Chapter 2 - CLASHING SPARKS

Chapter Two

Sia's first week at the company had been a whirlwind of nerves, coffee mishaps, and long hours, but nothing could have prepared her for the meeting that awaited her Monday morning. She entered the sleek, glass-walled conference room, clutching her notepad like a shield. The polished floors reflected the morning sunlight, but it did nothing to ease her tension. At the head of the table, Ryu Han sat with his signature scowl, reviewing documents with surgical precision. The moment he looked up, his eyes met hers—icy, assessing, and utterly unforgiving.

"Miss Sia, I hope you've managed to get through your first week without any… further disasters," he said, his voice low and sharp, a controlled edge that made everyone else in the room flinch. Sia felt her stomach tighten, her fingers gripping her notepad until the paper crumpled slightly. "Yes, sir. I've completed all the tasks assigned to me," she said, trying to keep her voice steady.

He raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow, his gaze like a scalpel dissecting her. "All of them? Even the Johnson project, which required careful coordination and attention to detail?" His tone carried the weight of a challenge, one that could easily crush someone less determined.

Sia swallowed hard, remembering the countless late nights she had spent double-checking every email, every spreadsheet. She'd practically lived in her tiny apartment, pouring herself into the work just to avoid another embarrassing confrontation with him. "Yes, sir. Every single part has been completed and cross-checked," she said, forcing confidence into her trembling voice.

Ryu leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, eyes narrowing. "Very well. I'll be reviewing your work personally." The words hung in the air like a storm warning. Sia nodded quickly, swallowing the lump in her throat. Her pulse raced. This was her moment to prove herself—or fail spectacularly.

As the meeting progressed, Ryu's presence was suffocating. Every instruction he gave, every critique he delivered, carried an invisible weight that made her palms sweat. Yet, amidst the tension, she noticed something strange—a flicker behind his sharp gaze, almost imperceptible, like curiosity or perhaps approval. She shook her head quickly. No, she reminded herself. There's no room for thoughts like that. He hates me. He will always hate me.

Halfway through the discussion, a miscommunication caused a minor error in the presentation slides. A hush fell over the room, all eyes turning toward her. Heart hammering, Sia took a deep breath and stepped forward. "I apologize for the oversight. I'll fix it immediately." Her voice was steady, but her legs threatened to betray her.

Ryu's gaze did not waver. "Thank you, Miss Sia. I expect efficiency, not excuses," he said, cold but precise. His words were like steel, cutting through the tension, yet beneath them, Sia detected something unexpected—almost a test, almost a silent challenge to prove her worth. She swallowed, fighting the urge to retreat. This man was impossible, but she wouldn't back down. Not now.

The meeting dragged on, each agenda item another trial by fire. Sia found herself hyper-aware of every movement he made—the faint crease between his brows, the controlled exhale when he disagreed with someone's report, the way his gaze seemed to flicker toward her whenever she spoke. Every glance carried unspoken scrutiny, yet also a strange, unsettling fascination.

By the end of the session, Sia's arms ached from clutching her notes, and her mind was buzzing with a mix of fear and exhilaration. The employees filed out quietly, leaving only her and Ryu behind. For a brief moment, the harshness in his eyes softened, just a fraction, as he examined the charts she had prepared. Sia's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away, scolding herself for noticing.

As she gathered her papers and returned to her desk, exhaustion collided with determination. She realized that Ryu Han wasn't just a tyrant to endure; he was a force that could push her to be better, sharper, faster. Every harsh critique, every piercing look was a challenge she had to meet. And though she would never admit it aloud, a tiny spark of curiosity about the man beneath the icy exterior had been ignited in her chest.

By the time she sat down, she allowed herself a quiet moment to reflect. Her first week had tested her limits, and today had pushed her further than she thought possible. The battle lines were clear: she against Ryu Han. Yet she could feel a strange tension brewing—one that was no longer entirely hostile. Something about his presence lingered in her mind long after she left the conference room, a pull she didn't fully understand.

And for the first time, Sia dared to wonder: could a man who hated her so intensely also be the one who would change her life forever?
