Marcus had been Superman for five days—five days of flying and helping and saving and talking and carrying flour at the bakery every morning (Fumiko had stopped being surprised by the one-handed flour delivery on day three and had started leaving a plate of melon pan on the counter for him, which Marcus considered one of the finest achievements of his new life) and five days of the city slowly, gradually, unmistakably becoming aware that something new was in its sky.
The something new did not have a name.
The internet had been trying to fix this. The hashtags had multiplied like rabbits—#BlueShirtHero, #TheSymbol, #FlyingMan, #FreezeBreathGuy, #NotAHero, #BetterThanHeroes, #TShirtVigilante, #ShieldMan, #MisterHope, and Marcus's personal favorite, #BarefootChad, which had been coined by a teenager on a hero fan forum and had briefly trended before being overtaken by more serious discourse. None of them had stuck. None of them felt right. None of them captured the thing that Marcus was, the thing that the S-shield represented, the thing that people felt when they saw him—the warm, steady, indescribable rightness of a person who helped because helping was the right thing to do.
The name came on a Tuesday.
Marcus was in the eastern residential district, responding to a sound that his hearing had flagged from three miles away: the specific, distinctive crack of structural failure in an old building. Not a collapse—not yet—but a warning. The sound of weight-bearing elements reaching their limits, of stress fractures propagating through concrete and rebar, of a building beginning the slow, inexorable process of deciding to fall down.
The building was a three-story apartment complex, old construction, poorly maintained, the kind of building that existed in every city's blind spot—not quite condemned, not quite safe, housing the people who couldn't afford to live anywhere better and couldn't afford to leave. Plenty of time for an orderly evacuation.
But the people inside didn't know that. All they knew was that the floor had cracked, that the walls were groaning, that dust was falling from the ceiling, and that the building was moving in a way that buildings were not supposed to move.
Marcus arrived to find thirty-seven people evacuating in various states of panic—some orderly, some chaotic, some frozen in place by fear. He landed on the sidewalk outside the building and immediately began helping. Not by holding up the building or welding the foundation back together or performing some dramatic feat of structural engineering (although he could have done any of those things). By helping. "Hey," he said.
The girl's eyes opened. She looked at him through the gap between the bed frame and the floor—two dark eyes, wide with fear, peering at him from the shadows.
"It's okay," Marcus said. "I'm here to take you outside. Your mom's going to be there. Want to come with me?"
The girl shook her head. Her hands tightened over her ears.
Marcus lay down on the floor. He lay flat on his stomach, on the cracked and dusty linoleum of a failing apartment in a failing building, and he put his face at the girl's level, eye to eye, separated by two feet of shadow and a bed frame.
"What's your name?" he asked.
"...Yui," the girl whispered.
"Yui. That's pretty. My name—well, I don't really have a name yet. People are working on it." He smiled. The smile was visible even in the dim light under the bed. "Can I tell you a secret, Yui?"
Yui's eyes widened slightly. The universal child response to the word "secret." Curiosity, even in the grip of terror, was irresistible.
Marcus leaned closer. "This building is going to be fine for a while longer. We have lots of time. There's no rush. So if you want to stay under there for a minute, that's okay. But it's nicer outside. The sun's out. And I think your mom would really like to see you."
Yui's lower lip trembled.
"Is the building going to fall?" she whispered.
"Not while I'm here," Marcus said. And he meant it. If the building decided to collapse in the next five minutes, he would hold it up. He would hold it up with one hand if he had to. He would hold up the entire building and every building on the block and every building in the city before he let a single piece of rubble touch this child.
Yui looked at him. She looked at his face—the honest, warm, open face of a man lying on a dirty floor so that he could talk to a scared child at eye level. She looked at the S-shield on his chest, visible in the gap beneath the bed, the red and yellow bright against the dark blue even in the shadows.
"Are you a hero?" she asked.
"I'm a friend," Marcus said. "Is that okay?"
Yui considered this. Then, slowly, she uncurled. She took her hands off her ears. She crawled forward, out from under the bed, her small body emerging from the shadows into the dusty light of the apartment.
Marcus sat up. He opened his arms. Yui looked at them—the large, steady, open arms—and she crawled into them without hesitation, the way a child crawls into the arms of someone they trust completely, and Marcus picked her up and held her against his chest and stood.
The building groaned. A crack appeared in the ceiling, and plaster dust rained down. Yui flinched and buried her face in Marcus's neck.
"I've got you," Marcus said. "Close your eyes. Count to ten. When you open them, we'll be outside."
Yui closed her eyes. Marcus counted with her—one, two, three—and on three he was moving, not at super speed but fast, fast enough that the building's deterioration was irrelevant, through the apartment door and down the hall and down the stairs, his feet barely touching the steps, his body angled to shield Yui from every piece of falling debris, every cloud of dust, every sharp edge and broken surface that the dying building threw at them. By seven they were at the front door. By nine they were on the sidewalk. By ten they were in the sunlight.
"Ten," Yui said, and opened her eyes.
The sun hit her face. She blinked. She looked around—at the crowd of evacuees on the sidewalk, at the fire trucks that had arrived, at the police perimeter being established—and then she saw her mother.
Her mother was at the edge of the crowd, held back by a police officer, her face a mask of terror so complete that it had gone past expression and into blankness, the blankness of a person whose mind was refusing to process the possibility that her child might be inside a collapsing building. She was staring at the building. She was staring at the front door.
And then the front door produced a tall man in a blue shirt carrying her daughter, and the blankness shattered like a window.
"YUI!"
Marcus walked toward the mother. The police officer let him through—at this point, Marcus's face was recognized by most of the emergency services in Musutafu, and the general consensus among first responders was that the man in the blue shirt was to be allowed to do whatever the man in the blue shirt wanted to do, because attempting to stop him was both futile and counterproductive.
He set Yui down. Yui ran to her mother. The mother fell to her knees and caught her and the sound they made—the combined, harmonized cry of a parent and child reuniting—was, as always, the most beautiful sound Marcus had ever heard.
He turned to go.
"Wait!" Yui's voice. Small and clear and carrying the absolute authority of a five-year-old who had decided that the conversation was not over. "Wait, wait, wait!"
Marcus turned back. Yui was in her mother's arms, but she was leaning away, reaching toward Marcus with one hand, her small face bright with something that was not fear anymore. It was wonder. The unfiltered, unmediated, complete wonder of a child who has just experienced something miraculous and is trying to find a word for it.
"You're like Superman!" Yui said.
The word hit Marcus like a yellow sun.
Not physically. Not the way Sledgehammer's fist had hit him or Nightshade's gas or Razorwing's blades. It hit him in the place where Marcus Cole still lived, in the heart of the heart of him, in the place where a man from Cincinnati who loved comic books and read to kids and gave away his paychecks had once existed and still, in every way that mattered, did.
Superman.
He stared at the girl. "What did you say?"
"Superman!" Yui repeated, delighted by his reaction. "Like in the old stories! My grandpa has books! Old old OLD books! With a man who flies and saves people and he has a—a thing on his chest—" She pointed at the S-shield. "Like that! Like YOUR thing! Grandpa says it means hope! You're Superman!"
Marcus's vision blurred. Not from tears—his body didn't produce tears, not in the conventional sense, not the saline solution that human tear ducts secreted—but from something else. Something deeper. The visual equivalent of a catch in the throat, a moment where the input overwhelmed the processing, where the significance of what he was hearing temporarily exceeded his ability to compute it.
Superman existed here. In some form—old books, Yui had said, her grandfather's books—the story existed. The myth. The idea. Somewhere in this world, someone had told a story about a man who could fly and who wore a symbol on his chest that meant hope, and the story had survived, had persisted, had been passed down from grandfather to granddaughter, and the granddaughter had looked at Marcus and she had recognized him.

"You know what?" he said, and his voice was steady even though everything inside him was singing. "I think I like that name."
Yui beamed. The beam of a five-year-old who has been told that her idea was good. The best beam in the universe.
"Superman!" she announced to her mother, to the crowd, to the fire trucks and the police officers and the crumbling building and the entire city. She pointed at Marcus with the absolute, unquestionable authority of a child who has named a thing and is not interested in alternative suggestions. "His name is Superman!"
Marcus smiled at her. He stood up. He looked at the mother, who was holding her daughter and crying and smiling at the same time.
"Thank you, Yui," he said.
Then he rose. Up into the sky, into the sunlight, the S-shield blazing on his chest, and Yui waved at him from her mother's arms, waving with the vigorous, full-body commitment that only a child can muster, and she shouted his name—his name—into the sky:
"BYE, SUPERMAN! BYE!"
Superman.
He was Superman.
He had always been Superman.
But now the world knew it too.
The cape came from an old man.
It was the seventh day. One week since Marcus Cole had woken up on a rooftop in Musutafu City with the power of a Kryptonian and the heart of a man from Cincinnati. One week of helping, saving, talking, carrying, fixing, listening, being. "I found the fabric," Ito said. His voice was steady but his hands were not. "Different places. A donation bin. A fabric scrap in a recycle pile. A woman at the shelter—I've been going to the shelter, they have a sewing machine—she let me use it. I'm not—I'm not very good. The stitches are—it's not perfect."
"Ito-san—"
"You don't have a cape," Ito said. "I see you on the news. I see you flying. And I think—he needs a cape. That man—Superman, they call you Superman now—he needs a cape. A hero should have a cape." He paused. "I know it's not—it's not what a real cape should look like. It's small. It's patchy. The fabric doesn't all match. I—"
Marcus took the cape.
He took it from Ito's trembling hands and he held it and he looked at it and he ran his thumb over the uneven stitches and the mismatched patches and the asymmetrical hem, and he felt every stitch. Not with his enhanced tactile sensitivity, not with his microscopic vision, not with any Kryptonian sense. He felt the stitches with the part of him that was still Marcus Cole—the part that had read comic books on the floor of a Cincinnati apartment and given his paychecks to strangers and sat in hallways with panicking veterans and read stories to kids in detention centers. The part that understood, with a clarity that no superpower could provide, that the value of a gift was not in its quality but in its intention.
This man—this homeless man, this man who had nothing, who slept on benches and ate from whatever kindness the world occasionally threw his way—had taken his nothing and turned it into something. He had sat at a sewing machine and he had sewed, stitch by uneven stitch, a cape for the man who had found his dog.
Not because Marcus had asked. Not because anyone had asked. Because Ito Kensuke wanted to give something to the person who had given something to him. Because that was what people did when they were at their best—they gave. Even when they had nothing. Especially when they had nothing.
Marcus put the cape on.
He swung it over his shoulders—it was lighter than a real cape should have been, the mismatched fabrics creating an oddly varied texture against his back—and he let it settle. "That's good. That's really good, Ito-san."
"I haven't had an address in four years."
"You will."
Ito looked at him. The brightness in his eyes intensified, and for a moment Marcus thought the old man was going to cry, but he didn't. He smiled instead. The second bloom. Just as beautiful as the first.
"Thank you, Superman," Ito said.
Superman.
The name and the cape, both given to him by the people he had helped. Not earned through combat or competition or examination. Given. Freely. With love.
Superman rose from the park. The patchwork cape fluttered behind him—shorter than it should have been, more colorful than it should have been, less uniform and less polished and less professional than any cape in the history of superhero fiction.
And more perfect than any of them.
The Tartarus deliveries had become routine.
That was the wrong word. Nothing about a man flying criminals to a maximum-security prison island without going through intake procedures was "routine" in any conventional sense. But for the guards of Tartarus—specifically the rooftop detail, who had drawn the short straw of being the first point of contact for Superman's unscheduled arrivals—the experience had progressed through the standard stages of extraordinary-event processing: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally, a resigned acceptance that was indistinguishable from routine.
Day five had been Ironclad—a villain with a metal-skin quirk who had been terrorizing a shopping district until Superman had appeared, tapped him on the forehead with one finger (the tap had been calibrated to deliver approximately the same force as a professional boxer's full-power punch, which was, for Superman, the equivalent of an ant sneezing), and caught the unconscious villain before he hit the ground.
Day six had been a pair of villains who called themselves Double Trouble—twins with a synchronized telekinesis quirk who had been robbing a jewelry store. Superman had walked in, stood in the middle of their combined telekinetic assault (the psychic force had washed over him like a light breeze; he had, in fact, not been entirely sure they were attacking until one of them had started screaming), and gently suggested they surrender. They had not surrendered. He had sighed, moved faster than their neurons could fire, and delivered them both to Tartarus wrapped in a curtain rod he had bent into a figure-eight around their torsos with one hand.
Day seven had been a genuine threat—a villain called Meltdown whose quirk allowed him to generate and project superheated plasma from his hands. Meltdown had been engaged in a running battle with three pro heroes across the industrial district, causing massive collateral damage, when Superman had arrived. The plasma had hit Superman's chest at approximately 4,000 degrees Celsius. His shirt hadn't even gotten warm. Superman had walked through the plasma stream, placed his hand over both of Meltdown's wrists simultaneously, and held them together until the villain exhausted his quirk reserves, at which point Meltdown had looked up at the unmoved, unburned, completely unaffected man holding his wrists and had said, in a very small voice, "Oh."
Tartarus. Again. The rooftop guards had started keeping a logbook.
But it was what happened after the deliveries that truly surprised the guards. And the warden. And eventually the entire administrative staff of the most secure prison facility in the country.
It started on day five, after he dropped off Ironclad.
Superman had set the unconscious villain down on the rooftop, given the guards his standard briefing on the villain's quirk and threat level, and then—instead of flying away, as he usually did—he had paused. He had looked at the building beneath his feet. He had looked through it, the guards realized later, with whatever form of enhanced vision allowed him to see through solid matter. He had been looking at the cells below. At the people in them.
"I'd like to visit someone," Superman had said.
The senior guard—a man named Tanaka who had, over the past week, developed a relationship with Superman that could best be described as "exasperated tolerance"—had blinked.
"Visit... someone?"
"Sledgehammer. The first person I brought here. I'd like to talk to him."
"Talk to—sir, this is a maximum-security facility. We don't allow—"
"Tanaka-san," Superman had said, pleasantly. "I could visit every cell in this building in approximately one-third of a second, and there is nothing in the facility's security infrastructure that could slow me down. I am asking because asking is polite. But I am going to talk to Sledgehammer."
Tanaka had stared at him. Superman had smiled at him. It was, Tanaka would later reflect, a very nice smile. Which somehow made it worse.
"I'll... I'll need to clear it with the warden," Tanaka had said.
"Of course. I'll wait."
The warden had been contacted. The warden had been incredulous. The warden had been informed that the alternative to allowing the visit was Superman simply walking through the walls, which the warden's security systems could not prevent. The warden had authorized the visit.
Superman had walked into Tartarus for the first time.
The cell blocks of Tartarus were designed to suppress hope.
This was not an official design philosophy. No architect had written "suppress hope" in the project brief. But the result was the same: gray concrete walls, fluorescent lighting that hummed at a frequency calibrated to be subtly irritating, cramped cells with minimal furnishing, suppression technology that kept quirk users in a permanent state of reduced capability. The air was recycled and stale. The temperature was maintained at a precise sixty-four degrees Fahrenheit—not cold enough to be a human rights violation, but cold enough to be uncomfortable. The guards were professional but distant. The routine was monotonous by design.
It was a place built to contain. Not to rehabilitate. Not to heal. Not to understand. To contain. To take the people that society had designated as threats and put them in a box and close the lid.
Superman walked through the corridors, escorted by two guards and the warden—a stern woman named Director Goto who looked at Superman with the expression of a person whose authority was being challenged and who had not yet decided whether to be angry or impressed—and he looked at everything. He looked at the cells. He looked at the people in them. He looked at the suppression technology and the lighting and the temperature controls and the food service setup (he scanned a meal tray through three walls; the nutritional content was adequate but uninspired) and the exercise yard (small, surrounded by high walls, available for two hours per day) and the medical facility (understaffed, under-equipped) and the counseling services (nonexistent).
He absorbed all of this. He processed it. He filed it away.
Then he walked into Sledgehammer's cell.
Sledgehammer—whose real name, Superman had learned from the intake records that he had read through the filing cabinet from the hallway, was Goto Daichi (no relation to the warden)—was sitting on the edge of his cot, his stone-encased left fist resting on his knee, his right hand (still human, still healing from the fractures sustained when he'd punched Superman's jaw) wrapped in bandages. He looked up when the cell door opened, and his face went through a rapid sequence of expressions—confusion, recognition, fear, more confusion—before settling on a wary blankness.
"Hi," Superman said.
He walked into the cell. The guards stood at the door. Superman pulled up the only chair in the cell—a simple metal stool bolted to the floor, which he unstuck from its bolts with a casual tug that made the welds pop like champagne corks—and he sat down across from Sledgehammer.
Sledgehammer stared at him.
"You," Sledgehammer said.
"Me," Superman agreed. "How's your hand?"
"...What?"
"Your hand. The right one. The one you broke on my face. How is it?"
Sledgehammer looked at his bandaged hand. He looked at Superman. He looked at his hand again.
"It hurts," he said, finally. His voice was different than it had been on the street—quieter, flatter, stripped of the theatrical bombast that had characterized his villain persona. In the cell, without the audience, without the performance, Goto Daichi was not Sledgehammer. He was a man in a small room with a broken hand and a confused expression.
"I'm sorry about that," Superman said.
Sledgehammer blinked. "You're... sorry? I punched you."
"And broke your hand. If I'd been faster—if I'd stopped the fight before it started—your hand would be fine. So I'm sorry."
Sledgehammer stared at him. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again. No sound came out. He appeared to be experiencing a form of cognitive dissonance so severe that his brain had temporarily suspended its language processing functions.
"I'm not here to interrogate you," Superman said. "I'm not a cop. I'm not a hero, in the way you understand heroes. I'm just here to talk."
"Talk about what?"
"Whatever you want."
Silence. A long silence. Sledgehammer looked at the floor. He looked at the walls. He looked at the ceiling. He looked at Superman.
"Why?" he asked.
It was the most honest question anyone had ever asked Superman in this world, and he honored it with the most honest answer he could give.
"Because you're a person," Superman said. "And nobody should go through the day without someone to talk to."
They talked for forty minutes.
Superman learned that Goto Daichi was thirty-four years old. That he had developed his quirk at age five and been told, by his parents and his teachers and every authority figure in his life, that it was a "villain-type" quirk—too destructive, too crude, too aggressive for hero work. "Tomorrow. Same time. If that's okay."
"You're... you're coming back?"
"Every day," Superman said. "Until you don't want me to anymore."
Goto stared at him. His stone fist clenched on his knee—not in anger, but in the reflexive, unconscious grip of a person who has been offered something precious and is afraid it will be taken away.
"Why?" he asked again.
"Because you're a person," Superman said again. "Same reason as before."
He left. He flew back to the city. He helped a woman whose car had broken down on the highway. He reunited a lost teenager with her family. He stopped a purse-snatcher by standing in front of the man and looking at him until the man handed the purse back voluntarily. He went to the bakery and carried flour and ate melon pan with Fumiko.
The next day, he went back to Tartarus.
He visited Goto. They talked about cooking. Superman described, in detail, the best meal he had ever eaten as Marcus Cole—a bowl of chili from a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Cincinnati that had been run by a 78-year-old woman named Doris who put cinnamon in the recipe and refused to tell anyone why. Goto listened, rapt, and then described his own best meal—a bento his mother had made for him when he was seven, rice and egg and pickled vegetables, simple and perfect.
Then Superman visited Nightshade.
Nightshade—real name Kuroda Emi—was less receptive.
"Get out," she said, when Superman walked into her cell.
"Okay," Superman said. "But I'll be back tomorrow."
He left. He came back the next day. Nightshade told him to get out again. He left again.
The third day, Nightshade didn't tell him to get out. She sat on her cot and glared at the wall and said nothing. Superman sat in the chair and said nothing either. They sat in silence for thirty minutes.
The fourth day, Nightshade spoke.
"Why do you keep coming here?"
"Because you're a person," Superman said. The standard answer. The only answer. The answer that would never change because it never needed to.
"I'm a criminal."
"You're a person who committed crimes. That's not the same thing."
"I poisoned six people."
"Yes. And they recovered. And you're in here, where you can't poison anyone else. And I'm here, where I can talk to you."
"About what?"
"Anything. What did you do before you were Nightshade?"
Silence. A long silence. Then, grudgingly, as if the words were being extracted from her like teeth:
"I was a pharmacist."
Superman didn't react. He didn't raise his eyebrows or widen his eyes or make any of the performative expressions of surprise that people used to signal that they had heard something unexpected. He just nodded.
"A pharmacist," he said. "That makes sense. Your knowledge of alkaloid chemistry is sophisticated. The tetrodotoxin analog you produce—that's a complex molecular structure. You'd need an advanced understanding of biochemistry to develop a toxin that precise."
Nightshade looked at him. For the first time, her expression shifted from hostility to something else. Curiosity, maybe. Or confusion. The confusion of a person who was being seen—not as a villain, not as a criminal, not as a threat classification in a database—but as a pharmacist.
"I had a pharmacy," she said, slowly. "A small one. In a residential neighborhood. I was—I was good at it. I helped people. Old people, mostly. People who couldn't get to the bigger stores."
"What happened?"
Another silence. Longer this time. Nightshade's hands, which had been resting on her knees, curled into fists.
"A hero happened," she said. "A fight. In my neighborhood. Two heroes, one villain, lots of collateral damage. Standard stuff, right? Property damage, insurance claims, sorry for the inconvenience." Her voice was bitter. Old bitter. The kind of bitter that had been fermenting for years. "My pharmacy was destroyed. Everything. The stock, the equipment, the building. Gone. And the insurance—the hero damage insurance that everyone's supposed to have—it didn't cover it. Fine print. Some exclusion about 'quirk-adjacent destruction' versus 'direct quirk damage.' She stopped. Her fists clenched tighter.
"And then," she continued, her voice flat, "I discovered that my quirk—the toxin production that I'd spent my entire life suppressing because I was a pharmacist, because I helped people, because I wasn't a villain—could make me more money in one robbery than I'd made in ten years of legitimate work."

Nightshade looked at him. Her eyes were bright. Not with tears—Nightshade did not appear to be a person who cried easily—but with something else. Something fragile and angry and hungry. Hungry to be seen. Hungry to be understood. Hungry for someone—anyone—to acknowledge that her story was more complicated than "villain robs bank, villain goes to prison."
"I'll come back tomorrow," Superman said.
"...Why?"
"Same reason."

Within two weeks, Superman was visiting Tartarus daily.

He talked to a woman named Hayashi—no relation to the young man at the pharmacy—who was serving a life sentence for a series of attacks on hero agencies. She was angry. She was furious. She radiated hostility the way a reactor radiates heat, and she spent the first three visits spitting insults at Superman with a creativity and a venom that was, Marcus privately acknowledged, genuinely impressive.

"You're insane," she said.
"Possibly," Superman said. "How was your day?"
"I'm in prison. My day was prison."
"Did you eat?"
"...Yes."
"What did you have?"
"Rice. Miso soup. Some kind of fish."
"Was it good?"
"It was prison food."
"Fair enough. What kind of food do you like? When you're not in prison."
Silence. A long, evaluative silence, during which Hayashi looked at Superman the way a cat looks at an unfamiliar object—with intense, suspicious scrutiny, trying to determine whether it was a threat, a toy, or something else entirely.
"Ramen," she said, finally. "Good ramen. Not the instant kind. The real kind. From a place near where I grew up. The old man who ran it made his own noodles."
"What was his broth like?"
And they talked about ramen for twenty minutes. And the next day, they talked about music. And the day after that, they talked about her childhood, a little, just the edges, the safe parts, and then they talked about something else.
He talked to the ones that people called monsters.
There was a man on the deepest level of Tartarus—Level Seven, the maximum-security wing, the place where the most dangerous villains were kept in cells specifically designed for their quirks, behind doors that were three feet of reinforced steel and suppression technology that drained quirk energy faster than the body could produce it. The man's name, according to his file, was Taniguchi Reiji. His villain name was Harbinger. "That's a nice story," Superman said.

Not dramatically. Not overnight. Not in the Hollywood-movie way where the villain has a single transformative conversation and emerges reformed and repentant and ready to rejoin society. The changes were small. Incremental. Almost imperceptible.
Sledgehammer asked for a cookbook.
