Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 The Healer’s Lodge

Morning had fully settled over Nightfall by the time Raven left the training grounds.

The valley looked different in daylight than it had under the Blood Moon. Sunlight poured through the towering pines surrounding the territory, scattering golden light across rooftops, stone paths, and the open training fields. The forest canopy above filtered the brightness into shifting patterns that danced along the ground whenever the wind stirred the branches.

Nightfall felt alive.

Wolves moved throughout the settlement with quiet purpose. Some carried bundles of supplies between buildings while others walked in small groups, their voices low as they spoke through the pack's mindlink.

It was a rhythm Raven wasn't used to yet.

Silverfang had always been smaller.

More personal.

Everyone knew everyone.

Here… there were dozens of wolves she had never seen before.

Maybe more.

As Raven followed the stone path toward the medical lodge, she caught the scent of herbs drifting faintly through the air. The smell grew stronger as the path curved around a cluster of buildings and opened into a quieter corner of the territory.

The healer's lodge stood apart from the rest of the settlement.

The structure was large, though not as massive as the Alpha lodge. Its wide windows allowed sunlight to spill across the polished wooden floors inside, and shelves filled with jars and supplies lined the walls.

The scent of antiseptic mixed with herbs filled the air.

Raven stepped inside.

Jarek was sitting upright on one of the beds near the far wall.

The moment he saw her, his grin appeared.

"Well," he said, spreading his arms slightly, "look who finally decided to visit."

Raven crossed the room.

"I heard you were stabbed and thought I should confirm you weren't exaggerating."

Jarek placed a hand over his chest dramatically.

"You wound me."

"You survived Ironclaw," Raven said dryly. "You'll survive my sarcasm."

Mira stood nearby sorting supplies across a wooden counter.

"The healers say he'll be fine," she added.

Jarek gestured toward the bandages wrapped around his ribs.

"Apparently Nightfall healers are miracle workers."

"Or you're just too stubborn to die," Mira replied.

Jarek considered that.

"Also possible."

Raven pulled a chair closer and sat down.

Despite his humor, she could see the strain behind Jarek's expression. The wound had clearly taken a toll on him.

"Are they making you rest?" she asked.

"For a few days," he said.

"That must be torture."

"It is."

A soft knock sounded at the open doorway.

Raven turned.

A woman stepped inside.

Her dark hair was streaked with silver, and calm intelligence shone in her eyes.

"My name is Elena," she said warmly. "I oversee the healers here in Nightfall."

Mira nodded politely.

"Thank you for taking care of him."

Elena glanced toward Jarek.

"He'll recover quickly. Wolves heal fast when they're properly treated."

Jarek lifted a finger.

"See? Miracle workers."

Elena smiled faintly.

"Or stubborn patients."

She turned her attention to Raven.

"You must be Raven."

Raven blinked slightly.

"Yes."

"Elena said the Alpha asked us to make sure all of you received proper care while you're here."

Raven exchanged a quick glance with Mira.

"Alpha Marcel did that?"

Elena nodded.

"He made it very clear."

Raven wasn't sure how to feel about that.

When Raven stepped outside the healer's lodge a short time later, the afternoon sun had climbed high over the valley.

The settlement buzzed with activity again.

She had barely taken a few steps down the path when a familiar voice called out.

"Well, if it isn't Nightfall's newest legend."

Raven turned.

Claude approached with that same easy smile he had worn at the training grounds earlier.

"Legend?" Raven asked.

Claude nodded.

"Throwing Lucas across the sparring ring has become the most popular story in the territory."

Raven groaned slightly.

"Wonderful."

Claude chuckled.

"Don't worry. Lucas is taking it well."

"I'm sure he is."

Claude fell into step beside her.

"You settling in alright?"

"As much as someone can settle in after their entire pack is wiped out."

Claude's smile faded slightly.

"That was… blunt."

"You asked."

Claude nodded slowly.

"Fair enough."

They walked a few steps in silence before Claude spoke again.

"For what it's worth," he said, "Nightfall doesn't take guests lightly."

"What do you mean?"

"You and your friends being allowed here means Marcel sees value in you."

Raven frowned slightly.

"I doubt that."

Claude glanced at her sideways.

"You might be surprised."

They reached a small courtyard near the main lodge.

Raven slowed.

Someone stood there.

Marcel.

He had been speaking with another warrior moments earlier, but the conversation ended quickly when Raven and Claude approached.

The other wolf nodded respectfully to the Alpha and walked away.

Leaving them alone.

Raven suddenly felt nervous.

Claude noticed the shift immediately.

His smile returned.

"Alpha Marcel," he said politely.

Marcel nodded.

"Claude."

His dark gaze shifted toward Raven.

For a moment neither of them spoke.

Raven felt that strange warmth again.

It started in her chest.

Then slowly spread downward.

Her wolf stirred.

Marcel felt it too.

The pull.

Stronger now.

His wolf surged against his control.

Mate.

The word echoed through his instincts again.

Mine.

But Raven still showed no sign of reacting.

No tension.

No awareness.

She simply stood there looking slightly nervous beneath his gaze.

Marcel frowned inwardly.

That made no sense.

"Your friend is recovering well," Marcel said calmly.

Raven nodded.

"Yes. The healers said he should be back on his feet soon."

"I'm glad."

Claude crossed his arms casually.

"I was just explaining how famous Raven has become after humiliating Lucas."

Marcel's eyebrow lifted slightly.

"Humiliating?"

Claude grinned.

"She threw him."

Marcel's gaze returned to Raven.

"I heard."

Raven suddenly felt very aware of how tall he was standing in front of her.

He towered over her.

His shoulders were broad enough to cast a shadow across the stone path.

And up close…

He looked even larger than she remembered.

Her heart beat slightly faster.

Marcel noticed.

His wolf pushed harder against his control.

Mine.

But Raven simply shifted awkwardly under the attention.

Completely unaware.

Claude glanced between them.

Something about the tension amused him.

"Well," he said lightly, "I should probably let you two continue this fascinating staring contest."

He gave Raven a playful wink before walking away.

Raven felt heat rise in her cheeks.

Marcel watched Claude leave.

His wolf growled quietly.

Possessive.

When Marcel turned back to Raven, the tension between them had thickened.

"You're adjusting quickly," he said.

"I'm trying."

Nightfall's Alpha studied her carefully.

"You don't seem intimidated."

Raven shrugged.

"Should I be?"

Marcel almost smiled.

"Most wolves are."

Raven considered that.

Then she said quietly,

"You've given us sanctuary."

"Yes."

"That makes you someone I should respect."

Marcel held her gaze.

"You already do."

Their eyes lingered a moment longer than necessary.

Then Raven finally broke the silence.

"I should go."

Marcel nodded once.

"Raven."

She paused.

"Yes?"

"If you need anything while you're here, speak with Marcus."

"I will."

Raven walked away.

Marcel watched her go.

His wolf still restless beneath his skin.

Mate.

And the mystery only deepened.

Across the courtyard, Tomas had watched the entire exchange.

His expression darkened slightly.

He had seen that look before.

The look powerful wolves got when they discovered something they wanted.

And Tomas had already lost too much.

If Raven was about to become the center of a battle between powerful wolves…

He would make sure she survived it.
