Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 – A Smile That Felt Wrong

Ren did not turn around. The killing intent behind him was sharp and cold, pressing against his back like the edge of a knife. If he reacted too quickly, whoever it belonged to would notice. Instead, he remained perfectly still, staring at the empty desk in front of him while carefully sensing the invisible pressure spreading through the room. The intention behind him was controlled—far too controlled. Most people with violent thoughts leaked emotions like anger, panic, or fear, but this one felt disciplined and patient, like a predator that knew how to stay hidden. Beside him, Mira Tachibana straightened slightly, and Ren immediately realized she had felt it too. Her smile didn't disappear, but it sharpened in a subtle way, as if she were watching the final move of a chess game unfold exactly as she had predicted. Around them, students continued leaving the classroom, completely unaware of the silent tension stretching between three people.

Ren slowly stood up and picked up his bag, forcing himself to act normal. As he stepped into the aisle, he felt the cold intention shift behind him, as if the person had slightly adjusted their posture. They're watching us, he thought. Without turning around, he walked toward the door with steady steps. A moment later, Mira followed. Neither of them spoke until they stepped into the crowded hallway where students were talking loudly and moving between classes. Compared to the suffocating silence of the classroom, the noise almost felt comforting. Mira stopped beside a large window that overlooked the courtyard below. Ren stood beside her and looked down. Teachers and staff had gathered around a section of pavement blocked off with yellow tape. Even from this distance, the dark stain on the ground was visible—the place where the student had fallen.

For a few seconds neither of them spoke. Rain began to fall lightly against the glass, thin droplets sliding down the window. Finally Mira broke the silence. "You handled that well," she said calmly. Ren glanced at her. "Handled what?" Mira tapped her finger softly against the glass. "Not turning around. Most people would have reacted immediately. But you didn't. That means you understood something important." Ren remained quiet for a moment before replying softly, "If the killer is in the classroom, reacting would only confirm that we know." Mira's smile widened slightly. "Exactly." She looked back down at the courtyard where the staff continued to gather nervously. "The student who died was Kaito Nakamura," she continued casually. "Second-year. Good grades. No history of depression. Two close friends." Ren frowned slightly. "You checked already?" Mira shrugged. "Of course. People don't suddenly jump from rooftops without leaving signs. Yet the teachers immediately called it suicide."

Ren thought about the calm intention he had sensed earlier. "You think the killer planned that," he said quietly. "Obviously," Mira replied without hesitation. Then she turned toward him again. "But that's not the interesting part." Ren waited. Mira's eyes studied him carefully. "The interesting part is that the killer didn't expect someone like us to exist." Ren's expression hardened slightly. "Someone like us?" Mira met his gaze directly. "People who can feel intentions." The noise of the hallway suddenly felt distant to Ren. All his life he had believed he was the only one with this strange awareness. Yet Mira spoke about it as if it were obvious. "How?" he asked quietly. Mira shook her head slightly. "I don't know yet. But I know one thing." Her eyes drifted briefly toward the classroom door behind them. "The person who killed Kaito… is scared now."

At that exact moment, Ren felt it again. The intention inside the classroom had changed. The cold, controlled calmness from earlier was gone. In its place was something weaker—uneasy and suspicious. The killer had realized something. Ren and Mira were no longer just ordinary students; they were a threat. Mira suddenly pushed herself away from the window and adjusted her bag casually. "Looks like our murderer is getting nervous," she said lightly. Ren looked at her. "Our murderer?" Mira began walking down the hallway. After a few steps she glanced back over her shoulder, that strange smile returning to her face. Rain tapped harder against the windows as distant thunder rolled through the sky. "If we're right," she said softly, "then this isn't suicide." She paused for a brief moment before adding, her eyes shining with quiet excitement, "It's the beginning of a game… and someone in our class just made the first move."
