Chapter 8 - We? We are You

Selene was standing alone in darkness. For a brief moment it was like she was completely blind to everything that was in font of her.

Where most would have panic, she simple took a calm breath and di not panic. Right before everything had gone dark she had seen the two small foxes in front of her.

Despite their tiny size they had radiated a powerful aura that was even more scary than when they had first encountered the Storm Maw.

In her head she could still hear them now...that soft, playful laughter echoing in her skull. Somehow she just knew that these creatures meant her no harm truly.

She stood there in the darkness for who knows how long before she could not resist speaking aloud.

"So is this some sort of trial?"

"Trial?

The voice came from her left causing Selene body to shift towards it instantly. She could not see anything still.

"Is that what you think this is?"

This time the voice came from her right, noticeable kinder than the one before.

If Selene had to guess this voice belong to the white fox that had seemed somewhat lazy earlier and the previous one belong to the black one that seem like it had too much energy.

A grin formed on Selene's face as she answered them.

"Then what else would you call this?"

"She is going to be a fun one I think."

"We can not presume."

"We must still see if she can see."

The darkness around her suddenly peeled away. As Selene regain her sight she could barely make out her surroundings. It was not that she could no longer see, but that the world around her was constantly shifting in front of her.

At first she had thought she was still in a cave, but that had quickly given way to a scene where she stood before a lake.

Before she could properly take in her surroundings, things shifted again and she found herself in the middle of the jungle again.

She could hear loud roars nearby. For a moment she thought she heard Logan"s voice, but some instinct told her to not move from the spot she was in.

The next scene shifted in front of her and now she could see Elijah, a lot older lying on the ground before her.

What was the point of all this she wondered?

What were these foxes trying to test her?

Older Elijah before her look worn and lonely.

He suddenly got up and he turned around, Selene almost gasped in shock.

His eyes were completely gone, empty sockets looking out towards her. What creeped her out more was that look directly at her and grinned.

"Is it that time already? Don't worry my sister. Stand steady in the storm."

He waved his hand and the scene before her shifted again. She could hear an annoy growl coming from somewhere in the back of her head.

Then she was back home in her old apartment. She could here Elijah and Logan in the living room playing video games. She wondered if she went to go see them now if this whole transmigration situation would end. It was a serious temptation for her.

"Is this the future you desire?"

Two voices blended together in her head.

"It is a path that has already been cut off for you."

The scene shifted again and this time she was back in the cave.

Two figures appeared in front of her.

The twin foxes, one dark and one light. They looked at her with their silver eyes, one lazily like it could barely be bothered and the other with a hint of amusement.

"What was the point of all that just now?" she asked them.

"Point?"

The black fox vanished into shadowy mist before appearing on her left side.

"There was no purpose..."

"....We simple show what might be."

The white fox finished the other sentences before stepping forward, moving to Selene right side. It furry tail curled against Selene's leg as it walked around her in a circle.

Selene did not move, instead she stood still her eyes following it carefully.

The black fox suddenly vanished from its spot and appeared floating in the air, resting its head against her shoulder.

She could feel it nibbling against her ear.

If she was honest with herself, Selene was scared out of here wits.

If it was not for the instinct to just stay still she would have probably long attempted to run away, but there was a sensation within her that suppressed that thought every time it came up.

"We will not run....we must withstand this."

A voice that was not hers, but sounded exactly like her kept urging her to just withstand it all. Without knowing why Selene knew that she could trust this voice inside her and that is the only reason she had yet to run away.

The foxes continued to probe her, moving around her and rubbing against her.

Selene felt like she was being examined down to her very soul every time those silver eyes landed on her.

After some time both settled down in front of her.

"Oh, she is a little boring don't we think?" said the black fox, shaking its head.

"We like her," replied the white fox, "She doesn't jump at every turn or the current. Thats good."

"But it is more fun when the jump," insisted the black one, moving one of its paws to its mouth as it release a yawn.

Selene look directly at it.

"Maybe you should learn to stay still more yourself?" she suggested, her tone clearly sarcastic.

The black fox's eyes widen at her comment, then it bursted out in laughter.

"We take it back. This one won't be boring."

"But we still must see."

"Yes. We all must see."

The two foxes then suddenly both turned into forms of mist, one a shining white and the other a shadowy haze before surging towards Selene. As the mists came towards her they began rotating in a spiral around her.

If there had been anybody around, they would have seen Selene's body being completely swallowed b a tornado of light and shadow.

Within it, Selene was enduring massive pressure as if her body was being pulled in two different directions.

"Which path is the correct one?"

"Which path do you choose?"

"Will we play in darkness..."

"Or sleep in the light?"

"Which do you choose?"

"Which path?"

"What is your choice?"

As she stood there in the midst of the tornado, the voices of the foxes kept going back and forth in her head.

She could see two futures in front of her, one where she was wielding the powers of light and killing daemon left and right. She was a savior and protector of Kaltrava in that future.

In the other, she wore a dress made out of shadows and led a legion of daemon against the Juza Empire. Both futures she wield almost unstoppable power....

But something felt wrong about both of them.

Neither of them truly felt like Selene.

"We are not ones to be so easily swayed. Deny both."

The same voice as before. It sounded just like her, but Selene knew deep down that it was not. Still she trusted it.

She had already felt that neither path suited her. The voice had only help solidify the confidence she needed to stay where she was.

"Choose."

"You must choose."

Selene closed her eyes before muttering in a low whisper.

"But do I?"

Suddenly the tornado in front of her stop and the two figures of the fox were floating in front of her, both smiling wide.

"Oh she will do perfectly."

"Yes, a good anchor for what is to come."

"Shhh...not too much. We don't scare her."

Their tails flickered in unison as they turned their attention back to Selene.

"We are Shai," said the white one.

"No. We are Veyr,' corrected the black one, still grinning at her.

Both of them then tilted their heads at the exact same time, their voices overlapping in perfect sync.

"We are Shai and Veyr."

"Do you accept us?"

A lump form in Selene throat as she hesitated to answer them. She was not sure if she should accept them seeing what she had just been through.

Maybe if she was Elijah she might have already made a bond based on the power gained, or even Logan who probably would not even ask any questions this would already been over.

But she was herself. Part of her could not resist wanting to ask more about what just had happened.

What exactly had made them accept her? Her refusal to make a choice? None of it made sense to her.

"First, answer me this...why me?"

Both of them turned their heads to look each other before looking back at her in confusion.

"Because you are not easily swayed by the Veil."

"Because you will walk a path in between the light and the shadow."

"Because you did not move when we tried to move you."

The black fox moved forward, curling up against her leg.

"We are you. Who else to walk with you down this path?"

They had not answered her question at all and in fact given her more to think about. What did they mean she was already walking a path between light and shadow?

"Those visions that I saw? Was that the Veil?"

"Yes and no."

"No and yes."

"The Veil shows what was, what is, what could be."

"So that was the future?" Selene asked.

"Or the past," replied Veyr, the black one, giggling as it answered.

"Do not be swayed now," said Shai, moving now to accompany her other side.

"Do you accept us?"

They asked once again, voices perfectly sync.

Part of her was still unsure, but another feeling crept up inside her. She did not know what they would face in this strange world, but she wanted to be prepare for it.

She had to be prepare for it. She refused to become a weak link in the team when she had always been the one holding those two idiots together.

Elijah had probably gone into another thought tunnel and Logan was doing who knows what, but she knew it was stupid.

Thinking of her friends, she realized that her hesitation had been foolish. It was time to get back to them.

"Okay I accept."

With those words, the two foxes dissolved into their mists forms once again before merging with her body. Selene felt like something deep within her body was locked in place before suddenly darkness began to creep at the side of her vision.

"We may have to seal ourselves away for a while, she is too fragile."

"Yes, We must be quick."

As Selene lost conscious the last thing she could hear was Veyr snickering in her mind and Shai telling him to focus.
