Chapter 5 - 5: The Unstoppable Sprint

Beep! The sharp whistle echoed across the track.

Sol Mirek shot forward like an arrow released from a bowstring, his form streaking across the track like a bolt of white lightning. A loud whoosh followed in his wake, rattling the ears of everyone watching.

This time, Yamamoto Hidetaka had called in two other PE teachers to time him, ensuring accuracy.

"6.77 seconds!"

"6.80 seconds!"

"6.78 seconds!"

The readings were nearly identical. Silence fell across the sports field, followed by an uproar of shocked voices.

"How is this possible? Is he a monster?"

"Are all high school students this terrifying?"

"He looks so thin and frail, yet he has the strength to crush our country's professional athletes…"

Sol ignored the whispers, taking the towel handed to him by a female classmate. He wiped the faint trace of sweat from his forehead and slowly approached Yamamoto Hidetaka.

"Yamamoto-sensei, is this enough?" Sol asked calmly.

The teacher's mouth opened and closed, words failing him. He could only nod mechanically, recording the astonishing result in the scorebook. From this moment, he realized the sports history of Tokyo Den High School, and perhaps the entire world, would be rewritten by this seemingly delicate young man. Yamamoto was convinced this 100-meter sprint record might stand unbroken until humanity's end, as Sol's speed had already surpassed human limits.

In the following events, Sol performed flawlessly, stopping once he had achieved perfect scores. While still far beyond ordinary students, the other results were less shocking than the 100-meter dash.

Baki Hanma, on the other hand, provided a chaotic spectacle. His baseball throws dug pits in the ground, his long jumps cleared the sandpit entirely, and he snapped the horizontal bar during pull-ups. Sol watched Baki's uncontrolled power and shook his head. Baki's strength was phenomenal, yet he lacked the precision to control it for ordinary life.

"Next is the 1500-meter run," Yamamoto Hidetaka announced, glancing at Baki with a headache. "If you keep this up, you're going to fail."

"What should I do then?" he muttered, tapping his head with a pen in frustration.

The surrounding students laughed until Baki spoke up.

"Um… what's the world record for the 1500 meters?"

Cheers erupted around him.

"Baki's going to break it!"

"You can do it!"

Despite witnessing Baki's physical feats, few realized just how powerful he truly was. Now, seeing him aim to break a world record, everyone rooted for him, hoping their country could produce a monster rivaling Sol Mirek.

Yamamoto Hidetaka, however, remained skeptical.

"3 minutes 26 seconds. Think you can beat it?" he asked with a sigh.

"If I break it, Yamamoto-sensei, can I get full marks for all events?" Baki said earnestly.

The laughter died instantly. The students stared, shocked that Baki was serious. Yamamoto's eyes lit up. He stepped forward, putting an arm around Baki's shoulders.

"Not only will you pass, but you'll get perfect scores on everything," he said, grinning. Baki's raw strength was undeniable, yet his lack of control was evident. Now, Yamamoto was curious to see if this student could truly match Sol, the record-breaking transfer student.

The 1500-meter test drew the full attention of everyone on the track. Sol and Baki took their positions. Baki was focused, removing his school uniform to reveal a chiseled, muscular physique. The crowd gasped.

"So impressive."

"These muscles… is he on steroids?"

"Probably not. He's just naturally strong."

"Go, Baki!"

Yamamoto Hidetaka's excitement was evident as he raised the starting pistol.

"Ready—!"

Bang! The shot rang out. Sol exploded forward like a cannonball. Baki's pupils narrowed sharply. Already, Sol had pulled a significant distance ahead, forcing Baki to adjust his stride to keep pace.

Each of Sol's steps left clear imprints in the dirt, his speed creating afterimages that whipped the hair of nearby students with the force of his motion. Baki, steady and controlled, maintained a close pursuit, never rushing but refusing to fall behind.

When Sol had completed two laps, Yamamoto checked his stopwatch: only 20.15 seconds had passed. It was already far beyond Wayde van Niekerk's 400-meter world record of 43.03 seconds. He briefly suspected he had miscounted laps.

Sol's speed only continued to increase. Baki, pushed to his limit, mirrored the pace, muscles straining, expressions fierce, preparing for the final sprint.

The entire sports field was silent, everyone holding their breath, witnessing an unprecedented clash of raw power and relentless determination.
