Chapter 2 - The dark truth of history

THE ERASURE OF THE HISTORY

There is a famous saying: " History is written by victors." This is perhaps the darkest truth to all . When one Empire consquers another , they don't just take the land ,' they often destroy the libraries , the art , and the records of the people they defeated. This means that much of what we know about ancient civilization - from the Aztecs to various kingdoms in Africa and Asia - comes from the perspective of the people who destroyed them . We lose them' we lose the " truth " of how those people lived , thought , and felt because their voices were silenced to make the conquerors look more magic

THE FOUNDATION OF BLOOD: FORCED LABOUR

Many of the world's most ' glorious ' monuments and wealthiest nations were built on the backs of the exploited . The Great pyramids , the Great walls of china , and the massive wealth of the Industrial revolution were often fueled by forced labour, slavery , or extreme poverty for centuries, the global economy thrived on the transatlantic slave trade , a dark period where millions of human being were treated to cargo . While we admire the architecture of old European cities or the growth of early America , the dark truth is that this progress was paid for with the lives and freedom of those who were never meant to benefit from it .

THE DARK SIDE OF PROGRESS

Humanity has often made its greatest scientific leaps during its darkest hours . Some of the most significant medical and technological break throughts came from unethical experiments were conducted on prisoners . After the war , many of the scientist involved were secretly moved to other countries ( like through operation paperclip ) to help develop rocket technology and medicine . This creates a moral shadow : we benefits today from knowledge that was gained through absolute cruelty .

WHY WE MUST FACE THE DARKNESS

The reason it is important to study the "Dark truth" isn't to make us feel bad about the world , but to ensure we don't repeat the same patterns. History moves in cycles . When we ignore the roots of prejudice , the causes of femine , or the warning signs of tyranny , we leave ourselves vulnerable to them happening again .

Understanding history in its ful , messy , and sometimes terrifying reality allows us to be more empathetic and critical thinkers . It teaches us that just accepting what is written on the first page of a book . I'm always open to correction if I get something wrong: the best way to fix it is to just tell me what I missed or what l need to know .
