost an arm.
Tigre ripped it free completely.
Then used the severed limb as a club to batter another Berserker into the lake.
The impact sent waves crashing against the fortress walls.
Above, Lucy dueled Kimaris.
Black wings against corroded steel.
Her blade carved silver arcs through the darkness.
His leviathan greatsword answered with crushing force.
Every collision sent showers of sparks hissing into the water below.
Meanwhile, Hades transformed the battlefield.
Walls of bone erupted from the ground.
Ghostly warriors shielded advancing soldiers.
Every fallen body became reinforcement.
His undead army swelled continuously.
Human.
Demon.
The dead served equally.
For the first time since entering the Third Road, victory seemed possible.
Kimaris roared as Lucy's blade sliced across his torso.
A deep wound opened.
Black blood splashed across the flooded causeway.
"Is that all?" Lucy asked coldly.
The Demon Lord staggered.
And for the first time—
Doubt crossed his face.
The Dark Berserkers were nearly gone.
The human army had reached the castle gates.
The fortress itself trembled beneath the assault.
Victory felt real.
Costly.
Bloody.
But real.
Then—
The water rippled.
Not from battle.
Not from movement.
Something else.
Something wrong.
The entire battlefield seemed to pause.
A slow clap echoed across the cavern.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Everyone turned.
A man stood atop a broken statue overlooking the battlefield.
A tattered coat fluttered around him.
Madness gleamed in his eyes.
Satoshi.
The Monster Trainer.
He smiled brightly.
Almost cheerfully.
"Well done."
His applause continued.
"Truly inspiring."
Tigre froze.
Lucy's eyes widened.
Hades felt dread crawl down his spine.
Cold.
Instant.
Absolute.
"Satoshi."
Lucy's voice carried pure disbelief.
"You—"
"Ah, ah."
Satoshi raised a finger.
Then snapped.
The lake erupted.
Three colossal shapes rose from the darkness.
An Abyssal Hydra.
Its countless heads screamed simultaneously.
Corrosive venom dripped from its fangs, hissing where it touched stone.
A Grave Colossus.
A towering giant stitched together from hundreds of corpses.
Runes glowed across its flesh.
Every movement sounded like mass graves grinding together.
And finally—
A Void Roc.
Its wings stretched across much of the cavern.
Reality tore wherever its feathers passed.
Dark cracks opened in the air itself.
Silence fell.
Then horror followed.
S-ranked monsters.
Three of them.
Controlled.
Kimaris threw back his head and laughed.
"Traitor."
The Demon Lord sounded genuinely pleased.
"You've brought reinforcements."
Satoshi bowed theatrically.
"Anything for survival."
The battlefield collapsed instantly.
The Hydra charged first.
Venom flooded the frontlines.
Armor dissolved.
Flesh melted.
Entire squads vanished beneath waves of corrosive death.
The Grave Colossus followed.
Every step crushed soldiers.
Every corpse it claimed became part of its body.
It grew larger with every casualty.
The Void Roc descended upon Lucy.
Reality-distorting screams blasted through the cavern.
Lucy was forced backward.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Tigre fought like a cornered god.
He tore chunks from the Colossus.
Ripped bodies free.
Destroyed entire sections of its torso.
Yet the monster regenerated faster than he could dismantle it.
Hades screamed in fury.
The Hydra's breath washed across the battlefield.
His undead army evaporated.
Necromantic connections snapped one after another.
Thousands of souls vanished.
His greatest weapon disappeared in seconds.
The human lines shattered.
Hundreds died.
Then thousands.
Some dropped their weapons.
Others ran.
Many simply screamed.
The battle was lost.
Kimaris advanced through the carnage.
His massive blade rose and fell.
Every swing claimed lives.
Every step crushed hope.
"Surrender!"
His roar echoed across the cavern.
"Or drown!"
Dozens obeyed.
Weapons fell.
Hands rose.
Heads bowed.
Those who refused—
Died.
By the time the fighting ended, the Sunken Way had become a graveyard.
Bodies floated in black water.
Broken weapons drifted between them.
Blood spread across the underground lake like a crimson stain.
Most of the human army was dead.
Others had scattered into darkness.
Only a few dozen survivors remained.
Kneeling.
Bound in chains.
Broken.
Tigre knelt on one knee.
Blood covered his body.
Even he could barely remain standing.
Lucy hovered unsteadily nearby.
One wing hung torn and damaged.
Every breath looked painful.
Hades leaned heavily upon his staff.
Around him remained only silence.
The dead no longer answered.
Satoshi stepped forward.
Smiling.
He wiped blood from his cheek casually.
"Such a shame."
His voice remained light.
"You were so close."
Tigre glared at him.
If hatred could kill, Satoshi would have died a thousand times.
Kimaris planted his massive blade into the stone.
The sound echoed across the cavern.
"Take the prisoners."
His gaze swept across the survivors.
"Let Luxuria decide their fate."
Chains rattled.
The remaining captives were dragged away.
The castle gates began to close.
Slowly.
Inevitably.
The Third Road was lost.
Far above, within a palace of silk and shadows, Luxuria watched through her mirrors.
The defeat unfolded before her eyes.
The betrayal.
The slaughter.
The prisoners.
The collapse of humanity's advance.
For the first time since the invasion began, genuine satisfaction appeared upon her face.
A slow smile.
A dangerous smile.
Two roads had been lost.
One road had fallen.
Humanity was bleeding.
And now they understood something important.
Victory was not guaranteed.
The Succubus Queen leaned back upon her throne.
The mirrors reflected death and despair.
Her favorite things.
"The war," Luxuria whispered softly,
"has finally begun."
And somewhere deep beneath the castle, hidden beyond the sight of both humans and demons, ancient chains stirred in the darkness.
Something listened.
Something waited.
And the coming battles would only grow bloodier.
