Chapter 7 - Chapter 7: The Night the City Bowed

Weeks passed.

Then months.

In the city, time moved differently.

Days blurred into nights, and nights into long stretches of neon lights, smoke, and whispered deals behind closed doors.

For Li Wei, the transformation happened quietly.

At first, people only knew him as the new man working under Chen Guoqiang.

Then they started hearing stories.

About the quiet man who broke Liu Jian's wrist.

About the fight at Red Lantern Bar where four men walked out defeated.

About the farmer who didn't fear knives.

Soon, his name began to travel through the darker corners of the district.

And the city remembered.

One rainy evening, the Golden Phoenix Nightclub was packed.

Music thundered across the dance floor. Businessmen toasted each other with expensive liquor while elegant hostesses laughed beside them.

But inside Chen Guoqiang's private office, the mood was serious.

Chen stood near the window, smoking slowly.

Across from him sat Zhang Qiang, Li Wei, and several other men.

A map of the district lay on the table.

Chen tapped a spot on it.

"This warehouse," he said.

"Belongs to the Black Tiger Gang."

The room grew quiet.

Everyone knew that name.

The Black Tiger Gang had recently moved into the neighboring district.

They were violent.

Ambitious.

And they wanted more territory.

"They attacked one of our transport trucks this morning," Chen continued calmly.

"They took the cargo."

Zhang Qiang frowned.

"That's a declaration of war."

Chen nodded.

"Yes."

He looked toward Li Wei.

"And tonight… we respond."

The warehouse stood near the docks.

Fog rolled in from the river, swallowing the streetlights and turning the entire area grey and silent.

Three black cars parked a short distance away.

Inside one of them, Li Wei sat quietly.

Zhang Qiang checked a pistol beside him.

"You nervous?" Zhang asked.

Li Wei shook his head.

"No."

Zhang smirked.

"Good."

He leaned back.

"First real gang fight."

Li Wei looked out the window.

Several men stood guard outside the warehouse.

More shadows moved inside.

"They outnumber us," Li Wei said.

Zhang shrugged.

"Probably."

Then he grinned.

"But they don't expect us."

The car doors opened.

Cold fog wrapped around them as they stepped out.

Chen Guoqiang walked in front, his coat moving slightly in the wind.

The guards noticed them immediately.

"Stop right there!"

One of them reached for his weapon.

But Zhang Qiang was faster.

The first punch dropped the man instantly.

Chaos erupted.

Men rushed out of the warehouse shouting.

The fight exploded into the fog.

Metal pipes clanged.

Fists slammed into flesh.

Someone fired a gun into the air.

Li Wei found himself facing a tall man with a chain wrapped around his fist.

The man swung.

Li Wei stepped aside and drove his elbow into the man's ribs.

The chain clattered to the ground.

Another attacker rushed him.

Li Wei grabbed a wooden crate and smashed it against the man's head.

Wood splintered.

The man collapsed.

Shouts echoed everywhere.

In the middle of the chaos, Li Wei saw the leader of the Black Tiger Gang.

A heavy-built man with a shaved head.

The man pointed at Li Wei.

"Take him down!"

Two men rushed forward.

Li Wei moved quickly.

His fist struck the first man's throat.

The second tried to tackle him, but Li Wei slammed his knee into the attacker's stomach.

The man crumpled.

The leader stared at him with growing anger.

Then he pulled out a knife.

They circled each other slowly.

Rain began to fall again.

Droplets hit the metal roof of the warehouse.

The leader lunged forward.

The blade flashed in the dim light.

But Li Wei caught his wrist.

Hard.

The two men struggled for control.

The leader was strong.

But Li Wei was faster.

He twisted the man's arm sharply.

The knife fell.

Then Li Wei drove his fist into the man's face.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

The leader collapsed into the mud.

The fight around them slowly stopped.

Men from the Black Tiger Gang backed away.

Breathing heavily.

Defeated.

Zhang Qiang laughed loudly.

"Looks like the tiger lost its claws!"

Chen Guoqiang stepped forward calmly.

He looked down at the unconscious leader.

Then he turned toward the remaining men.

"Tell anyone who asks," Chen said quietly.

"This district is not for sale."

The defeated gang members quickly dragged their leader away.

Within minutes, the warehouse fell silent again.

Fog swallowed the street once more.

Later that night, inside Golden Phoenix, Zhang Qiang poured drinks for everyone.

The mood was victorious.

"Tonight was beautiful," Zhang said happily.

Several men laughed.

Chen raised his glass slightly.

But his eyes rested on Li Wei.

"Do you understand what happened tonight?" Chen asked.

Li Wei looked at him.

Chen spoke slowly.

"Tonight, the city learned something important."

He paused.

"It learned that Li Wei is not just another man in my gang."

The room grew quiet.

Chen lifted his glass.

"He's becoming someone people will remember."

The men raised their drinks.

"To Li Wei!"

Li Wei didn't smile.

He only stared into his glass.

Because deep inside, he could feel the change.

The village man he once was had nearly disappeared.

The city had reshaped him.

Forged him.

And somewhere far away in Qingshan Village, a woman still waited by the window some nights.

Looking down the same muddy road.

Hoping one day she would see her husband return.

But the man she remembered…

Was no longer the man the city was creating.
