Chapter 3 - chapter 3: when silence breaks

Chapter 3: When Silence Breaks

The sky was already darkening when Tapiwa left school.

She walked with her bag held close, her steps steady but her thoughts loud. The city felt different at night—quieter, heavier. Streetlights flickered to life one by one, stretching long shadows across the pavement.

She didn't notice them at first.

Then footsteps matched her pace.

Three. No—more.

Her chest tightened as voices rose behind her, low and mocking. She quickened her steps, but the space around her seemed to shrink. When one of them moved into her path, she stopped.

"Relax," a voice said. Too close.

Fear climbed her throat. She tried to step back.

At the same moment, Blessings turned the corner.

A plastic bag swung lightly from his hand—bread, fruit, something simple. He had been thinking about nothing important at all until he saw Tapiwa, surrounded, her posture rigid, her face pale.

He dropped the bag.

He didn't think. He didn't plan.

He ran.

"Get away from her," he shouted.

The gang leader turned just in time to take the punch. The sound cracked through the air, sharp and sudden. Chaos followed—shouting, movement, panic. Someone struck Blessings from the side, and pain exploded behind his eyes. Warmth trickled down his temple.

Still, he stayed on his feet.

"Blessings, please!" Tapiwa cried, her voice breaking. "Don't get hurt because of me!"

But he didn't step back.

He moved with raw instinct, blocking, striking, standing between her and everything else. One by one, the confidence of the gang shattered. Some stumbled away. Others fled outright.

Silence returned as quickly as it had been broken.

Blessings sank onto the curb, breathing hard.

Tapiwa rushed to him, her hands shaking as she checked his head. "You're bleeding. We need an ambulance. Please."

"I'm fine," he said, though his voice was unsteady as he stood. "You shouldn't walk alone. I'll—"

She grabbed his arm.

"No," she said firmly. "You're not leaving like this."

He tried to pull away. She didn't let go.

"I won't," she continued, her eyes shining. "Not unless you go to the hospital first."

Blessings froze.

For the first time, he really saw her tears—not fear now, but worry. Real concern. For him.

Something shifted inside his chest. A single, unfamiliar beat.

His shoulders relaxed. His voice softened. "Okay," he said quietly.

She exhaled, relief washing over her face.

As they walked together toward the lights of the road, Blessings realized something terrifying and beautiful at once.

This city had finally given him something real to protect.
