Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: A Terrible Night

In Sunny's field of vision, a Caterpie cautiously poked its head out from the bushes.

It was about 0.2 meters long, and judging by its size, it had probably only hatched recently. Perhaps it had been frightened by predators during the day and decided to come out at night to fill its stomach.

Sunny's heart pounded as he stared at the forest floor.

Somewhere nearby, a hidden hunter must already be celebrating.

The Caterpie carefully looked around first. After confirming there was no obvious danger, it climbed onto a small bush and began eating the sweet leaves.

Even while eating, it kept probing the surroundings with the antennae on its head.

But how long could a newborn bug maintain that level of vigilance?

Although Pokémon possessed intelligence, wild Pokémon in the jungle were far more driven by instinct.

Their intelligence grew gradually with age.

Sure enough, the Caterpie soon lost its patience.

Seeing that nothing had attacked for so long, it began munching on the leaves happily.

Minute by minute, time passed.

Eventually, the Caterpie completely relaxed its guard.

Its little body quickly grew bloated from eating.

"It's coming…"

Sunny whispered under his breath, staring intently at the scene below.

From somewhere in the dark forest came a faint sound.

But the Caterpie didn't notice at all.

On a quiet summer night, even the slightest movement should have stood out.

Yet at that moment, a gentle breeze drifted through the forest, brushing lightly across the Caterpie's body.

Instead of becoming alert, the Caterpie only seemed more comfortable.

It continued eating even more happily.

Sunny was speechless.

This is basically asking to be eaten.

Then—

A cloud of fine powder suddenly appeared in the air around the Caterpie, carried by the breeze.

By the time the Caterpie realized something was wrong, it was already too late.

All it could do was watch helplessly as the hunter emerged from the darkness.

A large moth Pokémon flew out from the bushes.

"It's Venomoth!"

As Sunny stared at the Venomoth, text suddenly appeared in his vision.

---

"Oh right…"

Sunny suddenly remembered.

"I added a Pokémon identification function to the game too."

Even though the system was simple, it was more than enough for now.

Still…

He had a habit of digging his own grave.

Sunny glanced back at the Caterpie's data.

---

Sunny fell silent.

It really was weak.

Even the Pokédex description was so brief it barely said anything—though its aptitude wasn't bad.

"But it actually has a Hidden Ability too?"

Sunny felt surprised.

Weren't Hidden Abilities supposed to be extremely rare?

Why did a random Caterpie have one too?

For a moment, Sunny felt like his own Hidden Ability wasn't so special anymore.

Then he suddenly realized something.

"Wait…"

If you asked which Pokémon were the most numerous in the world, the answer would probably be Caterpie.

Followed closely by Weedle.

With such massive populations, even a tiny probability could produce many Hidden Ability individuals.

Thinking about it like that…

It made sense.

But would this Caterpie with a Hidden Ability escape Venomoth's attack?

The answer appeared immediately.

The Caterpie had already been covered in Venomoth's scales, its body stiff and completely motionless.

Sunny shivered.

The Run Away Ability wasn't foolproof.

There were many ways to kill someone before they even had a chance to escape.

Just as Venomoth flew forward to finish its prey with its jaws—

A yellow blur suddenly shot forward.

"Raticate?!"

Sunny was stunned.

This was truly a case of the mantis stalking the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind.

The night was far more dangerous than he imagined.

The Raticate's speed was terrifying.

Before Venomoth could even react, the rodent Pokémon had already bitten into its abdomen.

It seemed extremely experienced.

Instead of attacking the wings—which were covered in poisonous scales—it went straight for the abdomen.

Its sharp teeth tore through Venomoth's fuzzy body.

Sunny suddenly understood something.

"Was that Quick Attack followed by Bite?"

Otherwise, Venomoth wouldn't have been caught so completely off guard.

But before Sunny's information panel could appear—

Another purple shadow slid across the ground.

In an instant, it struck.

Its fangs sank into the Raticate, purple venom dripping from its teeth.

"…What?!"

"Arbok?!"

Sunny was completely stunned.

The Pokémon hiding in the darkness were all incredibly patient—and incredibly cunning.

Was this what life was like for Pokémon that grew up in the wild?

Sunny suddenly felt like the cute Pokémon he remembered from cities and trainers couldn't compare to the ruthless creatures of the forest.

"This night is way too dangerous…"

Sunny nervously chewed on a leaf to calm himself.

Fortunately, he was high up in the tree.

They couldn't detect him.

Right now, he had to praise his earlier decision to build the leaf fortress.

Having a safe hiding place at night was absolutely critical.

Below him, Arbok first injected venom into the Raticate.

Then it bit into Venomoth.

Under the spreading poison, both Pokémon gradually stopped struggling.

Their movements grew weaker and weaker.

Meanwhile, the Caterpie lay forgotten.

It was far too small to interest Arbok.

But just as Arbok was about to swallow its prey—

The sound of flapping wings suddenly came from above.

Arbok's body stiffened.

Without hesitation, it grabbed the Raticate in its jaws and dragged it into the grass, disappearing into the darkness.

It abandoned Venomoth's corpse.

Partly because it was too large to drag away.

And partly because Venomoth's wings were covered in Poison Powder.

Even for a Poison-type Pokémon like Arbok, eating it might still be dangerous.

Sunny watched in horror.

A group of bats descended from the sky.

They were entirely blue, with massive mouths that almost covered their entire bodies.

Four sharp fangs protruded from their jaws.

They looked terrifying.

"Golbat!!"

These Pokémon were similar to vampire bats, feeding on the blood of humans or Pokémon.

Worst of all—

They hunted in groups.

"What a terrifying night…"

Sunny felt a bit cowardly.

He made a firm decision right then and there.

He would never wander around at night again.
