Chapter 4 - Chapter :- 2 The Weight of Small Decisions

Chapter Two

The Weight of Small Decisions

The city felt quieter than it should.

Not empty.

Not silent.

Just… missing something.

Kai walked a step behind her.

Not intentionally.

It just happened that way.

She stopped near a crossing and looked around, like she was trying to map something invisible.

"Where do we go next?" she asked.

The question came naturally.

Like he should have an answer.

Kai looked ahead.

Left.

Right.

Forward.

All directions felt the same.

He could say anything.

So he chose carefully.

"Let's check the main road first," he said.

It sounded reasonable.

Logical.

Like something a person in control would say.

She nodded.

"Okay."

No hesitation.

That made it heavier.

They started walking again.

A few minutes passed before she spoke again.

"We should probably split things," she said.

"Like… responsibilities."

Kai glanced at her.

"What do you mean?"

"You decide direction," she said.

"I'll keep track of places we've already checked."

It was simple.

Efficient.

And suddenly—

real.

Kai nodded.

"Yeah. That works."

It didn't matter if it actually worked.

It sounded like it should.

That was enough.

They walked through another street.

Shops closed. Roads empty. No movement anywhere.

It didn't feel abandoned.

It felt… paused.

She stopped again.

"Maybe we shouldn't go too far," she said.

"If we get lost, it'll be harder to come back."

Kai thought for a second.

Then said,

"We should keep moving."

She frowned slightly.

"Why?"

The question was small.

But it stayed.

Kai answered quickly.

"If we stop too early, we might miss something."

That sounded right.

But even as he said it—

he adjusted.

"We can come back later," he added.

"After we check more areas."

His tone softened.

Less certain.

More flexible.

She looked at him for a moment.

Then said:

"You changed your mind fast."

Kai paused.

Just slightly.

"I didn't change it," he said.

But the words didn't feel solid.

She didn't argue.

Just nodded.

"Okay."

They kept walking.

The decisions didn't stop.

Left or right.

Go inside or move on.

Keep searching or take a break.

Each one small.

Each one his.

And every time—

he chose based on something else.

Not instinct.

Not preference.

Expectation.

What would sound right.

What would feel correct.

What she would agree with.

It worked.

But it didn't feel like choosing.

It felt like adjusting.

By the time evening settled in, the light had changed.

The city looked colder now.

They stopped near a small building.

"Let's stay here for a bit," she said.

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

Inside, it was quiet.

Still.

Safe enough.

She sat down first.

Kai moved toward a sink nearby.

There was a small amount of water left.

He turned it on.

Slow.

Unsteady flow.

He cupped his hands and splashed his face.

Cold.

Real.

For a moment, he just stood there.

Then he looked up.

At his reflection.

It was faint.

Distorted by the old glass.

But it was enough.

His face looked… neutral.

Or at least, it was supposed to.

He tried to hold it there.

Still.

Unmoving.

Then he imagined something.

Her looking at him.

The expression shifted.

Slightly.

Softer.

Less distant.

He adjusted again.

Back to neutral.

Then imagined something else.

A different version.

It changed again.

Not much.

But enough.

Kai stared at it.

Tried to hold one version.

Just one.

It didn't stay.

After a few seconds, he looked away.

Turned off the water.

Walked back.

She glanced at him.

"You okay?"

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

He sat down across from her.

The distance between them felt measured.

Not too close.

Not too far.

"Tomorrow," she said,

"we should plan better."

Kai nodded again.

"Yeah."

Plan.

Decide.

Choose.

The words felt heavier now.

Because there was no one else to do it.

And no way to avoid it.

For the first time—

Kai realized something simple.

He couldn't stay in the background anymore.

Not here.

Not like this.

And the part that unsettled him the most—was that he didn't know how to be anything else.
