Chapter 2 - the Watching Shadows

nd of the snapping branch echoed through the jungle like a gunshot.

Everyone froze.

Kareem slowly turned around, his heart beating faster than before. The dense forest behind them looked the same as it had a moment ago thick trees, hanging vines, and shadows stretching across the ground.

But the feeling was different.

Someone was there.

Marcus quietly raised his machete and whispered, "Stay close."

Lena gripped her camera tightly. Daniel held his tablet but his hands were slightly shaking.

"Maybe it's just an animal," Daniel said, trying to sound confident.

Marcus shook his head.

"Animals don't move like that."

The jungle fell silent again.

No wind.

No insects.

No birds.

It felt as if the entire forest was holding its breath.

Kareem stepped slowly toward the direction where the sound had come from.

"Wait," Lena whispered. "You're not seriously going to check that out, are you?"

"We need to know if someone is following us," Kareem replied.

Marcus moved beside him. "I'll go with you."

The two men pushed gently through the bushes while Lena and Daniel waited behind them.

Leaves brushed against Kareem's arms as he walked forward. The deeper he stepped into the shadows, the harder it became to see clearly.

Then Marcus stopped suddenly.

"What is it?" Kareem asked quietly.

Marcus pointed toward the ground.

More footprints.

Fresh ones.

Kareem knelt down to look closer.

The prints were deeper this time, as if whoever made them had been running.

But something else caught his attention.

They were barefoot.

"Who walks through a jungle like this without shoes?" Kareem muttered.

Marcus didn't answer.

He was staring into the trees ahead.

Kareem followed his gaze.

For a brief moment, something moved between the trunks.

A dark shape.

Too fast to recognize.

Marcus stepped forward quickly, but when they reached the spot, there was nothing there.

Only thick bushes and tangled vines.

Kareem frowned.

"I saw it too," Marcus said quietly.

Back on the trail, Lena was nervously scanning the jungle with her camera.

"Did you find anything?" she asked when they returned.

"Footprints," Kareem said.

Daniel sighed.

"Okay, that's getting weird."

"Not just footprints," Marcus added. "Barefoot prints."

Daniel looked confused.

"That makes no sense. Nobody lives in a jungle this deep."

Marcus crossed his arms.

"Exactly."

The group stood in silence for a moment.

Finally, Kareem unfolded the old map again.

"We can't turn back now," he said. "The ruins are somewhere ahead."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"You're telling me someone else is already here, leaving creepy barefoot footprints, and you still want to continue?"

Kareem looked at him seriously.

"We came this far."

Lena nodded slowly.

"I didn't come all the way out here just to go home with a few pictures of trees."

Marcus shrugged.

"Well, if we're going forward, we better move before it gets dark."

They continued walking.

The jungle slowly grew darker as the afternoon passed.

Thick roots twisted across the ground, forcing them to watch every step. Large insects buzzed around them, and strange animal calls echoed in the distance.

At one point, Lena stopped to photograph a massive tree that looked hundreds of years old.

"This place feels ancient," she said quietly.

Marcus looked around.

"That's because it is."

The ground suddenly sloped downward as they entered a narrow valley.

Daniel checked his tablet.

"According to the map, the ruins should be somewhere past this area."

Kareem wiped sweat from his forehead.

"Let's keep moving."

As they climbed out of the valley, the jungle suddenly opened into a small clearing.

Everyone stopped.

In the middle of the clearing stood something unexpected.

Stone.

Large stone blocks covered in moss and vines.

They looked old.

Very old.

Marcus walked closer.

"Looks like part of a structure," he said.

Lena raised her camera excitedly.

"Are these the ruins?"

Kareem shook his head.

"No… this looks more like a marker."

Daniel crouched near one of the stones.

"There's something carved here."

The group gathered around.

The carving was faint but still visible beneath the moss.

Symbols.

Strange symbols that none of them recognized.

Lena traced one of them gently.

"Do you think it's a warning?"

Marcus didn't like the idea.

"Or a message."

Kareem examined the stones carefully.

"These aren't random," he said. "They were placed here intentionally."

Daniel suddenly looked up.

"Guys… do you hear that?"

Everyone listened.

At first, there was nothing.

Then it came again.

Drumming.

A slow, distant rhythm.

Boom… boom… boom…

The sound echoed through the jungle like a heartbeat.

Lena's eyes widened.

"Please tell me that's not what I think it is."

Marcus looked serious.

"Those sound like tribal drums."

Daniel shook his head quickly.

"That's impossible. No tribes live in this region."

The drumming grew louder.

Boom… boom… boom…

And then it stopped.

Just like that.

Silence returned.

A cold breeze moved through the clearing.

Lena shivered.

"I don't like this."

Marcus turned slowly, scanning the trees.

"Neither do I."

Then Daniel's tablet suddenly beeped.

He looked down at the screen.

"That's weird…"

"What?" Kareem asked.

"My GPS just lost signal."

Kareem frowned.

"What do you mean lost signal?"

"I mean completely gone," Daniel replied.

He tapped the screen again.

Nothing.

"No map. No location."

Marcus sighed.

"Great."

Lena looked worried.

"So we're officially lost now?"

Kareem folded the old map again.

"No."

He pointed toward the jungle ahead.

"The ruins are in that direction."

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"How can you be sure?"

Kareem pointed back at the stone markers.

"They're pointing the same way."

Everyone looked again.

Marcus slowly nodded.

"You're right."

The stones formed a rough line leading deeper into the forest.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"Well… I guess we follow them."

The sun was already beginning to set.

The jungle grew darker with every minute.

Marcus looked at the sky through the trees.

"We should set up camp soon."

Kareem nodded.

They gathered some branches and built a small fire in the clearing.

The flames flickered softly, casting long shadows around them.

Lena sat close to the fire, reviewing the pictures she had taken during the day.

"These carvings are incredible," she said.

Daniel sat beside her.

"Let's just hope they don't belong to something dangerous."

Marcus leaned against a tree, watching the jungle carefully.

Kareem sat across from him.

"You think someone is still out there?" Kareem asked quietly.

Marcus didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

Kareem glanced into the darkness beyond the firelight.

"What makes you so sure?"

Marcus pointed toward the ground near the edge of the clearing.

Kareem followed his finger.

Footprints.

More of them.

Fresh ones.

They circled the clearing.

As if someone had been watching them from the trees.

Kareem felt a chill run down his spine.

"Don't tell the others," Marcus whispered.

"They'll panic."

Kareem nodded slowly.

The fire crackled quietly.

Lena suddenly looked up.

"Did you hear that?"

Everyone listened.

At first there was nothing.

Then came a faint rustling sound in the bushes.

Marcus stood instantly, gripping his machete.

"Who's there?" he shouted.

No answer.

The rustling stopped.

The jungle returned to silence.

Daniel forced a nervous laugh.

"Okay… this is officially creepy."

Marcus slowly sat down again.

"Probably just an animal."

But Kareem noticed something Marcus didn't say.

Marcus never took his eyes off the trees.

The night grew darker.

One by one, the group fell asleep near the fire.

All except Marcus.

He remained awake, listening carefully to every sound.

Hours passed.

Then something moved at the edge of the clearing.

A figure.

Barefoot.

Standing silently between the trees.

Watching them.

Marcus slowly stood up.

But before he could step forward…

The figure disappeared into the jungle again.

Marcus stared into the darkness.

And whispered one quiet sentence to himself.

"We're not alone out here."
